This study was concerning in the determination of the levels of caffeine contained in tea packed in
sachets or bags in the market under the brand A, B, and C. Research was done by using TLC-
densitometry performed by measuring the area of the stain spot on TLC chromatogram of the test
compound that has been isolated and compared with standard caffeine compound. Measurement was done
by using Camag’s ® TLC scanner 4. From the results, we obtained the levels of caffeine in tea sample
preparation of brands A, B, and C were equal to 0.840% (16.42 mg/ sachet), 0.647% (14.06 mg/ sachet),
and 0.690% (13.837 mg / sachet) respectively. Daily caffeine intake (3 times daily) of each successive
product A, B, and C were 49.26 mg/ day, 42.18 mg/ day and 41.51 mg/ day respectively, which means
does not exceed the limit of BPOM RI caffeine requirement, that is 150 mg/ day.
