• Some belief, statement or action involves the

Hermeneutics of Apology

that belief, statement or action in some fashion
that will demonstrate that x is true.
• In other words, we seek to construct an apology
for the truth that we think underlies the belief,
statement or action.
Hermeneutics of Recovery
• Some belief, statement or action involves the
assertion of x.
• Since we do not know whether x is true or false,
we must explain that belief, statement or action
in some fashion that neither assumes nor denies
the truth of x.
• In other words, we seek to “recover” the
tradition’s own understanding by restating that
belief, statement or action in our own terms.
