Hello, Alia! Let me introduce myself. My name is Hannah.

I know your name from my friend, Caroline. She told me that you sent her an email telling her
that you would like to have more pen pals from the US. I’d really like to be your E-pal. You sound
really cool!
I guess I’d better tell you something about myself first. I’m 16 years old and I attend Thomas
Edison High School here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I have two brothers and two half sisters
and I’m the middle child. My father died a few years ago so my mother runs the house and the
family business. My father was a barista.
I have lots of hobbies. I like music – mostly classical music and folk music – but I don’t play
an instrument. I like sports, especially tennis and basketball. At school I’m in the basketball team
and I spend most of my extra-curricular time playing basket ball. I’m into animals very much. My
sister and I have three dogs, a rabbit and an iguana. They need lots of attention as you can
imagine. At school, I have many Hmong friends who were not fully fluent in English. Their family
moved here from Asia. I enjoy talking to them about our different cultures. My favorite subjects at
school are art and geography. I think I’d like to become a park ranger when I graduate, perhaps
work for the National Parks Service.
I haven’t got much interest in fashion, although we have ‘Mall of America,’ the biggest mall in
Minnesota. We can reach the mall very easily. A commuter train runs every 15 minutes, buses also
come from different directions. We can also drive to the mall. It’s much faster than going there by
train or by bus.
I don’t like reading but I love drawing and painting.
How about you? Please drop me a line, Alia! Can’t wait to hear from you!

Here is a story of an American boy, George. He is the middle child in the family and he

KID IN THE MIDDLE

I don't like being the middle kid. If I do something to my brother or sister I get into trouble. If
they do something to me, I still get into trouble. I don't like it. I am in the middle of everything.
Let me give you an example. Sometimes my sister hits me. Then I
hit her back. When I hit her back, mum sees me and says, "Don't
hit your younger sister". And I say, "But she hit me first", and she
says, "Well, if she hits you again, come and tell me".

UKBM ING-3.1/4.1/1/1-1 Page 14

So the next day she hits me and I tell mum and she says, "Oh, come on, you are too old to tell
tales. She is just a little kid". What can I do? My elder brother hits me too and he never gets
into trouble. My dad sometimes says, "All right, what do you want me to do?" And I say, "Tell
him to stop". So he just says, "Don't do that again". But next day he hits me again and what
can I do?
The middle kid always gets into trouble.

I think being the middle kid is not easy because :

I always get in trouble because of my little brother and sister . they

always do problems like hitting me but if I reply I also get into trouble
, even though my father rebuked my brother , my brother still did the
same thing with me . mom think’s I;m wrong and always wrong.

     Hi, how are you?.

My name is Craig and I´m ten years old.

I am English because I was born in England, but I am also British because England is part of Great Britain
and is in the UK.

I live in a typical English family. I have a father, mother and a sister and we all live together in our house
in a town in the south east corner of England. At the back of our house we have our garden where I play with
my sister.

My family has a car, a computer, a colour telly with dvd, a washing machine, dishwasher and a cat. Mum
and dad both have mobile phones and I am hoping to get one soon.

The day starts at about 7 o'clock when Dad and mum get up. My sister and I usually watch telly in our
pyjamas (night clothes) until breakfast. We have breakfast at 8 o' clock.

I like to eat Rice Krispies (cereal) and jam on toast. I also drink a glass of milk. My mum usually only has
toast, a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee. Dad likes to have a fried breakfast consisting of baked
beans, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, two eggs and a sausage

After breakfast, my sister and I, put on our school uniform. I wear grey trousers, a white shirt and a blue
sweat shirt.

My favourite subjects at school are science and history. My favourite topic in history is learning about the
ancient Egyptians. I also enjoy PE  lessons - we play football, netball, cricket and sometimes we go cross-

What about you?

MY BIOGRAPHY

after Mark Twain

I was born on the 30-th of November 1835 in the village of Florida, Missouri. My father was John
Marshal Clemens.

According to tradition some of my great-great parents were pirates and slave traders — a
respectable trade in the 16-th century. In my time I wished to be a pirate myself.

Florida contained a hundred people and when I was born I increased the population by one per
cent. It had two streets and a lot of lanes. Both the streets and the lanes were paved with the
same material — black mud in wet times, deep dust in dry. Most of the houses were of wood —
there were none of brick and none of stone. Everywhere around were fields and woods.

My uncle was a farmer. I have never met a better man than he was. He was a middle-aged man
whose head was clear and whose heart was honest and simple. I stayed at his house for three
months every year till I was thirteen years old. Nowhere else was I happier than at his house. He
had eight children and owned about fourteen Negro slaves whom he had bought from other
farmers. My uncle and everyone on the farm treated the slaves kindly. All the Negroes on the farm
were friends of ours and with those of our own age we were playmates. Since my childhood I have
learned to like the black race and admire some of its fine qualities. In my school days nobody told
me that it was wrong to sell and buy people. It is only much later that I realized all the horror of

slavery.

The country school was three miles from my uncle's farm. It stood in a forest and could take in
about twenty five boys and girls. We attended school once or twice a week. I was a sickly child and
lived mainly on medicine the first seven years of my life.

When I was twelve years old my father died. After my father's death our family was left penniless. I
was taken from school at once and placed in the office of a local newspaper as printer's apprentice
where I could receive board and clothes but no money.

For ten years I worked in print shops of various cities. I started my journalistic life as a reporter on
a newspaper in San-Francisco. It was then that I began to sign my publications by my penname
Mark Twain.
