1. Social function:
a. to ask and give directions to other person or people
b. to help someone who needs any directions
2. Generic structure:
a. Asking for directions; use polite question when asking for directions. It’s better to start with
‘excuse me’ as a polite way of trying to get someone’s attention when you ask for
directions.
Examples:
- Excuse me…
- Where can I find…?
- How do I get to…?
- Can you give me direction to…?
- Can you tell me how to get to…?
- Is there a/an… near here?
- What’s the best way to…?
b. Giving directions; should be given using the imperative form in order to list the directions
such as: ‘take a left, go straight on, etc.’
Examples:
- Go straight on…
- Turn back/ go back
- Turn left/ right into…
- It is on the left/ right into…
- Follow this sign/ road for…
- In front of…
- Next to…
3. Language features
a. Preposition of directions
- To; is used to indicate movement or an action or condition suggesting movement in the
direction of place, person, or thing.
Examples: I go to school by bike
- Across; is a movement from one side to other side
Examples: they must walk across the river every day
- Along; is used to direct someone in a constant movement
Examples: the street runs along the seafront.
- Around; is every side of path or along curving path
Examples: you must walk around the park
- Down; is used to indicate movement from a higher to a lower position
Examples: they are walking down the city
- Into; is used to show toward to inside or enter to a place
Examples: you should come into manager’s room
- Onto; indicates moving to a position that is on
Examples: the cat got onto the bed
- Off; means away from
Examples: get your feet off the sofa!
- Over; is used to show an upward and forward direction across something
Examples: the peasant must cross over the yard
- Past; is used to indicate the far side of something
Examples: go past the music room and they are there
- Through; is used to show movement within an enclosed place
Examples: all children walk through the underpass
- Toward(s); means in direction of something
Examples: Katy runs toward the front door
- Up; is used to show a movement or an action from a lower to a higher position
Examples: My son climbs up the chair

Sebelum anda mulai, siapkan terlebih dahulu sebuah benda yang ada di kelas anda. Benda
itu bisa berupa vas bunga, spidol, atau benda-benda yang lainnya. Satu lagi, sebuah sapu
tangan atau kain untuk menutup mata.
Nah, kalau sudah siap, maka mintalah salah satu siswa dari grup pertama untuk maju ke
depan kelas. Kemudian, tutuplah matanya. Setelah itu, ambillah salah satu benda dan
sembunyikan benda tersebut di sekitar kelas. Setelah disembunyikan, semua anggota
grupnya harus memberikan petunjuk ke arah benda tersebut disembunyikan.
Petunjuk itu misalnya: "Go straight", "Go forward for three steps", "Turn right", "Turn left", "Go
back", dan akhirnya beritahulah dimana benda itu berada dengan menggunakan
"Preposition". Misalnya : "The vase is under the table", dsb.
