Phrasal verb adalah frasa yang terdiri dari verb standard dan satu atau dua particle.

Verb standar tersebut seperti go, make, take. Sedangkan untuk particle (s) yang digunakan
dapat berupa adverb dan atau preposisi. Biasanya phrasal verb sering digunakan dalam
dialog sehari-hari native speaker dan tulisan bahasa Inggris yang tidak formal.

Contoh phrasal verb adalah, go away, make up, take off, stand up for, call on, dan lain-lain.

Phrasal verbs dapat menjadi transitive atau intransitive:

- Transitive phrasal verbs memiliki direct object;

- Intransitive phrasal verbs tidak memiliki a direct object.

BEBERAPA CONTOH TRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS DENGAN OBJECT

• Set up (organize, configure): I’ve set up a reminder in my agenda schedule.

(set up = phrasal verb, object = ‘my agenda schedule’)

• Give up (finish, stop a habit): She gave up eating junk food three years ago.

(give up = phrasal verb, object = ‘eating’)

• Put off (postpone, move to a later time): We’ve put off the reunion for a week.

(put off = phrasal verb, object = ‘the reunion’)

TRANSITIVE DAN INTRANSITIVE

Phrasal verbs dapat menjadi keduanya yaitu transitive and intransitive, seperti kita dapat
melihat dalam verb ‘look up’:

• Look up ( = ‘get better, improve’) – intransitive:

After a horrible year last year things are starting to look up.

(look up = ‘get better, improve’)

Kata kerja look up dengan artinya adalah intransitive. Kata kerja tersebut tidak memiliki object.
 • Look up ( = ‘look in the dictionary for a word’) – transitive:

I always look up words I don’t know.

(look up = ‘look in the dictionary for a word’)
