Abstract
Background: Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease (a virus that is transmitted from animals to humans)
that can heal itself. Symptoms of monkeypox in humans are almost the same as smallpox which was
eradicated in 1980. Although the symptoms are milder than smallpox, monkeypox spreads sporadically in
several areas in Africa. Like the Variola virus that causes smallpox, the virus that causes monkeypox
(Monkeypox Virus) is also a species that belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus and the family Poxviridae. It
was first discovered in 1958 at the State Serum Institute of Copenhagen, Denmark, when there were 2
smallpox-like cases suffered by a colony of apes kept for research. So that the next smallpox is called
monkeypox or monkey pox. However, it was later discovered that the main reservoir of this disease is
rodents such as rats. Monkeypox in humans was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(Zaire/DRC) in 1970. Conclusion: Monkeypox disease is a zoonotic disease, therefore avoiding animals
that are the main cause of monkeypox disease is prevention so does not spread.
