Deskripsi Mata Kuliah This course deals with the study of language from the users’ point of view,
especially of the choices they make, the constraints they encounter in using
language in social interaction and the effect their use of the language has on the
other participants in an act of communication. The field of this study is between
semantics, sociolinguistics, and extra-linguistics context. Topics to discuss include
Meaning and Context, Reference and Inference, Presupposition and Entailment,
Deixis, Cooperation and Implicature, Speech Acts and Events, Politeness and
Interaction, and Discourse and Culture. The assessment on students’ learning
progress is based on students’ weekly contribution to the class discussion,
individual and group assignments, the mid semester and the final tests.
