Indonesian cargo plane crashes into mountain, 3 missing
15 Sep 2021 06:21PM(Updated: 15 Sep 2021 06:21PM)
JAKARTA: A small cargo plane with three crew members on board crashed into a mountain in Indonesia's jungle-clad Papua region on Wednesday
(Sep 15), police said.
The Rimbun Air flight lost contact with air control authorities shortly before it was due to land at an airport in Papua's Intan Jaya regency, police and
transport officials said.
"The weather at the airport was not supportive, it was predicted that the plane would land but the runway was not clearly visible," Papua police
spokesman Ahmad Mustofa Kamal said, adding a search operation for the three-man crew was underway.
The wreckage of the Twin Otter 300 aircraft was found by locals more than three hours later near a village in the highlands, Papua police said.
Images released by the rescue team on Wednesday showed the debris strewn on the jungle floor.
Indonesia's fast-growing aviation sector has long been marred by safety concerns, with its airlines once banned from US and European airspace.
A Boeing 737-500 operated by Indonesian carrier Sriwijaya Air plunged roughly 3,000m in less than a minute before crashing into waters off
Jakarta earlier this year, killing 62 people on board.

PADANG: Seven people were killed in a landslide
triggered by torrential storms on the Indonesian island of
Sumatra, authorities said, as they warned that continuing
rainfall could cause further ground movement on Friday
(Oct 1).
A day after the landslide hit two adjacent houses in Padang
Pariaman district on Wednesday, seven bodies were pulled
out of the mud, while another person was rescued alive with
broken bones.
"All victims have been found after we were able to use heavy
equipment yesterday afternoon," local disaster mitigation
agency official Rumainur, who like many Indonesians only
has one name, told AFP on Friday.
Authorities warned residents to stay vigilant because heavy
rains in the area will continue until Saturday.
"Please beware of the danger of ground movement triggered
by the rainfall," spokesman for the National Disaster
Mitigation Agency Abdul Muhari said in a Friday statement.
More than 300 houses and 80ha of rice fields in Padang
Pariaman have been inundated. Strong winds also damaged
houses, kiosks and vehicles, and knocked down trees. One
person died and four others were injured when one fell on
them as they were visiting a graveyard on Wednesday.
Local authorities have announced a state of emergency for
14 days and opened public kitchens. In the West Sumatran
provincial capital Padang, more than 400 people have been
evacuated after heavy rain caused flooding in the city.
Fatal landslides and flash floods are common across
Indonesia during the rainy season, which started in
September in Sumatra. The disasters are often caused by
deforestation and poor mitigation planning, according to
environmentalists.
In April this year more than 200 people were killed in a
cluster of far-eastern islands in Indonesia and neighboring
Timor-Leste as Tropical Cyclone Seroja turned small
communities into wastelands of mud and uprooted trees.

Text for task 5
a. (CNN)Korean exports seem to be sweeping the world's screens, headsets and runways --
and now more than 20 words of Korean origin have been added to the Oxford English
Dictionary (OED) in its September update.
b. 'Korean wave' sweeps Oxford English Dictionary as new words are added By Amy
Woodyatt, CNN, October 5, 2021.
c. Koreans use the term "hallyu" to describe the phenomenon, which refers to the "Korean
wave" of entertainment that has swept across Asia and now much of the world -- and now
this word has been added to the OED.
d. "Hanbok," the traditional Korean costume worn by both men and women, "aegyo," a type
of cuteness or charm considered characteristically Korean, and "mukbang," a video
featuring a person eating large amounts of food and talking to an audience, were also
included in September's additions.
e. Over the past two decades, South Korea has churned out entertainment coveted by millions
of fans, from K-pop -- added to the OED in 2016 -- to "Squid Game," the South Korean
fictional drama billed by Netflix as possibly its "biggest show ever."
f. Food is also prominent in the update, including "banchan," a small side dish of vegetables,
served along with rice as part of a typical Korean meal, "bulgogi," which are thin slices of
beef or pork that are marinated and grilled or stir-fried, and "dongchimi," a type of kimchi
made with radish and typically also containing napa cabbage.
g. The interjection "fighting!" is used to convey encouragement, incitement, or support --
much like "go for it!," the OED said. Meanwhile, "skinship" is a blend of the English
words "skin" and "kinship," referring to the touching or close physical contact between
parent and child or between lovers or friends.
h. "K-drama," a Korean language television produced in South Korea, was also added. But
not all of the recently added words are "borrowings, reborrowings, or loan translations
from Korean," the OED said, adding that several words are either new formations, or "new
senses of existing English words."
i. "The adoption and development of these Korean words in English also demonstrate how
lexical innovation is no longer confined to the traditional centres of English in the United
Kingdom and the United States -- they show how Asians in different parts of the continent
invent and exchange words within their own local contexts, then introduce these words to
the rest of the English-speaking world, thus allowing the Korean wave to continue to ripple
on the sea of English words," the OED added.
j. "We are all riding the crest of the Korean wave, and this can be felt not only in film, music,
or fashion, but also in our language, as evidenced by some of the words and phrases of
Korean origin included in the latest update of the Oxford English Dictionary," the OED
said in a statement.
