Konsisten Lakukan “Gender Jihad”
Melalui Kajian Sastra
Dalam perjuangan kemerdekaan Indo-
nesia, peran perempuan begitu sentral.
Sayangnya, sejarah tidak mencatat itu den-
gan apik. Lihatlah deretan nama pahlawan
nasional. Dominasi laki-laki begitu kentara.
Padahal, tidak mungkin mereka bisa men-
capai cita-cita bangsa tanpa dukungan aktif
dan totalitas Kaum Hawa.
Apa yang disampaikan di atas sekadar
salah satu potret dari banyak gambaran lain
tentang belum tercapainya kesetaraan gen-
der di negeri ini. Mungkin, secara regulasi,
gagasan ini telah diakomodasi. Namun,
pada aplikasi di lapangan, perempuan
masih termarginalkan.
“Saya pikir, perjuangan untuk equa­lity
and justice masih harus konsisten di-
jalankan. Melalui kajian sastra, saya ingin
menjalankan gender jihad ini,” ungkap
Diah Ariani Arimbi S.S., MA., Ph.D., Dekan
Fakultas Ilmu Budaya yang merupakan
salah satu pakar kajian budaya dan sastra
UNAIR.
Perjuangan perempuan melalui sastra bu-
kanlah hal baru. Bahkan, langkah ini sudah
teruji waktu dan tergolong efektif. Lihatlah
RA Kartini yang menyuarakan aspirasinya
melalui kata-kata. Bertolak dari fakta itulah,
Diah yakin kalau “Gender Jihad” yang dise-
rukannya bakal membuahkan hasil. Meski
memang, butuh proses yang panjang.
Peraih gelar doktor dari University of
New South Wales ini mengatakan, negara
sekelas Amerika yang disebut-sebut mende-
wakan kesetaraan saja tampaknya belum
bisa menerima pemimpin perempuan.
Salah satu indikasinya, orang lebih banyak
memilih Donald Trump daripada Hillary
Clinton. Sedangkan bila ingin berkaca dari
luar negeri, agaknya negeri-negeri Skandi-
navia bisa menjadi contoh kongkret aplikasi
kesetaraan gender. Misalnya, di Swedia dan
Finlandia.
“Di sana, cuti hamil dan melahirkan
tidak hanya untuk perempuan. Tapi juga
buat suami. Karena, peran menjaga bayi
juga mesti dilakukan utuh oleh laki-laki,”
terangnya.
Meskipun belum sepenuhnya tercapai,
cita-cita kesetaraan gender di Indonesia

relatif menunjukkan tren positif. Betapa
tidak, di usianya yang masih 72 tahun,
negara ini sudah pernah memiliki presiden
perempuan. Pemilihan umum juga sudah
melibatkan perempuan secara aktif dengan
nilai suara yang sama dengan laki-laki (one
man one vote). Sementara di beberapa ne-
gara Eropa, untuk mencapai kesamaan ini,
butuh waktu yang jauh lebih panjang.
Tapi, “gender jihad” tetap mesti diko-
barkan. Betapa tidak, masih ada banyak
kekerasan rumah tangga yang korbannya
mayoritas perempuan dan anak. Mereka
termarginalkan dengan alasan-alasan kul-
tural patriarkis. Yang dalam perjalanannya,
justru lebih parah karena perempuan makin
jadi korban kapitalisme atau jadi komoditas.
Dalam hal ini, sejumlah perspektif mesti
dibenahi. Tidak hanya sudut pandang yang
berasal dari laki-laki dan lingkungan. Pe­
rempuan sendiri mesti bisa melihat dirinya
dengan adil dan tidak termakan mitos
kultural.
Ada fakta menarik yang ditemukan Diah
saat melakukan penelitian tentang Gerakan
Tarbiyah (khusus perempuan) di kampus
pada 2008, 2011, 2015, dan 2016. Berdasar-
kan riset yang dijalankannya di beberapa
kampus Jawa Timur termasuk UNAIR, ITS,
Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universitas
Brawijaya, dan Universitas Jember itu, dike-
tahui kalau para perempuan di gerakan itu
fokus pada pemberdayaan komprehensif.
Khususnya, di bidang sosial dan pendidi-
kan.
Hal ini menunjukkan, kalau Gerakan
Tarbiyah itu pantas untuk dilestarikan dan
digiatkan. Karena, sasaran pemberdayaan
di sana komplit. Semua anggota didorong
untuk pandai, peka terhadap situasi sosial,
paham nilai moral, agama, dan budaya, juga
independen di aspek ekonomi. “Kemandi-
rian finansial diajarkan dalam gerakan itu.
Ini merupakan bentuk kesetaraan yang
memang mesti dicapai. Perempuan tidak
hanya diajarkan tentang kesalehan. Tapi
juga, soal bagaimana tidak tergantung pada
orang lain,” ungkap dia. (*)

Setelah lulus program sarjana di Univer-
sitas Airlangga pada tahun 1997, dua tahun
kemudian, Diah melanjutkan studi magister
di University of Northern Iowa, Amerika
Serikat, dan meneruskan program doktor di
University of New South Wales pada tahun
2006.
Berbagai publikasi di tingkat internasio­
nal pernah ditorehkannya. Tercatat puluhan
artikel yang ditulisnya di level global (lihat
tabel, untuk membaca sebagiannya). Dia
juga sering mengikuti konferensi inter­
terbitan luar negeri.
Publikasi yang sudah ditulisnya antara

Perempuan yang sangat mengidolakan
Kartini itu juga aktif di beberapa asosiasi.
Antara lain Himpunan Sarjana Kesusas-
traan Indonesia (HISKI), Asian Associa-
tion of Women’Studied (AAWS), Women
Scholars Network (WSN) – International
Association of The History of Religion
(IAHR). Di tengah kesibukannya sebagai
dosen, Diah juga telah menerbitkan banyak
buku.
Selama karirnya, Diah mendapatkan se-
jumlah penghargaan. Antara lain, Recipient
of Australian Development Scholarship for
Doctoral Degree Study 2002, dan Recipient
of Fulbright Scholarship of Master Degree

Consistent in the “Gender Struggle” through Literary

Studies
In the struggle for Independence, the role
of women was crucial. Unfortunately, it was
not well documented in history. The list of
national heroes of Indonesia is dominated by
men when the women actually gave their ac-
tive and total support for the struggle success.
It was only one of many examples of
gender inequality in this nation. In terms
of regulations, the idea of gender equality is
accommodated. However, in the implementa-
tion in the field, women are still marginal-
ized.
“In my opinion, the struggle over equality
and justice must be carried on consistently.
Through Literary Studies, I want to take
up this gender struggle,” said Diah Ariani
Arimbi S.S., MA., Ph.D., the Dean of Faculty
of Humanities and one of UNAIR’s expert in
Humanity and Literary Studies.
The women’s struggle through literature is
not a new thing. It has been put to the test
and shown to be effective. It was obviously
proven by RA Kartini who conveyed her ide-

Nevertheless, the gender struggle must be
carried on as there are still many cases of
domestic violence and the victims are women
and child. They are marginalized over patri-
archal cultural reasons. As time goes by, the
women even become the victims of capitalism
or become commodities.
In this regard, some perspective improve-
ment is required. This improvement is not
only from the men and the environment’s
perspective, but also from the women’s them-
selves. They must be able to see themselves
objectively and remain unaffected by cultural
myths.
Diah found an interesting fact when she
was conducting a research on Tarbiyah
Movement (exclusive for women) in some
campuses in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016.
Based on her research conducted in UNAIR,
ITS, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universi-
tas Brawijaya, and Universitas Jember, she
found that the activists of the movement

International Achievement
After her bachelor graduation in Universi-
tas Airlangga in 1997, she continued to take
her master degree two years later in Uni-
versity of Northern Iowa, The USA, and her
doctoral degree in University of New South
Wales in 2006.
She has made some international publica-
tions. Dozens of her articles were featured at
global level (see table for more details). She
has attended many international conferences
and become a reviewer of a journal published
overseas.

Masyarakat Harus Berperan Aktif Memerangi Hoax
Pada kisaran tahun 1997, Kajian Media
atau Media Studies belum begitu populer
di Indonesia. Dibandingkan dengan studi
Public Relation, bidang yang masuk dalam
ranah ilmu komunikasi ini masih kurang
diminati. Namun, hal tersebut tak me-
nyurutkan semangat Rachmah Ida muda
untuk menempuh studi doktoral di bidang
tersebut. Tak tanggung-tanggung, dosen
Departemen Komunikasi, Fakultas Ilmu
Sosial dan Ilmu Politik (FISIP) ini meng-
enyam pendidikan itu di Curtin University
of Technology, Australia.
Tentu saja, ada banyak rintangan yang
dihadapi oleh perempuan yang menuntas-
kan gelar master di Edith Cowan University,
Australia. Dia mengaku, sempat dijadikan
bahan ejekan oleh seorang senior yang me-
nilai kalau bidang studi yang ia pilih tidak
akan laku di Indonesia.
Namun kini, keadaan sudah berubah.
Industri media tanah air terus berkembang.
Otomatis, konsentrasi kajian ilmu komuni-
kasi memberi ruang seluas-luasnya untuk
Kajian Media. Prediksi seniornya meleset.
Bahkan per Desember 2014, Rachmah Ida

mencapai gelar guru besar Kajian Media.
Yang menarik, dia merupakan profesor
pertama di bidang tersebut.
Dijelaskan perempuan kelahiran Sura-
baya 24 Mei 1969 tersebut, Kajian Media
tergolong penting di era kekinian. Betapa
tidak, media merupakan sarana masyarakat
mengetahui apa yang tidak terjangkau
panca indera. Media membantu masyarakat
untuk mengetahui informasi yang sebel-
umnya tidak diketahui. Sekaligus, menjadi
sarana hiburan.
“Hiburan di media massa itu pent-
ing. Supaya manusia bisa terhindar dari
kepanikan-kepanikan dalam kehidupan,”
ungkap perempuan yang memiliki nama
dengan titel lengkap Prof. Dra. Rachmah
Ida, M.Com., Ph.D tersebut.
Selain itu, media juga menjadi peng-
hubung manusia dengan lingkungan sekitar
dalam lingkup yang lebih luas. Bahkan,
di ranah global. Maka itu, melihat betapa
mendasarnya peran media dalam kehidu-
pan sehari-hari, ilmu tentang Kajian Media
pasti dibutuhkan publik.
Terlebih, perkembangan teknologi
membuat media massa semakin tumbuh
pesat. Prohgram-program beragam dan
semuanya menyentuh banyak aspek. Yang
jelas, masyarakat telah makin rekat dengan

Atensi Pada Hoax
Pada Kamis 16 Maret 2017 lalu, dalam
sebuah forum diskusi yang digelar di
Gedung Manajemen Kampus C UNAIR,
Prof. Dra. Rachmah Ida, M.Com., Ph.D.,
menyampaikan perspektifnya mengenai
fenomena berita hoax yang membanjir di
tengah masyarakat. Dalam acara bertajuk
Peran Aktif Masyarakat Menghadapi Hoax
di Media Sosial, Prof. Ida menegaskan, in-
formasi hoax bisa membawa dampak besar
jika menyangkut pada sistem yang lebih
besar, misalnya negara. Jika hanya pada ta-
taran yang kecil, hoax tidak begitu menjadi
sebuah permasalahan.
“Sebagian dari masyarakat sering dapat
pesan singkat bahwa dia menang undian.
Ini hoax, tapi tidak menjadi masalah dan
cenderung kita abaikan. Lain halnya bila
hoax menyangkut kepentingan ne-

gara, politik, atau pejabat sebuah institusi
pem,erintah, pasti bakal jadi persoalan
serius,” tegas Ibu dari Zahra Tiara Aisya
tersebut.
Untuk mengurangi dampak hoax yang
terus menyebar luas di masyarakat, Prof.
Ida menjelaskan perlunya memberikan
pemahaman kepada masyarakat. Pemb-
elajaran yang dimaksud bisa dalam bentuk
penjelasan soal penggunaan media sosial
dan fungsi dari adanya media sosial. Sebab,
berita hoax terbukti lekas tersebar melalui
media sosial.
“Masyarakat menggunakan media sosial
bukan karena mereka tahu terlebih dahulu,
tapi mereka menerima dulu dan tahu
begitu saja. Mereka tidak tahu apa itu WA,
BBM. Mereka gunakan itu karena euforia
yang terjadi di masyarakat,” paparnya.
“Nah, kewajiban kita (para akademisi dan
mahasiswa) itu menyadarkan, mendidik,
dan menjelaskan fungsi media sosial, agar
mereka melek media,” imbuhnya.
Di sisi lain, Prof Ida mengapresiasi
maraknya gerakan anti-hoax yang dibuat
oleh masyarakat. Juga, beragam kebijakan
publik yang dijalankan pemerintah pusat.
Ini menunjukkan upaya yang baik di tiap
level.
“Kita memang tidak bisa menghapus
hoax. Tapi, kita bisa menguranginya. Mis-
alnya, dengan menyentuh sisi spiritual para
pengguna media sosial dan ajakan untuk
menjadi bijak dalam menyebarkan berita.
Termasuk, peran pemerintah untuk mem-
buat kebijakan politik yang mesti digelora-

Gender Field of Expertise
Selain dikenal sebagai pakar media, Media Studies
Rachmah Ida juga memiliki komitmen
dalam perjuangan kesetaraan gender. Yakni, Educational Degree:
konsep pengakuan yang sama atas hak asasi
yang dimiliki perempuan dan laki-laki. Hak Bachelor Airlangga University

Public Must Contribute Actively to Fight against Hoax

In 1997, Media studies were not popular
in Indonesia. Compared to Public Relations
studies, Media Studies included in Com-
munication Studies was not very popular
among students. But it did not discourage
the young Rachmah Ida to take her doctoral
degree in Media. The lecturer of Depart-
ment of Communication Studies, Faculty of
Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) took her
doctorate in Curtin University of Technology
in Australia.
There were obstacles faced by the woman
who completed her master degree in Edith
Cowan University, Australia. She shared her
story that she was ridiculed by her seniors
who thought that Media Studies would never
be popular in Indonesia.
But now, media industry has shown rapid

Attention to Hoax obligation (as academicians and students)

On March 16, 2017, a discussion forum
was held in Management Office Building
Campus C UNAIR. Prof. Dra. Rachmah Ida,
M.Com., Ph.D., presented her view on abun-
dant fake news or hoaxes. In the event titled
Community Active Involvement to Fight
Against Hoaxes in Social Media, Prof. Ida
emphasized that false information can create
tremendous impact if it is related to greater
system, such as a country. At the small scale,
hoax is not an issue.
“Some people often get short messages say-
ing they have won contests. They are hoaxes,
but they aren’t significant and we can ignore
them. But when the hoax is related to the in-
terest of the state, to the politics or officials or
certain institutions, it will be a serious issue,”
said the mother of Zahra Tiara Aisya.
To reduce the far-reaching impact of hoax
in the public, Prof. Ida believed that the pub-
lic should be given education. This education
can be on how to use social media and the
function of social media itself as hoaxes often
spread massively through social media.
“The public use social media not because
they know it first but they get it and take it
for granted. They do not know what is meant
by WA, BBM. They use it due to the euphoria
in the community,” she stated. “It is our
to make them aware, educate and explain
to them the function of social media so they
become media-literate,” she added.
On the other hand, Prof. Ida appreciated
the anti-hoax movement in the public as well
as a public policy generated by the central
government. It means that efforts are made
in each level of administration.
“We can never eradicate hoaxes. But we
can reduce them such as by touching the so-
cial media users’ spirituality, inviting them to
be wiser in sharing news, including inciting
the government role to make favorable policy
against hoaxes,” she explained. (*)
Gender Equality Struggle
Beside his role as a media expert, Prof. Ida
is also committed in gender equality struggle,
a concept where human rights are possessed
by women and men. These rights include
right to live, right to education, proper jobs,
right to choose and be chosen in politics and
other human rights.
“This struggle for women rights should be
carried on as all this time, women are often
marginalized by the political and socio-
cultural construction in the community,” she
said.
Rachmah Ida regretted that many women
get different wage or income from the men
in public professional field and other things
which the women’s rights were not consid-
ered. “So gender equality is to give propor-
tional rights fairly to women and men,” she
said.
Furthermore, she also complained about
public jokes which sometimes reduce the val-
ue of gender equality. There is an unfair and
ridiculous analogy saying that men can go up
the house to repair it, so the women can do it
as well. There is a sense of “coercion“ on the
meaning of equality in the context.
She hoped, in the future, Indonesian
women will have similar opportunity to get
education in all degrees of education. They
must get same access to education, health-
care, entertainment and social welfare. So the
women will not only smarter but also more
creative and active so their voice is heard.
Women should be able to articulate their
importance and should not be represented by
parties which work on behalf of women but
they actually do not fight for them.
“I want Indonesian women to have dignity
and self determinism to show their identities,
either as mothers, wives or anything they
want to be freely without being attached to
other social and cultural subjects,” she hoped.

Utama yang Memengaruhi Investasi
Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) memi-
liki banyak pakar dari segala bidang. Salah
satunya, ahli hukum kepailitan dan tenaga
kerja Dr. M. Hadi Subhan, S.H., M.H., C.N.
Pria kelahiran Tegal ini dikenal berdedi-
kasi dan peduli pada perjuangan hak-hak
buruh. Tak ayal, banyak penelitian maupun
pemikiran yang dicetuskannya, berkutat
tentang iklim perburuhan maupun ketena-
gakerjaan secara umum.
Selama ini, para buruh kerap
melakukan aksi demontrasi. Pada
momen tertentu, seperti saat

Dia menuturkan, banyak riset menye-
butkan, Iklim Perburuhan di Indonesia
bukanlah faktor utama yang memengaruhi
investasi. Bahkan, kondisi perburuhan
menempati urutan ketujuh.
“Faktor pertama yang memen-
garuhi investasi di Indonesia adalah
ketersediaan infrastruktur,” ungkap dosen
yang menyelesaikan kuliah di level sarjana
hingga doktor di UNAIR ini. Sementara
faktor kedua adalah kepastian hukum, disu-
sul faktor ketiga yakni kepastian nilai pajak.
Kesimpulannya, kalau ada persoa-
lan investasi yang mengkuatirkan, tiga fak-
tor teratas itulah yang mestinya dievaluasi.
Apalagi, selama ini, aksi buruh yang terjadi
bukan tanpa alasan. Bahkan, yang menjadi
pangkal mereka turun ke jalan tergolong
masuk akal. “Kan sangat wajar kalau ada
buruh menuntut upah yang layak. Apa
yang mereka lakukan dilindungi undang-
undang,” papar dia.
Berdasarkan fakta di atas, sudah
selayaknya pemerintah memberi perha-
tian pada problem infrastruktur, kepastian
hukum, dan nilai pajak. Jalan atau akses
distribusi yang baik adalah kebutuhan mut-
lak. Kepastian dan penegakkan hukum juga
masuk elemen penting.
Seperti diketahui, regulasi di Indonesia
umumnya sudah baik. Namun, pengawasan
dan penegakkannya sering kali
tidak memuaskan. Lihatlah
fenomena tenaga kerja
asing yang masuk ke
Indonesia secara
ilegal. Khususnya,
mereka yang mas-
uk tidak dengan
keahlian khusus,
alias sekadar
jadi tenaga kerja
kasar.
Nilai pajak juga
harus jelas, karena
para pebisnis harus
sudah dapat meng-
hitung kebutuhan itu
sedari awal. “Intinya, Iklim
Perburuhan ini masih di track

Penguji di Belanda
Hadi merupakan salah satu doktor
hukum kepailitan dan hukum tenaga kerja
di Indonesia yang kerap dijadikan rujukan
sebagai saksi ahli. Nyaris semua institusi
penegak hukum, di banyak daerah, sudah
pernah memanggilnya untuk menjelaskan
duduk perkara kasus.
Dia juga aktif menulis artikel jurnal,
esai di media massa, maupun buku. Salah
satu bukunya berjudul Hukum Kepailitan:
Prinsip, Norma, dan Praktik di Peradilan
yang terbit pada tahun 2009. Buku terse-

level nasional dan pedoman hakim dalam

tinggi terbaik di dunia: Universitas Leiden,
Belanda. “Waktu itu disertasinya membahas
mengenai ketenagakerjaan,” terang dia.
Hadi bersama tujuh penguji lintas negara,
menguji disertasi dengan judul “Labour
Law and Development in Indonesia” pada
Kamis 4 Februari 2016. Ia merupakan
satu-satunya penguji dari Indonesia yang
ditunjuk oleh Leiden.
Disertasi mahasiswa S-3 yang diujikan
adalah milik Surya Tjandra, salah satu
dosen dari Universitas Katolik Atma Jaya,
Jakarta. Disertasi tentang perburuhan di
Indonesia tersebut mengkaji peran serikat
pekerja dalam memperjuangkan kebijakan-
kebijakan yang memberikan afirmasi
kepada buruh. Dari penelitian tersebut,
ditemukan bahwa terdapat korelasi positif
tentang perjuangan buruh terhadap kebija-
kan pemerintah.
Hadi ditunjuk sebagai salah satu penguji
karena berbagai pengalaman, rekam jejak,
kiprah, sekaligus karya yang telah ia di-

hasilkan di Indonesia, khususnya di bidang
perburuhan. Kualifikasi lain yang menjadi
penilaian Universitas Leiden sehingga Hadi
dipilih menjadi penguji disertasi dari Indo-
nesia diantaranya adalah karena kiprahnya
di dunia akademik, kebiasaan menjadi pem-
bicara pada forum-forum yang berkaitan
dengan hukum perburuhan, keaktifan
menulis di media massa, serta advokasi
yang telah dilakukan terhadap buruh.
Pada mulanya, promotor calon doktor
mengirim surat kepada Hadi untuk ber-
gabung menjadi komite pengujian doktor.
Komite penguji tersebut bertugas untuk
membaca dan mengevaluasi, serta menilai
naskah disertasi. Dari catatan dan review
yang telah dilakukan, semua masukan dari
komisi dipertahankan untuk ujian terbuka,
yang disebut dengan Ph.D Defence.
Ujian terbuka disertasi tersebut dihadiri
oleh kurang lebih seratus sivitas akademika
Universitas Leiden, baik mahasiswa jenjang
S-3 maupun dosen dan profesor. Hadi
mendapatkan penghargaan sebagai penanya
pertama untuk calon doktor, sekaligus satu-
satunya penguji yang mendapatkan kesem-
patan untuk mengajukan dua pertanyaan.
Penghargaan sebagai penanya pertama
tersebut dilihat berdasarkan substansi
dan relevansi pertanyaan terhadap materi
disertasi.
“Ini menunjukkan bahwa UNAIR men-
dapat tempat khusus di universitas besar
Eropa. Leiden adalah universitas nomor
satu di Belanda,” tuturnya.
Banyak pelajaran dan pengalaman yang
dipetik Hadi setelah menjadi penguji
disertasi di Leiden. Salah satunya adalah
tentang kajian hukum di Belanda yang me-
merhatikan kemanfaatan pada masyarakat.
“Penelitian hukum di Leiden tidak hanya
berbasis pada norma, namun juga berbasis
pada masyarakat. Itu hal yang bagus untuk
diadopsi,” urainya.
Bagi Hadi, kepakaran yang ia miliki harus
digunakan untuk menolong semua lapisan.
Kepakaran di bidang hukum kepailitan
membuatnya aktif berkontribusi menye-
lesaikan masalah di perusahaan besar.
Sedangkan wawasannya di bidang hukum
tenaga kerja, mengantarkan Hadi untuk
fokus mengawal perjuangan buruh. “Apa
yang saya lakukan adalah upaya mengamal-
kan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi,” papar

Labor Climate Not Main Factor
Affecting Investment
Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has a lot
of experts in different field of studies. One
of them is Dr. M. Hadi Subhan, S.H., M.H.,
C.N., an expert in labor and bankruptcy law.
The man, who was born in Tegal, Central
Java, has shown a great dedication and con-
cern for the labor rights. Therefore, most of
his researches and ideas were about the labor
climate or employment in general.
It is quite under-
standable if the labors often
go on strike, either on
Labor Day on the first
of May or when the
administration is
reviewing the city/
provincial minimum
wage. Hence, there is
often a rumor saying
this unfavorable In-
donesian labor climate
can affect domestic
investment.
According to
the Head of Student Affairs of
UNAIR, this is a baseless speculation. He
said that, as many researchers have shown,
the labor climate in Indonesia is not the main
factor affecting the investment. Labor condi-
tion is only at the seventh among the factors.
“The first factor affecting Indo-
nesian investment is the infrastructure
availability,” said the lecturer who took his
academic degrees in UNAIR. The second fac-
tor is the legal certainty and the third is tax
certainty.
In conclusion, if there is a critical
investment issue, those three factors should
be evaluated. Moreover, the labor strikes hap-
pen for a reason and it is a good reason. “It is
only natural if the labors demand fair wages.
What they do is protected by the law,” said
Hadi Subhan.

is relevant for the state to
pay more attention on

“The point is, this labor climate is still on the

An Examiner in Holland
Hadi is one of the bankruptcy and labor
law experts in Indonesia who is often referred
and summoned to be a witness. Almost all
legal enforcement institutions have asked him
counsel for their cases.
He also writes journal articles, essays in
mass media and books. His book titled Bank-
ruptcy Law: Principles, Norms and Practices
in Courts was published in 2009. The book
has been used as a textbook in college classes
and a reference in courts.
Another interesting achievement he
made was when he was invited as an exam-
iner in a doctoral dissertation defense exam
in one of the best universities in the world,
Leiden University, Holland. “The disserta-
tion exam was about labor at that time,” he
explained.
Hadi was among seven cross-national
examiners, questioning a dissertation titled
“Labour Law and Development in Indonesia”
on Thursday, February 4, 2016. He was the
only examiner from Indonesia appointed by
Leiden University.

Catholic University, Jakarta. His dissertation
on Indonesian labor reviewed the roles of
labor unions which demand affirmative poli-
cies. From the research, he found a positive
correlation between the labor struggle and

Ilmu akuntansi terus berkembang. Posis-
inya dalam masyarakat pun terus bergeser
dan meluas. Para akuntan dituntut untuk

bukan hanya bookkeeper atau penjaga
buku keuangan di sebuah perusahaan atau
organisasi. Lebih dari itu, mereka bisa men-
jadi ujung tombak pengelolaan keuangan.
Tepatnya, sebagai konsultan yang menjadi
jembatan antara pelaksana perusahaan/or-
ganisasi dan pemilik uang.
Dalam perkembangannya, akuntan tidak
hanya dikenal sebagai auditor dan penyedia
informasi. Sekarang, profesi akuntan sudah
masuk ke lintas sektoral hingga bisa berada
di puncak pemimpin tertinggi, pengambil
keputusan. Itu adalah dampak dari betapa
fundamentalnya keahlian itu.
“Para akuntan harus memiliki mindset
revolusioner untuk turut bisa mengawal
pemerintahan yang bersih, berintegritas,
dan akuntabel. Mereka mesti memiliki
hasrat untuk mewujudkan Good Corpo-
rate Governance,” papar Prof. Dr. I Made
Narsa, S.E., M.Si., CA. saat ditemui di ruang

(24/3) lalu.
Secara alamiah, ilmu akuntansi akan
berevolusi. Tatkala tuntutan perlunya har-
monisasi akuntansi, ilmu ini bergeser dari
rule-based ke principle-based. Ketika proses
bisnis semakin rumit, dalam akuntansi telah
muncul konsep activity based costing.

memunculkan pandangan-pandangan baru
dalam memecahkan persoalan bangsa.
Mereka harus lihai mengomunikasikan
gagasan, menegosiasikan kemenangan,
mengelola human capital, lincah dalam
membangun jaringan, dan mampu ber-
hadapan dengan berbagai masalah sosial
budaya.
Terlebih, penelitian yang berbasis di
bidang ini pun makin memiliki ragam
fokus maupun tema. Antara lain, dalam
lingkup topic Green Accounting, Forensic
Accounting, dan Behavioral Accounting.
Green Acoounting umumnya membahas
tentang cost lingkungan dari suatu usaha/
perusahaan.

Behavioral Science
According to Prof. Narsa, the development
of Economic and Business Science is shifting
from functional to behavioral. For example,
Economics develops into Behavioral Econom-
ics, Finance develops into Behavioral Finance
and Accounting also develops into Behavioral
Accounting.
“In the future, the developing domain is
environmental and sociological of certain
discipline,” said the man born in Jembrana,
Bali in 1965.
Narsa said that the shift towards sociology
happens because of massive technological
development. At micro level, sophisticated
production technology has beendeveloped
and changed the company’s production
process. This change demands management
accounting to change as well. In short, ac-
counting domain covers all parties affected by
the accounting system output and all parties
which affected accounting system.
“Accounting is not only about activity and
financial reports and accounting, but also
about the impact of stakeholders’ behavior ,”

scope in the society also shifts and expands.
The accountants are expected to keep up with
the modern era. An accountant is not only a
bookkeeper of a company or an organization,
but more than that, an accountant can also

only as auditors or information providers.
Accountants now can be in any sectors of de-
velopment and they can even be at the top of

Made Narsa, S.E., M.Si., CA. in his office, in

Naturally, the study of Accounting will
evolve. When harmonization of accounting
in the world was expected, accounting shifted
from rule-based to principle-based. When
business process was getting more
complicated, the concept of

appeared.

face various socio-cultural problems.
The research of this studies has more
varieties or themes, such as Green Account-
ing, Forensic Accounting, and Behavioral
Accounting. Green Accounting focuses on en-

The external cost as an impact of the busi-
ness or company operation should be calcu-
lated in details. It is very useful, for example
as a parameter in determining the scale of
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This
CSR is given to the environment and, in
principle, to give something in return to the
surrounding environment for the impacts
caused by the business or the company.
Forensic Accounting focuses on the
financial flows and aspects related to them.
Generally it is used to identify miscalculation
or mismanagement. At some point, thorough
research in this topic will improve the science
which related to crimes.
Behavioral Accounting studies account-
ing system which affects the behavior of the
people. Furthermore, this topic can also be
focused on the influence of an individual to
an organization or a structure which uses the
system.

topics related closely daily life. As an effect of
the development of technology, information
and the change of community need,”

Morality. An accountant should not only
be smart and intelligent but also has good

oritized so the application of Accounting can

yang berlebih. Pertumbuhan kolagen itu
dipengaruhi enzim kolagenase yang kurang
terkontrol. Enzim kolagenase adalah enzim
yang mengatalisis hidrolisis kolagen.

Future Doctors Must Master the Technology Early On
Prof. Dr. David Sontani Perdanakusumah,

Applicative Invention
The doctor born in Singkawang has
conducted excellent researches and made
useful invention for the community. One of
his inventions is keloid removal cream. It is
effective to remove fibrous, thick and contract
in color scar wound.
To deal with keloid, generally people go
through various methods such as operation,
cortisone injection, cryotherapy, and many
other methods. But, they can’t remove keloid,
the operation can even makes it bigger.
Keloid often becomes the patient or doctor’s
nightmare.
Keloid grows from excessive collagen
activity. The collagen growth is influenced
by uncontrolled collagenase enzyme. It is the
enzyme which catalyzes collagen hydrolysis.
Melanin, the skin pigment, is acidic. To
make collagenase works, the enzyme should
be alkaline. To people with pale complexion,
excessive melanin makes their skin acidic.
David has formulated a way to reduce
the melanin by using a whitener containing
alkaline solvent. To prevent the skin becomes
oversensitive because of the alkalinity and
acidity, he combines the whitener with lipo-
some so its alkalinity reacts when it reaches
dermis layer. The whitener he uses is Hydro-
quinone with 4 percent concentration.
They will come out on top in the competi-
tion,” he explained.
He believed that Indonesian human re-
sources have the same potential with other
countries. It can be seen from
many achievements made by
Indonesian internationally.

His idea patented was on alkaline whiten-
ing for keloid. It was in his work titled,
Hydroquinone use to Prevent and Remove
Keloid. The alkaline keloid whitener was
finally patented on October 17, 2012 with
patent number ID P0031959.
“I submitted the patent in around 2004,
but it was finished in 2012. Eight years need-
ed because hydroquinone is not something
new. It has been often used as whitener, but
hydroquinone for keloid had never existed. It
is my research, originally,” he added.
He has tried it to patients who have gone
through operation which caused keloid. The
result shows less keloid and better color. For
big keloid, the cream should be combined
with surgery.
Beside for patients with keloid, he has been
using his whitening cream for patients with
smallpox remains and burns. “Burnt hand
becomes soft with it. There is trauma, scar
from operation, I administered the cream
and it turns out well and soft,” said the recipi-
ent of Science Achievement Award 2015 from
Republika.
At the moment, through Institute of Tropi-
cal Disease UNAIR, David’s cream is going
to be mass produced by a pharmaceutical
company. It is being tested for stability and
after that there will be clinical tests in various

Hakim, MD, MHA, Ph.D (Urol).
Dosen dan peneliti di bidang stem cell
ini telah banyak berkiprah di level global.
Selain pernah mengenyam pendidikan
maupun pelatihan di luar negeri, tak sedikit
karya ilmiahnya yang menghiasi jurnal
internasional. Tak hanya itu, pria yang aktif
di sejumlah asosiasi tingtkat Asia Pasific ini
juga tercatat sebagai reviewer di sejumlah
jurnal. Baik terbitan Indonesia, maupun
negara lain. Antara lain, di British Journal
of Urology International (BJUI), Urologia
Internasionalis Journal (Swiss), SQU Med
Oman Journal (Oman), BMC Journal (Ing-
gris), dan seterusnya.
Disinggung soal peranan stem cell bagi
perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan di dunia
kedokteran dan kesehatan, Lukman men-
yatakan, metode dan teknologi ini tidak
hanya buat pengobatan. Lebih dari itu,
stem cell bisa dipakai untuk pencegahan.
Misalnya, untuk mencegah terjadinya efek
negatif yang menjalar dan lebih besar dalam
fase pengobatan atau perawatan pasien.
Indonesia, dan UNAIR, memiliki sumber
daya untuk terus mengembangkan stem
cell. Fasilitas yang ada sudah mencukupi.
Kalau pun ada yang belum komplit, akses

buatnya unggul. “Proses penyembuhan
terjadi karena sel-sel normal membelah diri
yang dikenal dengan istilah healing process.
Proses penyembuhan ini dapat dipercepat

Selain menjadi dosen, Lukman juga
dipercaya pihak kampus untuk menjadi
Koordinator Bidang Publikasi dan Ker-
jasama Airlangga Health Science Institute
(AHSI). AHSI merupakan unit di bawah
Rektor yang tujuannya mengintegrasikan
beberapa unit di bawah universitas supaya
memiliki arah dan tujuan yang lebih konk-
ret dan integrated. AHSI menaungi empat
unit yang terdiri dari Rumah Sakit UNAIR
(RS UNAIR), Rumah Sakit Penyakit Tropik
Infeksi (RSPTI), Rumah Sakit Gigi dan
Mulut (RSGM), dan Institute of Tropical
Disease (ITD).
Sejak bergelut di dunia kedokteran
dan kesehatan, Lukman selalu memegang
falsafah from bench to bed side. Ungkapan
itu merujuk pada relasi antara penelitian
dan kebermanfaatan di masyarakat. Bench

publikasi riset hingga bioproduk. Semen-
tara, bed side adalah istilah yang mengacu

penelitian yang telah dihasilkan melalui
meja riset, harus bermanfaat kongkret demi
kehidupan umat manusia: Meneliti untuk
Kemanusiaan.
“Saya mengasumsikan istilah from
bench to bed side sebagai suatu garis con-
tinuum. Ada berbagai tahapan penelitian
tentang kesehatan yang dilalui oleh seorang
peneliti sampai akhirnya dia menghasil-
kan sesuatu yang bisa dimanfaatkan untuk
kepentingan pelayanan medis,” kata dia.
Pria yang saat ini menetap di
bilangan Gayungsari Barat Surabaya ini
mencontohkan, bila topik yang diteliti
itu berkaitan dengan ilmu atau teori yang
mendasar, peneliti akan mengerjakannya di
laboratorium. Setelah hasil penelitian diper-
oleh, riset tersebut dipublikasikan. Setelah
sederet penelitian dipublikasikan, tahap
berikutnya di tingkat laboratorium adalah
menggunakan hewan sebagai objek coba.
Selanjutnya adalah uji klinis (clinical trial).
Intinya, semua penelitian pada akhirnya
bermuara ke manusia (clinic).
Institusi pendidikan tinggi me-
miliki landasan yang dijadikan pegangan
dalam pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan.
Yakni, Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi:
pendidikan, penelitian, dan pengabdian
masyarakat. Dalam upaya mengembangkan
ilmu pengetahuan, khususnya di bidang
medis, Universitas Airlangga membentuk
AHSI. Diharapkan, akselerasi penerapan

Memanfaatkan Bahan Pangan Liar

Pada bulan Juni tahun 2016 lalu, The
Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) merilis
Indeks Ketahanan Pangan Global (Global
Food Security Index atau GFSI). Dalam
indeks tersebut diperlihatkan posisi negara-
negara di dunia berdasarkan kebijakan
pangan yang diterapkan di 113 negara di
dunia. Indonesia menduduki peringkat ke-
71, setelah sebelumnya menempati posisi
ke-76 pada tahun 2014 dan 2015.
Ada tiga aspek utama yang digunakan
dalam penilaian GFSI yaitu keterjangkauan,
ketersediaan, serta kualitas dan keamanan.
Pada poin keterjangkauan, Indonesia
mendapat naik dari 46,8 ke 50,3. Pada
poin ketersediaan meningkat dari 51,2 ke
54,1. Sementara pada aspek kualitas dan
keamanan naik dari 41,9 ke 42. Nilai indeks
yang meningkat itu membuat kebijakan
pangan Indonesia masuk dalam “biggest
changes” menurut EIU.
Meski berbagai kebijakan pangan telah
diterapkan pemerintah, tak berarti Indone-
sia lepas dari prediksi rawan pangan. Tahun
2015 lalu, sebanyak 15 persen dari 398
kabupaten di Indonesia dinilai rentan akan
kerawanan pangan menurut World Food
Programme.

Masyarakat Universitas Airlangga Dr. Ir.
Annis Catur Adi, M.Si., berpendapat bahwa
masalah ketahanan pangan bisa diatasi.
Salah satunya, adalah dengan memanfaat-
kan bahan pangan berupa tanaman liar dan
hewan.
“Menurut FAO (Food Agricultural Or-
ganization), pangan liar merupakan sumber
vitamin, mineral dan zat gizi lain yang pent-
ing, yang dapat melengkapi makanan pokok
kelompok rawan gizi, seperti anak-anak dan
orang tua,” tutur Annis.
Bukan tanpa alasan pernyataan Organisa-
si Pangan Dunia diamini oleh Annis. Sebab,
bahan pangan liar bisa dengan mudah dite-
mukan di lingkungan sekitar. Pernyataan
Annis itu didasarkan pada hasil riset yang ia
lakukan bersama timnya pada tahun 2014.
Annis mengambil data tersebut di wilayah
Bangkalan, Sampang, dan Pamekasan.
Di Kecamatan Blega, Bangkalan, Annis
setidaknya menemukan 37 jenis bahan pan-
gan dari tanaman liar. Rinciannya adalah 16

spesies pada kelompok sayur-sayuran, 14
pada kelompok buah-buahan, dan 7 pada
kelompok umbi-umbian.
Pada kelompok sayur-sayuran, di anta-
ranya ada sayuran kecipir, blunthas, daun
katuk, bayam alas, bletah, blincong, dan
sembukan. Pada kelompok buah-buahan,
di antaranya ada rambusa, mundu, kelapa,
sirsak, bengkuang, dan sanek. Sedangkan,
pada kelompok umbi-umbian, di antara-
nya ada gadung, sobeg, talas, obih, jarud,
kaburan, dan larbe.
Keuntungannya, masyarakat tak perlu
khawatir dengan ketersediaan bahan
pangan dari tanaman liar ini. Memang, tak
semua jenis tanaman liar selalu tersedia
sepanjang tahun. Ada beberapa spesies
tanaman yang selalu tumbuh sepanjang ta-
hun, ada yang hanya tergantung musim ke-
marau dan hujan. Namun, masa tumbuhnya
tanaman liar tersebut saling melengkapi.
Sehingga, masyarakat bisa terus mencukupi
kebutuhan dapurnya selama waktu.
Contohnya, pada kelompok sayur-
sayuran. Tanaman bayam alas, kondur,
sembukan, dan rakarah, tidak tumbuh pada
musim kemarau. Tetapi, ada tumbuhan ke-
cipir, klandingan, blunthas, daun katuk, dan
merongkih yang tumbuh sepanjang tahun.
Berbeda lagi dengan kelompok buah-
buahan. Buah kenitu, mengkudu, sirsak,
bengkuang, tidak akan bisa diharapkan
tumbuh pada musim hujan. Namun,
masyarakat masih bisa mengkonsumsi buah
srikaya, kedundung, rambusa, dan pisang
pada musim hujan.
“Kami membuat kalender musiman tana-
man pangan liar. Harapannya, masyarakat
bisa memiliki alternatif dan memanfaatkan
tanaman pangan liar sehingga tidak kha-
watir kehabisan karena selama ini, mereka
hanya bergantung pada bahan-bahan
makanan yang dijual,” tutur Annis.
“Kami ingin mensosialisasikan kepada
masyarakat bahwa ada banyak bahan
pangan yang ada di sekitar kita yang bisa
dimanfaatkan tanpa harus membeli,” tutur

Bahan pangan dari tanaman liar ini me-
miliki kandungan gizi yang tak bisa dipan-

buah, umbi dari ketiga kelompok sayur-
sayuran itu mengandung zat gizi atau bioak-
tif yang bermanfaat bagi kesehatan tubuh.
Pada jenis umbi-umbian liar, masyarakat
bisa memanfaatkannya sebagai makanan
pelengkap pokok yang menyumbang zat-zat
makro, terutama potensi sumber energi dan
karbohidrat yang cukup besar setelah beras.
Annis mengakui, kandungan gizi pangan
liar belum banyak yang terdokumentasikan.
Oleh karena itu, melalui penelitian yang ia
lakukan selama dua tahun ini, ia melakukan
eksplorasi informasi dengan melibatkan
masyarakat setempat, dinas terkait, dan
kelompok tani.

Setelah dokumentasi kandungan gizi ter-
kumpul, pihaknya memilah mana pangan
liar yang ‘layak’ untuk lebih diangkat dan
dikenalkan kepada masyarakat. Sebelum
itu, ia juga membuat olahan-olahan dari
tanaman liar sesuai selera masyarakat.
Misalnya, membuat mi berbumbu dan
kue kering berbahan daun kelor. Tujuan-
nya, tak lain untuk membuat masyarakat
tertarik memanfaatkan bahan pangan liar di
kehidupan sehari-hari.
Pada tahun 2015, Annis dan mahasiswan-
ya melakukan survei ke beberapa sekolah
dasar untuk menguji makanan yang telah
ia olah. Hasilnya, anak-anak sekolah dasar
menyukai rasa dari makanan yang mereka
buat seperti mi remas dan makanan ringan
dari daun kelor.
“Kami pilih mana yang lebih poten-
sial dari unsur gizinya, bioaktifnya dan

kemudahan pengolahan, dan mana yang
berpotensi untuk dibudidayakan secara
massal. Dari umbi, contohnya suweg dan

Utilizing Wild Foods to Cope with
Food Insecurity
In June 2016, The Economist Intelligence
Unit (EIU) released Global Food Security
Index (GFSI). The index showed the positions
of countries in the world based on food poli-
cies implemented in 113 countries. Indonesia
is ranked 71st after being 76th in
2014 and 2015.
There are three main
aspects for GFSI calcu-
lation, affordability,
availability, quality
and safety. For the
affordability
category, Indo-
nesia’s score has
improved from
46.8 to 50.3. The
availability score
has improved from
51.2 to 54.1 while the
quality and safety has
improved 41.9 to 42. This
improving score made Indone-
sian food policies included as “biggest
changes” according to EIU.
Even though the food policies have been
implemented by the government, it does
not mean that Indonesia is free from food
insecurity risk. In 2015, there is 15 percent
of 398 regencies in Indonesia vulnerable to
food insecurity according to World Food
Programme.
A food nutrition expert of Faculty of Pub-
lic Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga, Dr.
Ir. Annis Catur Adi, M.Si., believed that food
security issues in Indonesia can still be man-
aged. One way to do it is by utilizing wild
plants and animals as food sources.
“According to FAO (Food Agricultural
Organization), wild foods are also impor-
tant source of vitamin, mineral and other
nutrients, which can complete dietary intake
of food insecure group, such as children and
elderlies,” stated Annis.
Food Agricultural Organization’s opinion
is supported by Annis as wild foods can be
easily found in surrounding environment.
His statement was based on research he had
conducted in 2014. Annis collected the data
in Bangkalan, Sampang, and Pamekasan.
In the sub-districts of Blega, Bangkalan,
Annis found at least 37 wild plants, includ-

ing 16 species of vegetables, 14 species of fruit
and 7 species of tubers.
Some of the vegetables are winged bean,
Indian camphorweed, sweet leaf, forest
spinach, okra leaves and seed, and stinkvine.
Some of the fruit are, bush passion
fruit, mundu, coconut, sour-
sop, jicama and sanek
while for the tubers are
yam, elephant yam,
taro, sweet potato,
jarud, lesser yam,
and larbe.
The locals
should not be
worried about
wild foods availa-
bility. Some are not
available anytime,
but some others are
always available. Some
species are available only in
drought season or rainy season
but the wild plants growing seasons
complete each other for the whole year. So,
the locals can get what they need anytime.
For example, in vegetable group, forest
spinach, the winter melon, stinkvine and
rakarah do not grow in drought season but
winged bean, leadtree, Indian camphorweed,
sweet leaf and moringa are available for the
whole year.
For the fruit group, star apple, cheese fruit,
soursop and jicama do not grow in rainy
season. But the locals can consume sugar
apple, ambarella, bush passion fruit and
banana in rainy season.
“We have made wild foods seasonal
calendar. Hopefully the community will have
alternatives and they will utilize wild foods
so they won’t worry about the lack of food
source as all this time they are dependent to

them which can be consume without hav-

nutrients or bioactive compounds very useful
for health. The community can utilize wild
tuberous plants as complementary food
which provides macro substances, especially
their potentials as the source of energy and
carbohydrate.
Annis admitted that wild food nutrition
has not been well documented. Therefore,
through research he conducted for two years,
he conducted information exploration involv-
ing the local inhabitants, related agency and
farming groups.
After the nutritional data collected, his
unit sorted which wild foods deserve to be
introduced to the wider society. He then
developed food products made of those wild
food plants and adjusted them to the public
taste. For example, flavored noodles and
cookies made of moringa leaves. It was aimed
to make people interested to utilize wild food
source in daily life.
In 2015, Annis and his students conducted
a survey to some schools to test the food he
developed. The elementary school students
liked the flavor of their noodles and snacks
which are made of moringa leaves.
“We chose plants which show great poten-
tials in nutrients, bioactive compounds and
easy to be processed and mass-cultured. From
the tuber plants, there are elephant foot yam
and country potato. From the leaves, there is
moringa. The country potatoes and the usual
potatoes are quite different as the country
potatoes have more bioactive compounds,”
Annis added.
At the moment, Annis and his team are
making efforts realize his dream, to make
wild food plants as the main food source,
especially in food insecure areas. To achieve
that goal, he is preparing scientific proofs to
be disseminated to local government. It is
aimed to accelerate nutritional improvement
in food insecure areas such as Madura. (*)
Gagas Metode Penentuan Jenis
Kelamin Burung
Eduardus Bimo Aksono H. (Dr., M.Kes.,
drh.) adalah dosen Fakultas Kedokteran
Hewan (FKH) yang selama ini menjadi
peneliti di Tropical Disease Diagnostic
Center (TDDC). Dia bersama tim peneliti
di TDDC, yang merupakan bagian dari
Institute of Tropical Disease (ITD) UNAIR,
tak pernah henti membuat terobosan yang
aplikatif di masyarakat. Mereka selalu
menyerap persoalan di akar rumput dalam
segala bidang, lantas menciptakan solusi
kongkret.
Salah satu karya Bimo dan kawan-kawan
adalah pencetusan metode untuk melihat
jenis kelamin pada unggas monomorfik
(hewan yang sulit dibedakan hanya dari
struktur anatomi dan morfologi). Setelah
melakukan riset di rentang 2012-2014,
TDDC sanggup memastikan, apakah seekor
unggas berjenis betina atau jantan, hanya
dengan mengamati sampel bulu.
Bimo menjelaskan, riset tersebut berawal
dari diskusinya dengan seorang peternak
burung Cucak Rawa asal Wisma Mukti
Sukolilo bernama Gunawan. Waktu itu,
Gunawan mengeluhkan soal sulitnya
mengetahui jenis kelamin burung. Kendala
itu berimbas pada kesukaran mengawinkan
pasangan. Yang kemudian berimplikasi
pada kerumitan dalam upaya pengembang-
biakan. Problem ini, kata Gunawan, tidak
hanya menjadi masalah dirinya sendiri. Na-
mun juga, menjadi persoalan bagi seluruh
peternak Cucak Rawa.
Dari hasil obrolan itu, kata Bimo, tim
TDDC UNAIR bergerak untuk melakukan
penelitian. Selain pengamatan lapangan,
dibutuhkan pula pencarian sampel dari
burung sebagai bahan untuk diamati di
laboratorium. Awalnya, sempat terpikir
untuk mengambil sampel DNA dari darah.
Namun, burung Cucak Rawa rentan stress.
Pengambilan darah bisa menyebabkan
mereka tertekan bahkan tak mustahil lekas
mati.
Akhirnya, diputuskan untuk mengambil
sampel berupa bulu. Dengan pertimban-
gan, gampang didapatkan dan relatif tidak
mengganggu burung. Karena, bisa diper-
oleh dari jatuhan bulu di sekitar burung.
Yang terpenting, di ujung bulu terdapat
Kalamus yang mengandung kromosom
pembawa jenis kelamin.
Sampel itu kemudian dibawa ke labora-
torium untuk diamati dengan metode PCR
(kependekan dari istilah bahasa Inggris
polymerase chain reaction), yang merupa-
kan suatu teknik atau metode perbanyakan
(replikasi) DNA secara enzimatik tanpa
menggunakan organisme. Dari sejumlah
tahap pengamatan sampel kromosom yang
dilakukan di TDDC bakal tampak jenis
kelamin burung. Tak hanya Cucak Rawa,
metode ini juga bisa melihat jenis kelamin
pada unggas monomorfik (hewan yang sulit
dibedakan hanya dari struktur anatomi dan
morfologi) lainnya.
“Dari bulu itu, kami akan melihat kro-
mosom. Kalau kromosomnya heterozigot
atau Z dan W, berarti betina. Jika kromo-
somnya homozigot atau ZZ, berarti jantan,”
kata pria yang juga menjabat sebagai Sek-
retars Pusat Informasi dan Humas UNAIR
tersebut.
Pengembangan teknologi yang diinisiasi
oleh UNAIR itu sudah sukses menerobos
banyak mitos. Selama ini, penentuan jenis
kelamin Cucak Rawa sekadar mengacu
pada kebiasaan. Misalnya, ada yang bilang
kalau kepala burung besar, maka ia jantan.
Atau, jika buntutnya pendek, ia betina.
Perspektif itu nyaris seratus persen salah.
Mungkin, kata Gunawan, yang paling
mendekati benar hanya soal suara. Ada
perbedaan suara antara burung jantan dan
betina.
Persoalannya, suara itu hanya dapat dide-
teksi oleh orang yang sudah lama bergelut
di bidang ini. Problem kembali bertambah
karena suara tersebut hanya terdengar
saat burung birahi. Yang jadi masalah, ada
burung jantan yang suka ikut-ikut suara
betina. Jadi, telaah melalui aspek suara ini
cukup rumit.
Nah, ketidaksanggupan untuk menen-
tukan jenis kelamin burung ini memiliki
imbas turunan yang beragam. Mitos-mitos
yang tak dapat dipertanggungjawabkan pun
makin mengemuka. Contohnya, ada yang
mengatakan kalau burung Cucak Rawa sulit
diternak, gampang stress dan lain seba-
gainya.
Padahal, kunci sukses ternak Cucak Rawa
itu adalah mengetahui jenis kelamin. Kalau
sudah dapat jenis kelamin, akan lebih mu-
dah menjodohkan. Keuntungan ekonomis-
nya jadi jelas dan bisa diukur. Nah, di luar
sana banyak yang masih pakai pendekatan
tebak-tebakan. Jadi, satu kandang itu bisa
diisi burung-burung homo atau lesbi. Oto-
matis tidak bisa bertelur dan berkembang
biak.

Bimo mengungkapkan, metode ini sudah
terbukti bermanfaat di masyarakat. Dari
segi ekonomi, sudah mampu menaikkan
nilai jual burung. Dengan demikian, sum-
bangsih kongkretnya dapat dirasakan lang-
sung bagi peternak atau penghobi burung.
Tak hanya di Surabaya, hasil penelitian ini
juga sudah dirasakan masyarakat di daerah
lain. Misalnya, Blitar, Jakarta, Semarang,

tarakan, metode dan teknologi yang digagas
Bimo dan tim memiliki nilai ekonomis
tinggi. Maksudnya, keuntungan dari segi
materi saat berbisnis dengan sentuhan
ilmiah seperti ini memberikan margin laba
yang jauh lebih besar dari sebelumnya.
“Dulu, dari dua puluh pasang burung,
yang menghasilkan cuma dua pasang.
Kenapa? Diduga kuat, pasangan yang lain
itu jenis kelaminnya sama,” ungkap pria
yang mulai merintis bisnis ini sejak 2009
tersebut.
Saat pertama kali menggunakan me-
tode ini di tahun 2014, Gunawan langsung
memasangkan 30 ekor burung miliknya.
Dari 15 pasang itu, yang berhasil menetas-
kan telur dan menghasilkan sejumlah 10
pasang.
Jadi, bila dulu yang menghasilkan seka-

dar 10 persen dari jumlah pasangan. Setelah disentuh teknologi ini, yang menghasilkan mencapai 66
persen.
“Tapi, bukan berarti yang lima pasang itu jenis kelaminnya sama, lho. Mereka tetap berpasangan dan
bisa menghasilkan. Hanya, nunggunya harus lebih sabar,” tambah Gunawan.
Perbandingan yang lebih gampang, berdasarkan pengalaman Gunawan, dulu peternakannya sekadar
menghasilakan laba bersih maksimal dua juta rupiah perbulan. Saat ini, bisa mencapai minimal 38 juta
perbulan. Bahkan, lelaki yang sekarang sudah memiliki puluhan pasang burung Cucak Rawa itu sudah
berencana mindahkan penangkarannya ke kawasan Pandaan. Sebab, di sana, dia bisa beternak dengan
lebih lapang dan cuacanya jauh lebih pas buat burung. (*)

Birds’ Sex The technological development initiated

Eduardus Bimo Aksono H. (Dr., M.Kes.,
drh.) is a lecturer of Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine (FKH) who is also a researcher of
Tropical Disease Diagnostic Center (TDDC).
With a team in TDDC as a part of Institute
of Tropical Disease (ITD) UNAIR, he always
tries to make an applicative breakthrough
for the society. They identify a problem at the
grass root level in all sectors and propose a
real solution.
One of his team’s works is the method of
to determine bird sex on monomorphic birds
(animals which their sexes are indistinguish-
able from its anatomical and morphological
structures). After conducting research from
2012 to 2014, TDDC can determine if a bird
is a male or a female by merely see their
feathers’ color.
Bimo explained that the research was in-
spired by his discussion with a breeder straw
headed bulbul from Wisma Mukti Sukolilo
Surabaya named Gunawan. At that time
Gunawan complained
how it was difficult
to determine the bird sex. This problem made
him difficult to mate and breed them. The
problem was not his own only, it was a prob-
lem for all straw headed bulbul breeders.
From this discussion, Bimo and his team
conducted a research. Besides field obser-
vation, bird sample collection was also
needed for laboraty observation. At first, they
thought of taking DNA samples from the
blood, but the straw headed bulbul is vulner-
able to being stressed. The blood extraction
process might be able to make them stressed
or even kill them.
Finally, the sample is taken from the feath-
ers. They are easy to get and it will not make
the birds stressed. They can be acquired from
the fallen feathers around the birds. The most
important part of the feathers is the calamus
containing chromosome of sex.
The sample then brought to the laboratory
and observed with PCR method (polymerase
chain reaction), which is a technique or a
method to replicate DNA enzymatically
without the organisms. From the
series of observations con-
ducted to chromosome
samples in TDDC the
birds’ sex can be deter-
mined. Not only for the
straw headed bulbul, but
this method can also be
used to other monomor-
phic birds.
“From the feather, we
will observe the chromo-
some. If it is heterozygotic
or Z and W, it is a female.
If the chromosome is ho-
mozygotic or ZZ, it means
it is a male,” said the man
by UNAIR has proven a lot of myths. All this
time, the bird sexing of straw-headed bulbul
only refer to its behavior. For example, some
people say that a bigger head would mean a
male, or if the tail shorter then it is a female.
Those perspectives are almost 100 percent
incorrect. Maybe, according to Gunawan,
the closest thing to truth was only about
the sound. There is a slight sound difference
between the male and the female.
The problem is, the sound can only be
detected by someone who has been in the
field for a long time. Furthermore, the sound
is only heard when the bird wants to mate.
“The problem is, there is male bird which
sounds like the female. So, determining sexes
through their sound is quite complicated,” he
said.
The inability to determine the bird sex
affects the breeders in various ways. Irrespon-
sible myths are getting more popular. For
example, some say that straw headed bulbul
is difficult to breed, gets stressed easily and
so on.
The key to a successful straw-
headed bulbul breeding is to know the sex of
the bird. If we know it, pairing process will
get easier. The economical benefit will be
clear and can be measured. People out there
mostly still use guessing approach. So, there
can be a pair of homosexual in a cage. They
will never lay eggs and breed.
Bimo conveyed that this method is proven
to be useful in the community. Economi-
cally, it has been able to raise the price of the
bird. So, the researchers’ contributions have
already been significant for the birds’ breeder
or hobbyist. Not only in Surabaya, but the
research also affects the wider society such
as in Blitar, Jakarta, Semarang and other

High Economic Value
Gunawan, one of the breeders supported by TDDC researcher Ed-
uardus Bimo Aksono H. (Dr., M.Kes., drh) explained that this method
or technique initiated by Bimo and his team has high economic value.
The profit of having a business with science development will be
greater than before using science.
“Before this, from twenty pairs of birds, only two pairs bred well.
Why? We assumed that the other pairs had same sex,” said the man
who started his business in 2009.
When this sexing method was applied in 2014, Gunawan paired 30
birds of his. From those 15 pairs, there were 10 pairs which laid eggs
and bred well.

So, if there used to be only 10 percent of the total pairs bred well,
after using a scientific method, there are 66 percent of the pairs bred
well.
“But, the five pairs did not mean to have same sex. They were still
matched and finally bred. We just had to wait more patiently,” said
Gunawan.
To provide a basis comparison, based on Gunawan’s experience, his
breeding used to generate net profit about Rp 2 million for a month.
But at the moment, it can reach Rp 38 million for a month. The man
who has dozen pairs of straw headed bulbul has planned to move his
breeding facility to Pandaan as he will have better space and better

sudah menyampaikan kesiapan untuk

Prof Nyoman meny-
ampaikan, Excelzyme
adalah nama dagang.
Merujuk pada temuan dia
dan kawan-kawannya,
terhadap enzim yang
memiliki banyak kegu-
naan. Excelzyme sendiri
terdiri dari enzim-enzim
konsorsium yang bekerja dan
beraktifitas untuk memaksimal-
kan limbah pertanian, nan kaya lignoselu-
losa.
Yang menarik, bahan dasar Excelzyme
berasal dari tempat-tempat kaya sumber
daya alam di Indonesia. Jadi, buah pe-
mikiran Prof Nyoman dan segenap peneliti
dari Laboratorium Proteomik Institute
of Tropical Disease salah satu tujuannya
adalah memaksimalkan potensi yang ada di
nusantara.
Disampaikan Prof. Nyoman, penelitian
ini sudah dilakukan sejak tahun 90-an.
Fokusnya dilaksanakan pada sekitar 1999,
dan masih berjalan hingga saat ini. Pada
2007, telah mulai dikomersialisasikan,
meski masih dalam lingkup terbatas. Pada
2011, patennya terbit, sedangkan pada
2016, terbit paten formulasi produksinya.
Sampai sekarang, pengembangan formula
ini setidaknya sudah berjalan lebih dari 17
tahun.
Produk Excelzyme saat ini sudah memi-
liki empat varian. Excelzyme 1 (membantu
proses deinking untuk daur ulang kertas),
Excelzyme 2 (membantu pembuatan pakan
ternak organik), Excelzyme 3 (membantu
pembuatan pupuk organik), dan Excelzyme
4 (varian ini masih dalam pengembangan,

ditujukan untuk proses pengurangan lignin
yang aplikasi diterapkan pada industri ker-
tas atau industri berbahan dasar kayu). “Ex-
celzyme dicetuskan untuk bisa memberikan
sumbangsih pada industri
ramah lingkungan. Dengan
produk kami, pemakaian
bahan kimia untuk se-
jumlah keperluan dapat
diminimalkan,” papar
Prof Nyoman.
Proses daur ulang
kertas, umumnya mem-
butuhkan banyak bahan
kimia. Limbahnya, tentu tidak
baik buat lingkungan. Dengan
produk Excelzyme, peng-
gunaan bahan kimia dapat
ditekan sekecil mungkin.
Dengan hasil daur ulang yang
semaksimal mungkin.
Dengan temuan aplikatif ini, Indo-
nesia bisa secara bertahap melepas-
kan diri dari ketergantungan terhadap
impor enzim. Disampaikan Prof. Nyoman,
enzim dengan fungsi yang sama dengan Ex-
celzyme, per kilogram harganya bisa men-
capai 150 sampai 200 ribu rupiah. Sedang-
kan produk dalam negeri yang “diracik” tim
UNAIR, nilainya jauh di bawah itu.
Fakta ini menunjukkan bahwa
kemandirian bangsa di bidang ini dapat
segera dicapai. Sekaligus, logis dan realistis
untuk terkabul. Meski memang, butuh
proses yang tidak sekejap mata. Asalkan,
ada keseriusan dari pihak kampus dan
perusahaan dalam negeri untuk terus
mengembangkannya. Yang harus diyakini,
khazanah sumber daya alam Indonesia
sudah tidak terbantahkan. Maka itu, perlu
dioptimalkan untuk kesejahteraan bangsa.
“Baik kampus maupun pihak swasta dan
pihak lain yang punya visi membangun
kemandirian bangsa harus peduli pada pe-
nelitian. Khususnya, penelitian yang sudah
dijalankan dalam tempo lama dan konsisten
serta telah tampak hasilnya. Karena me-
mang, penelitian itu butuh proses panjang,”

Mengeksplorasi kekayaan alam lokal mel-
alui penelitian enzim, kemudian meman-
faatkan limbah pertanian demi pengem-
bangan bidang argoindustri, adalah aktifitas
yang dilakukan Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri
Puspaningsih, Dra., M.Si. bersama tim
di laboratorium Proteomik ITD UNAIR.
Excelzyme, nama dagang yang dipakai
mereka atas temuan aplikatif itu, diapresiasi
oleh Direktur Pengembangan Teknologi
Industri Dr. Eng, Hotmatua Daulay, M.Eng,
dari Kemenristekdikti. Hotmatua merespon
positif terhadap keberhasilan UNAIR dalam
menghilirisasi hasil penelitian menjadi
produk yang akan siap dipakai oleh industri
dan masyarakat. “Ini merupakan langkah
tepat dalam menyikapi persaingan,” tutur
Hotmatua.
Direktur Utama PT Petrosida Gresik
Hery Widyatmoko juga memberikan
respon positif. Dia yakin, produk ini bakal
memberi sumbangsih di masyarakat.
Termasuk, memompa optimisme kemandi-
rian bangsa. “Tentu saja kami mendukung
pengembangan dan penelitian gagasan ini,”
papar dia.
Rektor UNAIR Prof. Dr. M. Nasih, S.E.,
M.T., Ak., mengutarakan, ada banyak
peneliti di UNAIR yang memiliki produk
bagus. Semua itu siap dihilirisasi atau
diperbanyak dalam lingkup industri yang
luas. “Kami berkomitmen untuk mencip-
takan gagasan, konsep, maupun temuan
yang bermanfaat kongkret dan langsung
di masyarakat,” ujar Guru Besar Fakultas

Support Self Supporting Nation

The eco-friendly product called Excelzyme
produced by Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Pus-
paningsih, M.Si. and her team, will be mass
produced soon. PT. Petrosida Gresik is ready
to fully support. The agreement of mass pro-
duction between UNAIR and PT. Petrosida
Gresik was stated officially on Wednesday,
March 8 in the plenary room, Management
Office Building UNAIR.
Prof Nyoman said that Excelzyme is a
registered trademark. It refers to her team’s
finding on an enzyme with lots of uses. Exc-
elzyme itself consists of enzymes combination
useful to maximize the agricultural waste
which is rich in lignocellulose.
The material of Excelzyme is acquired
from areas with natural resource wealth in
Indonesia. So this product created by Prof.
Nyoman and her researchers in Proteomics
Laboratory in the Institute of Tropical Dis-
ease is aimed to make the most of Indonesian
potentials.
Prof. Nyoman said that this research has
been conducted since the 90’s. It was started
in 1999 and it is still making progress until
now. In 2007, its commercial use was started
but only to a limited scale. In 2011, the pat-
ent was issued and followed by the produc-
tion formulation patent issuance in 2016. Its
development has been running for at least 17
years.
Excelzyme product has four varieties.
Excelzyme 1 (supporting the deinking process Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher
in paper recycle), Excelzyme 2 (supporting in
organic feed production), Excelzyme 3 (sup-
porting in organic fertilizer production), and
Excelzyme 4 (it is still under development,
used to reduce lignin and applied in paper
industry or other industry using wood).
“Exelzyme was created as a contribution to
the ecofriendly industry. With our product,
the uses of chemicals for some pro-
cedures can be minimized,” stated
Prof. Nyoman.
The paper recycle process gener-
ally uses chemicals. The industrial
waste causes environmental prob-
lems. With Excelzyme, chemical
uses can be limited and the result of
recycle process is also better.
With this applicative finding,
Indonesia is ready to stop relying
on imported enzyme. Prof. Nyoman
said, the price of enzyme with
similar functions as Excelzyme can
reach Rp 150 – 200 thousand while the prod-
uct developed by UNAIR is much cheaper
than that.
It means that the nation can be
self-supporting in this field and it is logical
and realistic to be achieved. Even though it
will take a lot of time and processes, it can be
done as long as the academic and industrial
sector serious in developing the product.
One thing for sure, Indonesia is undeniably
wealthy of natural resources. It should be
optimized for the national welfare.
“The university or private sector or other
parties with a vision of self-supporting na-
tion, should have concern to research, espe-

developed from the Indonesian microor-
