Descriptive Text
a. Definition
According to Alawi (2001: 1) has similar opinion about
descriptive text. He adds that “descriptive is the text picturing the
person, place and thing with clear detail to help the readers look
an object which is described”.
Descriptive text is a text that gives information about
particular person, place, or thing. Gerot et al in Mursyid states that
descriptive text is a kind of text with a purpose to give information.
The context of this kind of text is the description of particularthing,
animal, person, or others.”

Relating to the quotation, through this text, the readers can
imagine what being talked about.
b. Social Function
To give information about a particular
entity by describing its features, history,
and special characteristics.
To give information about things by describing
physical attributes, behaviors, uses,etc.
c. Generic structure
According to Gerot and Wignell (1994: 208) add that there
are two generic structures of descriptive text; namely,
identification and description. In identification, the
learners will identify phenomenon or subject that is going to
be described. While, description, the learners will describe
specifically parts, qualities, and characteristics of an object
that is being described.
The generic structure of descriptive text consists of
identification and description. Identification is about
introducing subject or thing that will be described, whereas,
description is brief details about who, or what of the subject.

My Fat Cat
I have a fat cat in my house. I called him Pusy because it is so chubby. It’s a female
cat. I found him on the street nearby a years ago when she was a kitten.

Now Pusy has grown to be an adult cat. She has a big and fat body. Her fur is
basically white with some random black and brown spots all over her body. Her eyes
are yellow and a bit dark. Her nose and the part of her inside ears are light pink.
Pusy likes most of all food I give to her. She eats raw and cooked meat, fish, bone,
salty dried fish, and even rice. I feed her about two or three times for a single day.
She rarely catches her prey because his fat body. I love to pet his chubby cheek and
body; it’s as soft as a pillow.
Embem is quite an active cat. She usually walks around nearby my neighbourhood.
She also likes to take a nap in front of my house or on the sofa. (Description)

My father is Mr. Marzuki. He is very warm, smart, dan funny
person. I live with him in Prambon, Nganjuk. (Identification)
My father is quite handsome man. Now, he is about 35 years
old. He has well-built body because he always does exercise
every day. He is also tall. He has short black hair and black
eyes. He has an oval face and pointed chin. He has slight
moustaches and beard. He has slight dark brown skin.
My father is a junior high school teacher. He teaches sports.
He always goes to school in early morning and comes home in
the afternoon around 03.00 pm. He works hard for his family.
We all love him so much. He is the best father in the world to me.
