ABSTRACT
Introduction : Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is an infectious disease caused
by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). CD4+ T lymphocytes are the main
cellular target of HIV because these cells form an important part of the human immune system.
The number of CD4+ T cells has an important role in the treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS.
The purpose of the literature review is to determine the effect of traditional medicine
(TCM) to increase the number of CD4+ T cells in HIV/AIDS patients. Method: The method
used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which is a literature study that is arranged
systematically and clearly by identifying, collecting and evaluating existing research data. From
the search process through the pubmed database search engine, 4 research journals were found
that matched the theme of literature review. The population is people with HIV/AIDS. Results:
Based on 4 studies, it was found that the use of TCM for antiretroviral therapy could maintain
CD4+ values in HIV/AIDS patients, thereby minimizing life expectancy in HIV/AIDS sufferers.
Discussion: efforts have been made by HIV/AIDS sufferers to maintain their quality of life as
much as possible, including the use of traditional therapy for ARV therapy assistance to
maintain body resistance. Some side effects of ARV treatment such as nausea can be minimized
with traditional herbs. Traditional medicine has been recognized for its benefits from generation
to generation, but to make traditional medicine as main medicine needs further study. Currently,
studies and research on traditional medicine are still very limited, therefore it is necessary to
encourage research related to traditional medicine.
