Definition of descriptive text

Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing


is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular
person, place, or thing.

Question Words

We use the “wh-” question words to form questions when we want to get information about
someone or something. The questions beginning with ‘wh-’ words are called open questions because
usually there are many possible answers to these questions

Skimming is high-speed reading that can save you lots of time. You
skim to get the general sense of passage of a book.

How do you skim?

You should read only the words that will help you get the sense of the text. The following
passage shows what parts you should read. These are parts that usually give the author’s ideas or
opinions.
Read the first sentences or paragraph quite carefully. The beginning often contains general
information about the rest of the text. If the text is long , you might also read the second paragraph.
Sometimes the first paragraph is only an introduction and the second paragraph contains the main

. Scanning is very high-speed reading. When you
scan, you have a question in mind. You do not
read every word, only the words that answer
your question. Practice in scanning will help you
learn to skip over unimportant words so that you
can read faster

What is a main idea?

The main idea of paragraph is the authors idea about the topic. It is always a complite
sentence that includes both the topic and the idea that the author wishes to express about the
topic.
For example:

TAJ MAHAL

Taj Mahal, an epitome of love, is actually a mausoleum.


Standing majestically on the banks of River Yamuna, the Taj
Mahal is synonymous to love and romance. Taj Mahal was
constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his
beloved wife and queen. The name “Taj Mahal” was derived from
the name of Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal, which means
crown of palaces.

Taj Mahal represents the finest architectural and artistic


achievement. The mausoleum was constructed of pure white
marble. The white marble is inlaid with semi-precious stones
(including jade, crystal, lapis lazuli, amethyst and turquoise) that
form the intricate designs. Its central dome reaches a height of
240 feet (73 meters). The dome is surrounded by four smaller
domes. Four slender towers, or minarets, stand at the corners.
Inside the mausoleum, an octagonal marble chamber adorned
with carvings and semi-precious stones house the false tomb of
Mumtaz Mahal. Her actual remains lie below, at garden level.

the dome of this epic monument, it radiates like a heavenly
pinkish palace. At daytime, when the sky is bright and clear, the
Taj looks milky white. At a moonlit night when the full moon rays

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT (IDENTIFIKASI MASALAH)

TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK

Tanjung Puting National Park is an internationally famous ecotourism


destination, which is located in the southwest of Central Kalimantan
peninsula. Visitors from foreign countries come to this park because of its
amazing nature. This is called a park, but unlike any park that you have
seen in your city, this is a jungle! It is a real jungle, which is home to the
most interesting animal in the world: orangutans.
Though the park is home to many animals, seeing orangutans is
usually the visitors’ main reason to visit the park. Orangutans, which literally
mean the man of the forest, are the largest arboreal animal on the planet.
Most of their lives are spent in trees where orangutans travel from branch to
branch by climbing or swinging with their long arms.
To see orangutans, we should go to Camp Leakey, which is located in
the heart of Tanjung Puting National Park. Camp Leakey is a rehabilitation
place for ex-captive orang utans and also a preservation site. It is also a
famous center for research about orangutans which has been conducted by
the famous primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas since 1971. Here visitors can
see daily feedings to orangutans at jungle platforms as part of the
rehabilitation process to their natural habitat. This event gives them
opportunity to see orangutans up close.
To reach the place, we should take a boat down Sekonyer river. The
boat is popularly called perahu klotok which isa boathouse that can
accommodate four people. The trip by the boat to Camp Leakey takes three
days and two nights. You sleep, cook, and eat in that klotok, night and day
during your journey into the jungle.
The traveling in the boat offers an unforgettable experience. In
daylight, on your way to Camp Leakey, you can see trees filled with proboscis
monkeys, monkeys that have enormous snout which can only be found in
Kalimantan. The monkeys anxiously await klotok arrivals. A troop of 30 light-
brown monkeys may plunge from branches 10 meters or higher into the river
and cross directly in front of the boat. These monkeys know that the boat’s
engine noise and the threat of its propeller scare crocodiles, which find these
chubby monkeys delicious. At night, you can enjoy the clear sky and the

5. VERIFICATION (PEMBUKTIAN)

Borobudur Temple
Borobudur is a Buddhist temple located at Borobudur,
Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The temple is about 100 km in
the west of Semarang, 86 km to the west of Surakarta, and 40 km
in the west of Yogyakarta. The stupa that shaped the temple was
founded by the followers of Mahayana Buddhism’s around the year
of 800 AD on the Sailendra dynasty. Borobudur temple is the
largest Buddhist Temple and also the world’s largest Buddhist
monument.

This monument comprises six terraces with difference


shaped squares on which there are three circular courtyard on the
above, the walls adorned with 2.672 relief panels and there are 504
original Buddha statues. Borobudur has the most complete
collection of Buddhist aid and the largest ones in the world. The
main largest stupa is located n the middle of the building on which
it is also crowned the building surrounded by three rows of circular
72 perforated stupas in which there is buddha statues sitting cross-
legged inside with hands perform lotus hearts perfect position with
mudra (hands shape) Dharmachakra mudra (turning the wheel of
dharma).

6. GENERALIZATION (MENARIK KESIMPULAN)

Tanjung Setia Beach

Lampung is not only famous for its Way Kambas National Park. One of the best tourist
attractions of this province is Tanjung Setia Beach. This beach is located in the village of Tanjung
Setia, West Lampung district, Lampung province. It is about 273 km or about six to seven hour
driving from Bandar Lampung, the capital city of Lampung province.

This beach has not been well known by the citizens of Indonesia yet, but for the world surfers
this beach is a hidden paradise for surfing. This beach is exactly laid on the track of large Indian
Ocean currents that make this beach have waves which are quite perfect for surfing. The perfect wave
of this beach usually lasts from June to August with the height which can reach up to six to seven
meters with a 200 meters length.

In addition to perfect waves for surfing, the beach also has an ambience which is quite natural
with white sand along the beach. Rows of palm tree which grow also adorn this beach. For local
people, the beach area is also an ideal place for fishing. Some fish which are often obtained by the
fisherman are blue marlin which is so big enough that its weight can reach up to 70 kilograms. By
local residents this fish is known by the name of IwaTuhuk.
