ABSTRACT
Introduction: Children with mental retardation depend on other people, related to their
daily activities such as defecating, brushing teeth and wearing clothes that still need help
from others, so it is difficult for children to fulfill their self-care needs so they need to be
taught / trained in the form of guidance. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze
self-care management in mentally retarded children. Method: This review literature uses
searches from proquest, pubmed, google scholar N = 75, journal selection for the last 5
years N = 50, selection of titles and duplicates N = 25, exclude ( n = 25) the problem /
population does not match the topic (n = 3), causal intervention factors (n = 8), outcome
has no relationship with self-care in children with mental retardation (n = 3), study design
sytematic review (n = 3), rivew literature (n = 5), abstract identification N = 18, excluded
(n8), self-care counseling for children with mental retardation (n = 5), with a journal that
can be analyzed N = 10. Conclusion: The results of the study used a Literature Review.
The most effective self-care management in the Literature Review was psychoeducation,
family psychoeducation was considered effective in increasing family knowledge in
caring for children with mental retardation. Family psychoeducation can facilitate
families to explore feelings, understand more specifically about the care and stimulation
of children with mental retardation
