World No. 15 Jonatan stunned world No. 6 Chou with a 21 – 15 victory in the rubber
match. The shuttlers had tied 21-18, 20-22 in the two previous games.
Jojo dominated the first game before losing narrowly to Chou, who rebounded in the
second game. In the third and deciding game, the 20-year-old Indonesia shuttler closed with a
historic win and celebrated his gold medal by taking off his shirt.
Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security
Affairs Minister Wiranto – who also chairs the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) – and
Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek attended the much-anticipated match that attracted viewers
across the nation.
Meanwhile, Indonesia men’s singles shuttler Anthony Ginting shared the bronze medal
with Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto after losing in Monday’s semifinals.
