Activity 1

Make a group of four then read the following article and observe the organization, language
elements and social function of the text!

Why books are important for us?

A wise man once said, “Learning without books means nothing”. In my

opinion, this statement is true. Why do I say that? This is for several reasons.
Firstly, books are crucial in developing the mind and help foster
critical thinking. For example, after reading a book, even if you don’t agree
with some of the points in the book, you might have ideas on how to improve
them.
Secondly, books not only contain stories, but also record facts aand
review histories. You can also learn about a certain period in history by
discovering the popular books of that era. For example, you can learn about
the French Revolutionary era by reading Alexander Duma’s A tale of Two
Cities.
Lastly, books do not only educate but also entertain. There are books
containing mystery, drama, comedy, adventures and so on. There are books
about virtually everything. The possibilities are endless.
Based on the reason above, it is obvious that reading books is important for
us. It is no wonder that books are said to be our “ window tho the world”.

For your information

Analytical Exposition is a text that elaborates the writer‘s idea about the phenomenon
surrounding. Its social function is to persuade the reader that the idea is important matter, and to
analyze the topic that the thesis/opinion is correct by developing an argument to support it.

Generic structure:

#Thesis: Introducing the topic and indicating the writer’s point of view.
# Argument : Explaining the argument to support the writer’s position. The number of arguments
may vary, but each argument must be supported by evidence and explanation.
# Reiteration: Restating the writer’s point of view / to strengthen the thesis. We can use the
following phrase to make conclusion in reiteration

Language features:

– Using relational process

– Using internal conjunction
– Using causal conjunction
– Using Simple Present Tense
– Using compound and complex sentence.
– Use word that link argument, such as firstly, secondly, and reasoning through causal
conjunction, such as in addition, furthermore, however, therefore.

Activity 4
Read the following text then answer the questions!

Fast Food
Fast food nowadays is considered a normal eating venture. People are not just eating
out on special occasions or weekends anymore. It means that all the time they mostly eat fast
foods. However is fast food good for health?
Fast food has its popularity in the 1940’s. Within a few years, fast-food operations
popped up everywhere. With the compelling rise in fast-food restaurants since the 1940’s, oddly
it started the rise in obesity and cancer during that same time period.
Fast food is highly processed with a wide array of additives. To ensure fast food’s low
cost, the fast food products are made with highly-processed ingredients to give it shelf-life, to
hold consistency, and to enhance flavor. Fast food is altered from its original healthy form.
It is not the calories in fast food which damage health and waistline. It is the chemical
additives such as aspartame and MSG (monosodium glutamate). Studies show that the chemical
additives lead to weight and disease issues.

So, there is absolutely nothing nutritional about fast food. Fast food simply feeds hunger
and craving.

Is Smoking Good for Us?

Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look at the fact. Smoking is not a good habit for
many reasons. Here are the facts that we can learn.
About 50 thousands people die every year in Britain as direct result of smoking. This is seven
times as many as die in road accidents. Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases
caused by smoking. Ninety percent of cancers are caused by smoking. If we smoke five cigarettes
a day, we are six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non smoker. If we smoke twenty
cigarettes a day, the risk is nineteen greater. Ninety five percent of people who suffer of
bronchitis are people who are smoking. Smokers are two and half times more likely to die of
heart disease than non smokers.
Additionally, children of smoker are more likely to develop bronchitis and pneumonia. In one
hour in smoky room, non smoker breathes as much as substance causing cancer as if he had
smoked fifteen cigarettes. The passive smokers clearly get dangerous risk which influence their
health.
As a conclusion, smoking is not good for everyone, not only for the smokers themselves but
also for the people around smokers.

1) Carpeting may initially be less expensive than installing hardwood floors. While

carpeting may look fantastic when it is first laid, in a relatively short period of
time, it can become badly soiled. If the carpet is not cleaned regularly, these
stains can permanently mar its beauty. Once this happens, the only recourse is
to replace the stained carpet with a new one. In the end, then, hardwood
flooring is a better buy than carpeting.

“job-shadow”, in which you spend a day with a person who is working in a field that
interests you. These are just a few helpful ideas as you begin to choose a career.
