TUJUAN PERUSAHAAN???

What is a company‟s objective? Economic theory suggests that a company‟s

objective is to generate rents or returns for all resources employed through a
process of resources deployment.
Four different types of rent are commonly distinguished by the economist:
(1) Ricardian rents which are extraordinary profits earned from resources
that are in fixed and limited supply, (2) Monopoly rents which can be
achieved by government protection or by collusive arrangement when
barriers to potential competitors are high, (3) Schumpetarian or
entrepreneurial rents which may be achieved by risk-taking and
entrepreneurial insight in an uncertain/complex environment, and (4) Pareto
rents or composite quasi-rents which are appropriable from idiosyncratic
physical capital, human capital and dedicated assets when they are firm-
specific(Amit & Schoemaker, 1993; Conner, 1991; Mahoney, 1995).

Firms Use to Conceive and Implement their Strategies”

Resources Are Immobile

Resources Can Vary in Scarcity, Substitutability, Value

and Imitability
Barney (1991)

Resources:
Valuable
Capabilities that either help a firm to exploit opportunities to create
value for customers or to neutralize threats in the environment

Rare
Capabilities that are possessed by few, if any, current or potential
competitors

Difficult to Imitate
Capabilities that other firms cannot develop easily, usually due to
unique historical conditions, causal ambiguity or social complexity

Non-Substitutable
Capabilities that do not have strategic equivalents, such as firm-
specific knowledge or trust-based relationships
Resources:
Tangible
Intangible

Capabilities: Bundles of Resources to Accomplish Tasks (e.g., R&D)

(Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 1995)
Core Competencies: Capabilities that Firms Perform Especially Well

Business Level Strategy

• How do we compete in a specific business arena?
• Four objectives of business-level strategy
• Generate sustainable competitive advantages
• Develop and nurture (potentially) valuable capabilities
• Respond to environmental changes
• Approval of functional level strategies

PROF. AGF
RESOURCE BASED THEORY
( JAY BARNEY)

PROF. AGF
RESOURCE BASED THEORY
( JAY BARNEY)

Business-Level Strategy
• The primary objective of business-level strategy is
to create “sources of sustainable competitive
advantage”.

• What is sustainable competitive advantage?

• There are many definitions, used by different people in
different ways.
• What follows is a practical description. But first, we
need to back up a bit…

PROF. AGF
RESOURCE BASED THEORY
( JAY BARNEY)

Sustainable Competitive Advantage

• An asset is anything the firm owns or controls.
• “Asset” is to Accounting as “Resource” is to Management.
• Types of assets:
• Physical: plant equipment, location, access to raw materials
• Human: training, experience, judgment, decision-making skills,
intelligence, relationships, knowledge
• Organizational: Culture, formal reporting structures, control
systems, coordinating systems, informal relationships

PROF. AGF
RESOURCE BASED THEORY
( JAY BARNEY)

Sustainable Competitive Advantage

• A capability is usually considered a “bundle” of assets or resources to perform a
business process (which is composed of individual activities)
• E.g. The product development process involves conceptualization, product
design, pilot testing, new product launch in production, process debugging, etc.

• All firms have capabilities. However, a firm will usually focus on certain
capabilities consistent with its strategy.
• For example, a firm pursuing a differentiation strategy would focus on new
product development. A firm focusing on a low cost strategy would focus on
improving manufacturing process efficiency.

• The firm’s most important capabilities are called competencies.

PROF. AGF
RESOURCE BASED THEORY
( JAY BARNEY)

Competencies vs. Core Competencies vs.

Distinctive Competencies
• A competency is an internal capability that a company
performs better than other internal capabilities.
• A core competency is a well-performed internal
capability that is central, not peripheral, to a
company’s strategy, competitiveness, and
profitability.
• A distinctive competence is a competitively valuable
capability that a company performs better than its
rivals.

PROF. AGF
RESOURCE BASED THEORY
( JAY BARNEY)

Competitive Advantage
• A competitive advantage is simply an
advantage you have over your
competitors.
• A competency will produce competitive
advantage provided:
1. it produces value for the organization,
and
2. it does this in a way that cannot easily
be pursued by competitors.

and Capabilities
• Resources: inputs into a firm’s operations so as
to produce goods and services.
• Capabilities: The ability to perform a task or
activity that involves complex patterns of
coordination and cooperation.
• Rents: a surplus of revenue over cost.

Environmental performance
1. In my university, initiatives are taken to implement longterm environmental policies (e.g., UTM sustainability campus policy).
2. In my university, initiatives are taken to implement environmental management systems (such as ISO 14001 or other types of
environmental management systems).
3. Energy conservation practices are promoted in my campus (including reminders for energy savings, turning off computers and lights
when not using.)
4. In my university, initiatives are taken to provide alternative energy (such as solar energy panels).
5. In my university, practices related to reducing water consumption is implemented (Including efficient showerheads and irrigation
systems or rainwater harvesting systems).
6. In my university, recycled products consumptions classified by type (such as using three types of dustbins, i.e., paper, glass, and
plastic).
7. In my university, waste from canteens is collected in food waste collector and properly disposed of (e.g., sustainable arcade campaign,
composting program, etc.).
8. In my university, practices related to reducing the use of private vehicles are implemented (such as bicycling or carfree day, etc.).
9. In my university, practices related to reducing noise for each building are implemented (e.g., no use of vehicle horn on campus).
10. In my university, initiatives are taken to reduce pollution from greenhouse gas emissions (such as green initiatives by UTM campus
sustainability).
11. In my university, non-compliance with environmental laws cause sanctions (e.g., fine on smoking or vaping on campus).
12. In my university, biodiversity is protected from degradation (such as maintaining gardens, protecting animal species, avoid waste
discharge in water bodies, etc.).
13. In my university, activities to promote environmental awareness are arranged (for example energy saving campaigns, conferences,
and community programs).
14. In my university, research projects on environmental topics are conducted (environmental ethics, sustainable energy management,
climate change, etc.).
