TIMUN EMAS (GOLDEN CUCUMBER)

A long time ago, there was an old woman who lived in a Dadapan village. She
was poor and lonely because she did not have a child. One day, a giant gave the old
woman a golden cucumber. There was a child in it. The giant wanted to take back the
child when she grew up. The woman named the child Timun Emas.

When Timun Emas was seventeen years old, the giant wanted to take her back.
But she did not want to. So, she ran away to save her life. Her mother gave her mud,
needles, and salt. “Throw these one by one when the giant comes near you,” said her
mother.

Then, Timun Emas ran very fast. But the giant ran faster. Soon, he was near her.
Quickly, she threw the mud. When it hit the ground, it became a large swamp. But the
giant could cross it easily. Next, she threw the needles. They hit the ground.
Suddenly, there were trees with needle leaves in front of the giant. The giant could get
through the trees. But his body was covered by needles. He was in pain. After that,
Timun Emas threw the salt. It turned into an ocean. It was very deep. The giant could
not cross the ocean. Because it was too deep for him to swim.

Finally, Timun Emas was free from the giant. She went home to her mother. They
lived happily.

KOALAS ARE VERY CUTE ANIMALS

Koalas are the most famous animals from Australia. They are tree-
climbing mammals. Many people like koalas because they are very cute.
Koalas have thick grey fur, round eyes, large ears, and short big noses.
However, they have no tails.
Koalas eat only the leaves of eucalyptus trees. They cannot eat anything
else. There are too many koalas eating the leaves. Now thousands of the trees
lose their leaves. Most of them die.
If the population of koalas is not reduced, soon eucalyptus trees will be
hard to find. It means koalas will lose their food.

A Theater

A theater is a place where people entertain the audience.


The people who perform, called actors and actresses, act in plays on a
stage.
A stage can be a raised platform, or it can be a part of the floor in a room, either in
the centre of the room or against a wall. The audience is a very important part of a
theater because it is for the audience that the actors and actresses act, and the
playwright writes. Without an audience, they are only rehearsing or practising.
A theater can be anywhere- in home,school auditorium, park and a hall.
Theater means action. In this text, theater is used in connection with performances
on stage by live actors and actresses. It is living theater.
Theater in the East differs greatly from that of the West. The Asian theater
is, for the most part, nonrealistic, or symbolic. Western theater, on the other hand,
tends to be realistic.

WHALES

Whales are sea-living mammals. They therefore breathe air but cannot
survive on land. Some species are very large indeed and the blue whale, which
can exceed 30 m in length, is the largest animal to have live on earth.
Superficially, the whale looks rather like fish, but there are important differences
in its external structure: Its tail consists of a pair of broad, flat, horizontal
paddles (the tail of fish is vertical) and it has a single nostril on top of its large,
broad head. The skin is smooth and shiny and beneath it there is a layer of fat
(blubber). This is up to 30 cm in thickness and serves to conserve heat and body
fluids.

- Suddenly, he fell into a big deep hole in the forest. He asked for some
help.
- Soon, the elephant went down into the hole.
- He asked the mousedeer about what had happened to him.
- A mousedeer was walking down the forest in the afternoon. The sky
looked very dark.
- At last the mousedeer left the elephant alone in the hole and ran for
home as fast as he could.
- The mousedeer said that he avoided the sky that would fall into the
ground. He asked the elephant to hide in the hole with him.
- Fortunately, there was an elephant who passed the way. He saw the
mousedeer in the hole.
- He said goodbye and thanked to the poor elephant.
- Then, the mousedeer said that he wanted to see the situation of the
forest. He jumped into the elephant’s back and went out of the hole.

On day, an old farmer called his two sons to his bedside. Both of them never did hard work. “Because
I am already old, I am about to leave you, but I have provided for you. There is great wealth in our land. You
had better work hard. Dig up the garden and share everything you find.”
The sons thought that their father meant a hidden treasure. “Let’s start digging right away.” cried the
old one. “Perhaps we wait until father dies.” said the other.
A fee days later, the old man died. The two sons rushed outside with their spades and began digging.
They dug their graden for several days, for weeks, and for months.
Alas! They didn’t find any treasure in their garden, but the land had been dug so carefully. In time it
produced the nicest fruits in the village.
