Definisi
Sulit mendefinisikan salinitas air laut sebagai berat dari hasil
penguapan, pengeringan garam-garam. karena
3. Pengukuran Conductivity
Pengukran salinitas dengan ini telah disarankan oleh
Knudsen pada 84 tahun yang lalu (masa dia)
Pengembangan in situ conductivity salinometer telah
dapat mengukur dengan baik hubungan salinity-
depth
Electrical conductivity air laut kira-kira sebanding
dengan salinitas. Jika salinitas diukur dalam +
0,001%o maka conductivitasnya diukur pada 1
dalam 40.000.
Ketelitian conductivity salinometer memerlukan
kontrol temperatur yang dekat dan/atau beberapa
bentuk kompensasi variasi temperatur.
Pada dasarnya semua salinometer disusun oleh:
conductivity cell yang mempertemukan dengan
oscilator, amplifier dan null point detector.
Density and Oceans
• Density is a measure of how much mass is contained in a given unit
volume (density = mass/volume).
• Temperature, salinity and pressure work together to determine
water density (weight of water divided by the amount of space it
occupies).
• Cold, salty water is much denser than warm, fresher water and will
sink below the less dense layer.
• The ocean waters can be divided into three layers, depending on
their densities. Less dense waters form a top layer called the surface
mixed zone. The temperature and salinity of this layer can change
often because it is in direct contact with the air. For example, water
evaporation could cause an increase in salinity, and a cold front could
cause a drop in temperature.

a. Conductivity cell: ada 2 tipe
1. Yang mempunyai dua atau lebih elektrode, biasanya
dibuat dari platinum yang dibungkus platinum hitam
2. Tipe inductive.
b. Conductivity bridge
Sebelum digunakan cell diisi
dengan standard air laut
(S=35,00+0,01%o).
