Anjing (Canis familiaris) memiliki peran penting dalam kehidupan manusia yang didasarkan pada
pemanfaatan kemampuannya. Anjing juga berfungsi sebagai spesies model penelitian yang nyaman untuk
canids yang terancam punah dan dapat dianggap sebagai kandidat utama untuk model penyakit manusia karena
(i) anjing memiliki kesamaan dengan anatomi dan fisiologi manusia, (ii) anjing secara alami mengembangkan
banyak penyakit yang memiliki banyak karakteristik yang sama dengan manusia. pola penyakit (Zhang et al.
2009) dan (iii) genom anjing lebih dekat dengan genom manusia daripada genom tikus (Parker et al. 2004).
Kloning anjing dianggap hampir tidak mungkin karena karakteristik reproduksi mereka yang unik. Pertama,
pola siklus estrus pada anjing bersifat non-musiman dan monoestrus, dan interval antar estrusnya lebih lama
dibandingkan dengan hewan lain (anjing; 6–8 bulan, mencit; 5 hari dan babi; 13–21 hari) ( Allen, 1922; Fahmy,
Holtmann, & Baker, 1979; Wei et al., 2017). Kedua, oosit anjing diovulasi dalam keadaan belum matang (vesikel
germinal) dan mengalami maturasi hingga metafase II di saluran oviduk selama 48-72 jam (Lee et al., 2017).
Ketiga, sejumlah kecil pengumpulan oosit in vitro pada anjing biasanya dilakukan setelah ovarektomi dengan
menusuk folikel antral atau dengan pemotongan ovarium berulang.
Karena karakteristik reproduksi yang unik ini, penerapan teknologi reproduksi berbantuan (ART) telah
dibatasi pada anjing. Namun, akhirnya, dengan upaya tanpa henti (total 1.095 embrio anjing yang direkonstruksi
oleh SCNT ditransfer ke 123 penerima), Snuppy, anjing kloning pertama di dunia, berhasil diproduksi oleh SCNT
(Lee et al., 2005).
Baru-baru ini, anjing kloning pertama di dunia, Snuppy, berhasil direklon dari SCNT dengan menggunakan
sel punca mesenkimal (ASC) yang diturunkan dari adiposa (Kim et al., 2017). Tingkat kehamilan dan kelahiran
Snuppy hanya 2,4% (3 anjing dari 123 penerima) dan 0,2% (2 klon dari 1.095 embrio). Nilai numerik ini
meningkat tajam menjadi 42. 9% (3 anjing dari 7 penerima) dan 4,3% (4 klon dari 94 embrio), masing-masing,
ketika Snuppy reklon diproduksi, yang menunjukkan bahwa teknik ini sekarang menjadi lebih berlaku untuk
