ABSTRACT
Reading a literary work is an interesting activity, but it is not the only value a reader
may have. Reading is also an experience of learning. A literary work that has a
valuable significance to learn is novel. In addition to the story that may entertain,
a novel gives the reader things to learn. Starting from getting interested in the
language, a reader can see deeper and deeper social case. John Steinbeck and V. S.
Naipaul have written for the world to have amusement and knowledge. With the
standard and nonstandard English that they use, they bring a reader to see the
classes of people in certain places.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION
A literary work is not only a book of beautiful words, but also a book of history and
knowledge. A reader can feel amused when reading a literary work. Also, he can
find good things to know in the work. An author of a literary work tells a story of
his imagination and expression, and at the same time he records what happens at
the time he writes the story.
166
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 166-177
Reading a literary work makes a reader look at the intrinsic and extrinsic elements
of the work. When focusing on the intrinsic nature of a literary work, a reader can
see the setting, character, plot, language, etc. The intrinsic elements really influence
the quality of the work.
A kind of literary work that is called an extended fictional work is novel. It presents
the intrinsic elements with greater breadth and freedom according to Gold Prentice
Hall Literature (GPHL). It has richer things to understand including its conflicts.
William Styron has written, “A great book should leave you with many experiences,
and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it” (GPHL).
Readers will have a wealth of experience and understanding.
Some novels are well known for the intrinsic elements of the work such as Jonathan
Swift’s Gulliver’s Travel for the plot and characters, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick
for the setting of place, and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men for the style of the
language used.
An intrinsic element of a novel that is precious to see is the language used by author.
It may reflect the interest of the author. The language is also to articulate the
purposes of the characters in the story. It is a significant medium of thought in the
work.
In addition to learning the intrinsic elements of a work, a reader can employ his or
her subjectivity to see the work. A reader brings to the text his or her past experience
and present personality (Rosenblatt in Bressler, 1999). It illustrates that a reader
cannot leave his or her subjectivity when reading a text. The text will be read in a
very specific way and given a comment in a very scientific technique. Again, the
technique that is used by a certain reader depends on his or her subjectivity.
The subjectivity makes him or her use a school of thought or criticism. It will
support the ideas or opinions coming from the subjectivity. Then a school of
criticism is founded by people who declare allegiance to a similar thought. The
similar thought makes the people call the same name.
Literature has been, for a long time, defined as works of the imagination or creative
writing (Bressler 1999). The imagination and creative nature of literature need a
creative thinking. The creative thinking will bear the art nature of literary works.
Again the works will be read and learned through a particular way of criticism.
A reader who believes that social and historical concerns must be highlighted in a
text is known as a Marxist reader (Bressler 1999). A reader who likes to see the
psychological concerns in the text will use psychoanalytical points of view. A
reader who is happy and kind to see women’s struggle in the text is called a feminist.
However, the response again concentrates on his or her personal reaction.
When some readers read Steinbeck’s of Mice and Men, they will develop different
ways of reading. One reader will see how some workers work very hard with low
167
Suryo Sudiro
Lower and higher English in novels
payment in his or her Marxist point of view. He or she will underline how people
of a low class struggle to survive to get more property of the haves. The detail of
reading will tell us about how hard life is to them. The life struggle has a lot of
stories to tell.
Another reader will see how some women have a different class in society than the
workers in his or her feminist point of view. The women in the novel somehow
belong to a particular class but they are used and exploited by the low class workers.
The feminists will try to fight to show how Steinbeck illustrates the lower positions
of women. Even, they are actually lower than the low paid workers.
Other readers will perhaps use psychoanalysis to talk about the though relationship
between two characters in the novel. One character is so smart to protect one
character who is idiot. They have a special relationship although finally the smart
one must kill the idiot. The reader will explain it detail psychological condition
even a moment before the idiot dies.
Novels can become good and valuable books to learn. The intrinsic elements
become things to discuss. It can also become a book of life issues to talk about in
many places. Readers can focus on the literary elements of novels, or on the issues
brought by the author in the work. Readers even use the works to do and get both.
Sharing the ideas found in literary works means using valuable things to present
precious things to others to know and do. It needs creativity and development of
thought. The creativity includes how to get valuable theories and references. The
theories and references also show how a reader develops their reading materials.
One of many good references is a book of criticism.
A reader may have his or her audience see the setting, characters, tone, style, etc.
The audience will present their reading and show how they understand the work by
detailing the literary elements. It is a good activity of reading. The audience can
understand the meaning of the words in a novel and show how the words support
the work.
In addition, a novel can provide the readers and audience with life issues. When
using the work this way, the forum can become a reading forum and a writing forum.
Firstly, the reader gives a set time to his or her audience to read and understand the
work. Then, the audience writes how they understand the work. They can use a
specific critical theory to analyze the novel.
However, the important step to take before using a novel to share is to understand
the literary theory. From the literary theory a reader can have a basic understanding
of literature and how to share the ideas to others.
A literary theory may help a reader find the relationship between an author and his
work. It also develops the significance of race, class, and gender. It can start from
168
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 166-177
the author. It can also be seen based on the historical context. With a literary theory
a reader can develop his ideas and methods to see the text that he is reading. A
literary theory is also considered a principle or tool which can be used to understand
literature.
The analysis may vary. It possibly focuses on the linguistic relevance, the intrinsic
elements, or the power of the work will influences the life of those who have read
the work. It may also combine some focuses. It makes writing about a literary work
and making a literary analysis challenging.
Chris Baldick (1996) concluded that from the 1890s to the 1990s the study of
literary theory underwent many changes. He said that, from 1890 to 1918, it dealt
with the descent from decadent estheticism to treating concepts like omniscience,
modernism, and realism.
He also concluded that the period of 1918 to 1945 marked the beginning of the
modernist revolution with the wave of New Criticism started by T. S. Eliot. From
1945 to 1968, the examination of various literary tendencies and alternatives to New
Criticism emerged as a popular way to study literary theory. Then, from 1968 to the
1990s, literary theory dealt with the implications of textual politics.
The language is used by the authors for some purposes. Rather than merely
becoming a medium of expression, language may become an expression to show a
specific difference. One phenomenon that is seen in some novels is that the author
tries to show that the language may distinguish a speaker or character from the other
characters.
Rather than arguing that meaning can be generated through language, post-
structuralists argue that meanings are fluid and subject to constant “slippage” or
“spillage” (Bary, 1995). It means that meaning is not certain and is always
contaminated by their opposites. Derrida stated that meaning is not the basis of
language but as an effect of the language (Landry, 2000). The meaning of what is
169
Suryo Sudiro
Lower and higher English in novels
articulated with language in a text is not only seen as something produced by the
readers and by language itself. Then, the text may have free meanings.
On the other hand, Jonathan Culler (1997) sees literature as a speech act or textual
event that elicits certain kinds of attention. It contrasts with other sorts of speech
acts, such as imparting information, asking questions, or making promises. A
literary work such as a novel moves readers from text an imagined world, a world
that the readers judges in terms of his or her own experience of the real world. The
illusion is created by language of the author for the reader.
Moreover Culler (1997) said that ‘literariness’ is often said to lie above all in the
organization of language that makes literature distinguishable from language used
for other purposes. Literature is language that ‘foregrounds’ language itself, makes
it strange, thrust it at you – ‘Look! I’m language!’- so you can’t forget that you are
dealing with language shaped in odd ways. In particular, poetry organizes the sound
plane of language so as to make it something to reckon with.
On the other hand, Wordsworth said, “but Poets do not write for Poets alone, but
for men” (in Attridge, 2004). The language in literary works is not only for the
authors but also for the readers. Wordsworth went on challenging, “if literature is a
distinctive use of language with its own very special and unusual codes and
practices, it is accessible only to the few who are in a position to acquire familiarity
with those codes and practices” (in Attridge, 2004). Literature does not need to be
elitist. It must be accessible for everyone who likes to read. The more reader it has,
the more social function it exercises.
Historically speaking, standard English is the model for educated written usage
throughout the British isles and even beyond, and it is that variety which is the basis
of modern grammar of English (Wales, 2001). It is English variation that is
dominantly used. It has a uniform spelling system. It is regarded as serving as a
model for various functions and having a special social status and prestige.
170
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 166-177
One of the standard varieties that are used by schools and other formal institutions
in the world is Standard American English. In some cases, it is considered powerful.
It has been used to show individual and institutional power. It has bigger access to
power since it is regarded as the characteristics of people who possess social power
and control (Kovecses, 2000).
The standard language is considered to have a social power. For sure, the ones who
have the social power are the speaker. The social power makes them able to
standardize the language form in society. The predominantly characteristics of
those who possess it are people on top of socioeconomic hierarchy and people who
come from major industrial areas. The other predominantly characteristics are
males, mostly whites, middle aged or upper middle aged, college or university
educated. However in the progress some Afro-Americans in the United States speak
the standard variety of American English (Kovecses, 2000).
The term non-standard that is also called as vernacular, is often evaluated negatively
against the norm of standard “hegemonic” dialect (Wales, 2001). It is considered a
dialect that is opposed to the standard.
171
Suryo Sudiro
Lower and higher English in novels
The contraction ain’t is also a typical vernacular English. It can mean be+not or
have+not. The sentence He ain’t no buddy of mine means he isn’t a friend of mine.
The sentence I ain’t got no money means I don’t have any money, and the sentence
I ain’t done it yet means I haven’t done it yet (Kovecses, 2008).
Subject and verb often do not agree in vernacular English. The contraction don’t
can occur with a third person singular subject, as in he don’t love her. On the other
hand, plural subjects are often not followed by the plural of be as they was pretty
hungry (Kovecses, 2008).
The pronoun them can be used in a demonstrative function. What this means is that
them can replace the standard demonstrative pronoun those, so the sentence give
me them things means the same as give me those things. Also, the standard
demonstrative pronoun this can be reinforced by the deictic place adverb here like
in this here man wants something (Kovecses, 2000).
Subject relative pronoun is often missing in defining relative clause as in the fellow
wrote that letter is here. The standard version is the fellow who wrote that letter is
here. In vernacular American English, the relative pronoun who or that can be used
to refer to the subject of the main clause can be left out (Kovecses, 2000).
172
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 166-177
In vernacular American English, the simple past tense can be expressed by verb
forms that are considered past participle form in the standard. The verb done and
seen, for example, can be used to indicate simple past tense like in He done it and
John seen ‘em. Regularized forms are used for the same purpose, as in She knowed
it (instead of knew), and also come for came and drownded for drowned (Kovecses,
2000).
Standard irregular past tense forms are also used for past participle like took, went,
tore, fell, and wrote. Instead of saying He had gone home in standard, in vernacular
the speaker says he had went home (Kovecses, 2000).
In vernacular English, we find possessive pronouns mine, yourn, hisn, hern, ourn,
and theirn. Also, we find reflexive pronouns myself, yourself, hisself, herself,
ourself, and theirself (Kovecses, 2000).
A vernacular dialect may contrast with the standard one (Poedjosoedarmo, 2000).
To identify the differentiating features of standard and vernacular forms, we need
to contrast an item considered standard to other items considered vernacular. In the
case of sentence particle, it may be contrasted to other sentence particles that occupy
a similar slot in the sentence, or a different slot in the same sentence (Mohd. Taha
in Poedjosoedarmo, 2000). We may contrast an item with another item which
resemble each other in their forms and also in their meanings.
Many literary authors use standard English. The following are some words quoted
from well-known novels:
“In consideration of the hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse and by
some sage women in the neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me
several months before there was any possibility of our becoming personally
acquainted …”(David Copperfield, Charles Dickens).
“The shop was small and so was the house. It was one of those grimy brick
houses which existed in large quantities before the era of reconstruction
dawned upon London…”(The Secret Agent, Joseph Conrad)
“When I first met Elliot, I was just a young author like another and he took no
notice of me. He never forgot a face and when I ran across him here or there
he shook hand with me cordially, but showed no desire to further our
acquaintance …(The Razor’s Edge, W Somerset Maugham)
“My good boy! The director wheeled sharply round on him.’ Can’t you see?
Can’t you see?’ He raised a hand; his expression was solemn. ‘Bokanovsky’s
process is one of the major instruments of social stability!” (Brave New World,
Aldous Huxley)

Lower and higher English in novels
The words show us how the authors could speak English very well and also show
that the authors were really careful to use English. V. S. Naipaul in his novel,
Miguel Street described a poet with his words; “His English was so good. It did not
sound natural, and I looked my mother worried” and “He spoke very slowly and
very correctly, as though every word was costing him money”.
In addition, readers may also find nonstandard English in literary works. The
varieties are written by authors who speak and understand English well. The
following are two examples of nonstandard English cited from two novels written
by John Steinbeck;
“Tried and tried,” said Lennie, but “’It didn’t do no good. I remember about
the rabbits, George.”
The hell with the rabbits. That’s all you ever can remember is them rabbits.
O. K.! Now you listen and this time you got to remember so we don’t get in
no trouble… (Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck)
The words cited from Of Mice and Men show that multiple negative form is used
but it means positive, the verb should be work, and the adverb should be well, then
in Standard English it should be it didn’t work well.
In addition to using multiple negative forms, Of Mice and Men has some more
expressions to read such as:
The other lower English phenomena that we can learn are the sentences written by
V. S. Naipaul in Miguel Street such as:
“The boy gone and pass the Cambridge Senior School Cetificate” (Miguel
Street, V. S. Naipaul)
The sentence should be a past tense or a simple present perfect tense. It should the
boy went and passed the Cambridge Senior School Certificate or the boy has gone
and passed the Cambridge Senior School Certificate.
In addition to using multiple negative form, Miguel Street some more expressions
to read such as
a. “is not my fault really, is just Trinidad”, that is to say “It is not really my
fault, but it is just Trinidad’s”.
b. “Everybody want to beat me”, that is to say “Everybody wants to beat me”.
174
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 166-177
Before going too far, we need to see what Marxism looks upon language especially
in literary works, we need to learn what Moyra Haslett writes. She writes that
language or the word is both social sign and the medium of consciousness (2000).
The standard and nonstandard words used in Of Mice and Men and Miguel Street
occur to become a social sign that there is a social evidence that shows differences
in the relationship of characters in the novel. The both levels of language also
become a medium of consciousness for them in their life.
Language is also the site of class struggle (Moyra, 2000). The characters in both
novels show how they exist in the classes. They show their existence with language.
The authors critically and smartly use the two classes of language to show the
difference of the characters.
They had walked in single file down on the path, and even in the open one,
stayed behind the other. Both were dressed in denim trousers and in denim
coats, with brass button. Both wore black, shapeless hats, and both carried
tight blanket rolls slung over their shoulders.
This man was born to be an active and important member of a local road board
in the country. An unkind fate had placed him the city. He was a natural guide,
philosopher and friend to anyone who stopped to listen.
“the writer’s first duty was to set down his time as healthy as he can
understand it and serve as “the watch dog of society”, “to satirize its silliness”,
“to attack its injustices”, and to stigmatize its faults” (in McMichael, 1980).
He is trying to tell us that his novel reflect what really happens, the people, the job,
the poorness and of course the language. What he likes to say with the standard and
nonstandard English is that the varieties represent the conflict of interest of two
175
Suryo Sudiro
Lower and higher English in novels
classes of people in a society. The ones with standard English are the higher level
and the ones with nonstandard English are the lower level.
The higher level people are the holders of economic and cultural power. They rule
the lower people. They shape the consciousness that they are higher. They speak
higher level language. They feel that they are different from the lower level people
who speak lower level English. With the standard English, they create a hegemony.
In Marxist point of view, Naipaul seems like to show they people are lower and
oppressed by a hegemony and an ideology that are made by people who speak
standard English. The condition is a kind of pressure for the characters to feel lower.
It is then represented in detail through the lower English that they like to choose.
With the inferiority in Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck shows a life which is ruled
by higher social class.
What we can read in V. S. Naipaul’s Miguel Street is not absolutely the same as
what we can find in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In Miguel Street almost all
characters use nonstandard English. However, we cannot say that they cannot use
the standard one. For example, Edward mostly uses nonstandard such as:
“I think he kill she, you know. Boyee tell me that the evening before she dead
he hear George giving the woman licks like a fire”.
“It is the truth, but you can’t plead guilty. You have to make up some new
story”.
It occurs that Naipaul wants to say that the characters in his novel realize that
they are lower class people. They speak to people in the neighborhood with
nonstandard English since they are lower. However, when they want to be called
higher or even when they talk about higher condition, they use the standard one.
CONCLUSION
A literary work is not only to amuse the readers but only to give knowledge. The
words are not only beautiful but also functional. Reading the work is not only killing
time but also giving values.
A novel can become a story to tell us the conflicts of life. The conflicts can be
expressed with the language. The language is able to show that a condition is
different from the other condition, and that a person is not the same as the other.
The authors may use standard and nonstandard language to show that the characters
have different classes. The ones using standard language are considered higher that
the ones using the nonstandard.

JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 166-177
Of Mice and Men and Miguel Street are two novels which are rich of conflicts. The
authors, John Steinbeck and V. S. Naipaul, critically and smartly use standard and
nonstandard English to tell the conflicts and classes of the characters.

INTRODUCTION
Languages are used to carry on arguments, to convey information from one person
to another, to entertain; in short, to communicate. The information transferred
within the process of communication (either spoken or written) is expressed not
only explicitly, but people also use symbols, lexical means, gestures, mimics, voice
quality, pitch range and other signals. All of these signals assist the addressee to
receive and understand the intended message better. As well as a psychologist who
can analyze the meaning of the particular gesture, a linguist is able to analyze the
178

text, written or spoken, according to different levels. This study is called discourse
analysis.
Van Dijk (1998) proposed that discourse is a complex unit of language form, meaning,
and action that might best be captured under the notion of a communicative event
or communicative act. Brown and Yule (1983) suggest a simpler definition into the
following: “The analysis of discourse is, necessarily, the analysis of language in
use”. Thus, discourse can be concluded as a study of the language in relation to its
function within social communication.
Within these days, advertisement has become part of our lives. Either we realise it or
not, it turns into one of the communication tools, which influences our attitudes
towards products, brand names, companies, lifestyles, or even public issues. We
will easily find advertisements through some common media namely newspaper,
magazine, radio, television, internet, billboards, and many other places.
Percy (2005) denotes the word advertisement as “turning people towards a product or
service by providing positive feeling information that goes well beyond simply
calling people attention to it”. However, as the time goes by, there are various
purposes on why advertisement is created. Not only to promote commercial goods
and services, this advertising can be used to inform, educate and motivate the public
that is known as non-commercial advertisement.

ADVERTISEMENT STRUCTURE
Leech (1966) stated that generally every advertisement – especially the printed one-
consists of these components:
1. Headline, is the head / the opening of an advertisement whose function
is as an eye catcher or attention gatherer.
2. Illustration, is the background of the advertisement.
3. Body Copy is the body / content of the advertisement which provides the
information and message of the advertisement.

SEMIOTICS
Semiotics is a study of sign including its role in social life. Apparently, sign is a
stimulus which is accepted by our brain to be produced which then create a response
in the form of a realistic concept. Therefore, semiotics learns about all kinds of
relation between sign with its real representation and the relation between its users
in the social society life. The relation between sign and its real representations is
known as the relation between signifier (sign) and signified (meaning).
Associated with the signifier and signified, there are many theories put forward by
linguists with various terms and expressions. This article applies two semiotic
theories, proposed by Ferdinand de Saussure and Orgel & Richards.
Ferdinand de Saussure (Saussure, pg. 2-3) explains that language is a
communication system that involves concept and sound image, where the sound
image is a signifier and a concept is a signified. Saussure states further:
... The bond between the signifier and the signified is arbitrary, there is
nothing in either the word or the thing that makes the two go together, no
natural, intrinsic or logical relation between a particular sound image and
a concept; ...
In contrast with Saussure, Ogden & Richards (1923) add a connector element
between signifier and signified called thought or reference. The relationship
between these three triangles are described through images known as the semiotic
triangle.
The ‘symbol’ is, of course, the linguistic element – the word, sentence,
etc., and the ‘referent’ the object, etc, in the world of experience, while
‘though or reference’ is concept. According to the theory there is no
181
I Wayan Mulyawan
Structure Analysis of Ifaw.org advertisement
direct link between symbol and referent (between language and the
world) – the link is via thought or reference, the concept of our mind.
Signifier stimulus, which is regarded as elements of linguistic in the form of words
or sentences processed in the brain through the concept of meaning that we have
had over the signifier, then produces a response in form of object (referent) as a
signified. Therefore, signifier and signified are not directly related but linked
through the concept of meaning in the brain.
Through his works, Van Dijk (1982, p. 2) sparked a discourse analysis framework
that consists of three main structures: the macrostructure, superstructure, and
microstructure.
Superstructure
The superstructure is the basic framework of a text that covers the composition or
structure of the circuit or a text element in shaping a coherent unity of form. In other
words, the superstructure analysis is the analysis workflow schema or a text. Just
as a building, a text is also composed of various elements such the contents and
cover must be assembled in, as the introduction such a way, in order to form a
complete and interesting text.

Syntactic element is an element which helps the author to manipulate the situation
in a way to give tension thematically in a sentence level. The manipulation is in the
form of choosing the word used, pronoun, preposition and conjunction, and the way
to choose passive or active sentences. In this advertisement the syntactic element is
only found in the body copy, which contains the pronoun, preposition, and
conjunction. In the first clause “will only words remain?” the author uses the modal
“will” to give tension thematically in sentence level. That modal is use to build the
interrogative sentence. Then in the second clause, “time is running out! Visit
IFAW.org” the author use the exclamation mark to manipulate the situation of
imperative condition in sentences level.
Stylistic element is a display style of text by the usage of language as the device. A
text can choose various displays such as poem, drama, or narration. Related to the
language style, a text can show a style through its lexical choice, sentences choice,
figurative language, spelling, or the other language characteristics. The same as
syntactic elements in this non-commercial advertisements the stylistic element can
be found in body copy only. The syntactic elements in the form of lexical choice,
the author uses the word “words” that refers to the caligraphy word “elephant”. It
makes an interesting sense to make the clause more attractive. Then for the second
clause the author use the phrase “running out”. The sense will be different since the
phrase “running out” tends to make a sense that there is something that will be ‘out’
very soon.
Macrostructure
The topic of this advertisement is about the decrease of elephant’s population. Since
the number of elephants is decreasing even in their habitat nowadays, the theme of
this advertisement the less number of elephant population which have to be
conserved by all people. This theme is supported by each structure of
advertisements:

This icon has two intended meanings that is : 1) to indicate and show the object of
the advertisement; and 2) to emphasize the current condition of the elephant that is
at the edge of extiction.

Body copy: The term body copy can be defined as the text of an advertisement
completing the story, which is introduced by the headline and supported by the
illustrations. The body copy of this advertisement is the sentences “WILL ONLY
WORDS REMAIN?”
and “TIME IS
RUNNING OUT!
VISIT IFAW.ORG”.
These sentences can be
categorized as an
index, since it refers to something else which is not the real meaning of these
sentences. These sentences have function to convince the readers to prevent the
extinction of the elephant. The body copy gives the explanation about theme of
advertisement. The body copy is in form of short sentence, so the advertisement
will not lose the reader’s interest. These sentences also emphasize the major idea of
the advertisement which is to raise the awareness of people in order to prevent the
extinction of elephant.
Since it is a non-commercial
advertisement which has a purpose to
raise the people’s awareness of
elephants’ population, the maker of this
advertisement can be considered a non-
profit organisation. The maker of this
advertisement is IFAW (International

Fund of Animal Welfare), which does the fund raising for some rare animals. The
logo of IFAW is attached in the advertisement to give information to the readers
about the organization. The logo of IFAW can be categorized as a symbol, since
it’s already known as the symbol of fund raising for rare animal protection
organization IFAW (International Fund of Animal Welfare), in other words it can
be said that there is an agreement that this logo represents IFAW. Based on the
hyper-semiotica theory the signature line can be categorized as a proper sign, since
the logo of IFAW represents the funding organization that is appropriate with the
reality.
CONCLUSION
From the foregoing analysis can be concluded that this advertisement shows only 4
structures: Headline, Illustration, Bodycopy and Signatureline. The Headline is the
icon of an elephant that is represented as the caligraphy of the word elephant; The
Illustration is the scenic savana at dusk; The Bodycopy is the main text message “
WILL ONLY WORDS REMAIN? TIME IS RUNNING OUT! VISIT
IFAW.ORG”; and The Signatureline is the logo of IFAW.org

ABSTRACT
The paper analyses the use of non-observance of the Gricean Maxims in relation to
script incongruity in marriage jokes. The analysis is a library research and uses a
qualitative method. The data are analysed using the theory of Gricean Maxims by
H. P. Grice and I also use Victor Raskin’s Theory of Script Incongruity. The data
used are taken from Santa Banta Jokes. From the data that have been analysed, it
can be seen that the occurrence of humour is caused by the non-observance of the
Gricean maxims and this non-observance of the Gricean maxims creates an
implicature and triggers the existence of two different scripts in one joke. Raskin’s
theory of script incongruity is used to analyse the shift of one script to another,
which creates humour. I find that the flouting of the maxim of manner is mostly
used, and this is caused by the speaker’s response which is ambiguous or not clear.

INTRODUCTION
Human beings cannot live without having communication with others. That is why
communication is a very important part of our lives. The importance of
communication cannot be denied. Using effective communication skills is crucial
to relationships and to success at work. There are, of course, many types of
communication. We use verbal communication, non-verbal communication,
written communication and many forms of each of those (Brinser).
When people communicate with one another, deliberately or not, the speaker
sometimes tends to express his or her intention implicitly to the hearer. The speaker
does not always say directly what he or she means. As written in The Handbook of
Pragmatics by L.R. Horn, "What a speaker intends to communicate is
characteristically far richer than what she directly expresses; linguistic meaning
radically underdetermines the message conveyed and understood" (Nordquist).
When the participants of a conversation fail to observe the Gricean maxims, they
can misunderstand each other and we may find the situation funny. This
misunderstanding or funny atmosphere happens due to the speaker’s utterance
which gives more or less information than needed, is irrelevant, lacks adequate
evidence, and creates an ambiguous situation (Thomas, 1995, pp. 63-64). For that
reason, we have to be more aware when we are interpreting people’s utterances. In
order that we can interpret people’s utterances accurately, we need to observe the
maxims, which are introduced by H. P. Grice, because when a speaker says
something, his utterance may contain not only the literal meaning, but also the
figurative meaning.
In this paper I would like to observe the non-observance of the maxims in jokes.
The title of my paper is “Analysis of Non-observance of the Gricean Maxims in
relation to Script Incongruity in Marriage Jokes”. I choose this topic because I take
an interest in how a joke, especially that in the form of conversation, is interpreted.
In this paper, I would like to analyse the types of non-observance of the maxims in
a joke and the role they play in creating a joke. I believe that many people like jokes,
189
Karina Winita
Non-observance of the Gricean maxims in relation to script incongruity in marriage jokes
but they tend to fail to appreciate jokes due to lack of knowledge required to
understand it.
This topic is significant because the readers can be conscious of how a joke creates
the implicature and how the implicature works as the central of the jokes. It is
expected that the new knowledge will help the readers to appreciate and interpret
humour in the way it is aimed in the first place. Thus, after reading this thesis, the
readers are expected to understand jokes better.
This topic belongs to the study of Pragmatics as its main field. Specifically, the
theory that I am going to use to observe the utterances in the jokes for my thesis is
the non-observance of the Gricean maxims as one of the subfields of pragmatics.
Non-observance of the Gricean maxims occurs when the speaker’s utterance shows
that he does not observe the maxims due to deception, ethical reasons,
unwillingness to cooperate, and imperfect linguistic performance (Thomas, 1995,
pp. 72-76).
In this paper, I am going to use marriage jokes taken from some Internet websites
as my data. I decide to take the data from websites because the ample amount of
data that the websites contain can be used for my analysis. Moreover, websites offer
many categories of jokes, such as marriage, bar, doctors, lawyers, religions, and
children, that I can analyse. Most of the jokes on the websites are in the form of
conversation. Thus, it will be easy to analyse them in the study of pragmatics and
script incongruity.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
190
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 188-198
Flouting a Maxim
Flouting a maxim occurs when the speaker does not have any intention of deceiving
or misleading. It occurs because a speaker wishes to prompt the hearer to look for
a meaning which is hidden in or even different from the expressed meaning
(Thomas, 1995, p.65). Flouting a maxim is divided into: flouting a maxim of
quantity, quality, relation, and manner.
Violating a Maxim
Violating a maxim is the second type of the non-observance of the maxims. People
violate a maxim when they try to mislead the hearer (Thomas, 1995, p.72).
Infringing a Maxim
The third type of the non-observance of the maxims is infringing a maxim. It
happens when a speaker fails to observe a maxim because the speaker has imperfect
linguistic performance or impairment (Thomas, 1995, p.74).
Suspending a Maxim
Suspending a maxim happens when the speakers cover up something because of
their awareness of the situation. On top of that, they do cover something because of
their obedience to the cultural belief in a place (Thomas, 1995, p.76).
191
Karina Winita
Non-observance of the Gricean maxims in relation to script incongruity in marriage jokes
are the knowledge which one has when anticipating the outcome of a coming event.
However, the humorous effect is produced when there is a new script coming in the
end, replacing the first one.
Data 1
Wife : You always carry my photo in your handbag to the office. Why?
Husband : When there is a problem, no matter how impossible, I look at
your picture and the problem disappears.
Wife : You see, how miraculous and powerful I am for you?
Husband : Yes, I see your picture and say to myself, 'What other problem
can there be greater than this one?'
The joke above is about a husband who always brings his wife’s photo to the office.
The wife wants to know why her husband does it. Then, the husband replies that
whenever he faces a problem, he always looks at his wife’s photo and the problems
will disappear. With that answer, the wife thinks that her husband really loves her,
and asks whether her picture gives her husband strength to overcome his challenges.
However, the husband’s response is “What other problem can there be greater than
this one?” which means that his wife is the greatest problem for him.
The husband observes the maxim when answering the first question “You always
carry my photo in your handbag to the office. Why?” but he does not observe the
maxim when answering the second question “You see, how miraculous and
powerful I am for you?” Instead, he responds with a wordy answer, which implies
that the husband is flouting a maxim. His answer is wordy and he does it blatantly
in the hope that his wife will understand what he implies, which means that he is
flouting the maxim of manner as his answer is not to the point. The husband is also
flouting the maxim of quantity in saying “Yes, I see your picture and say to myself,
'What other problem can there be greater than this one?'” From the utterance above,
it is clearly seen that the husband gives more information than the situation requires.
In reality, the husband could just say ‘Yes’ without adding the information that his
wife is actually his greatest problem when answering his wife’s question “You see,
how miraculous and powerful I am for you?”
From the husband’s flouting of the maxim of manner and maxim of quantity, it can
be seen that the implicature of this joke is that the husband wants to tell his wife
that his wife is his greatest problem in life; that is why all his obstacles disappear
when he sees her wife’s photo, which reminds him of his greatest problem.
Seen from Raskin’s theory of script incongruity, the words ‘look at your picture’,
‘no matter how impossible’, ‘the problem’, and ‘disappears’ trigger ‘Wife Gives
Positive Impact on Husband Script’, in which the wife gives positive influence to
the husband. Thus the husband can overcome all problems no matter how
192
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 188-198
impossible they are by looking at his wife’s photo. Meanwhile, the words ‘look at
your picture’, ‘the problem’, ‘disappears’, ‘what other problem’, ‘can be greater
than’, and ‘this one’(referring to his wife’s photo) trigger ‘Wife is Husband’s
Greatest Problem Script’, in which the husband wants to tell his wife that she is his
most significant problem.
In the beginning, the reader follows the first script in which the wife gives a
significant impact to her husband but the reader is suddenly made to follow the
second script at the end of the story, when the truth that the wife is actually the
husband’s greatest problem is revealed. The flouting of the maxim of manner and
maxim of quantity allows the second script to occur in the story, which means
without any non-observance of the maxims, there will only be one script, and that
is why the non-observance of the maxims has an important role in creating a joke.

A man ordered for a voice automated robot car that does anything he tells it to do
correctly without any error.
He got the car and started sending it on errands. He became very proud of what the
car could do without mistakes.
One day, he was home and his wife told him to tell the car to go and pick the
children from school as she was very tired.
The man agreed and said to the car, "Car, go and bring my children from school."
The car went and didn't return in time as expected, they knew something must be
wrong. Several hours later and no car, the man became apprehensive.
He dressed up and got ready to lodge a report at the police station. As he and his
wife stepped outside they saw the car coming with an overload of children.
The car parked right in front of them and said, "These are your children sir." In the
car were their Landlady's two daughters, their choir mistress's two sons, his wife's
best friend's daughter, their pastor's son and their neighbour’s two sons.
The wife said, "Don't tell me all these are your children?"
The man asked her calmly, "Can you first tell me why our children are not in
the car?" (“Can’t stop laughing”)
The joke above is about a husband who has a voice automated robot car that does
anything he tells it to do. One day, the wife, who is very tired, tells the husband to
tell the car to pick up their children from school. However, several hours later the
car does not return in time as expected, and the husband becomes anxious. When
the husband and the wife are getting ready to go to the police station, the car arrives.
But the car brings the children who are not theirs. So the wife asks whether the
children in the car are her husband’s. However, the husband replies to his wife’s
question by asking another question "Can you first tell me why our children are not
in the car?"
193
Karina Winita
Non-observance of the Gricean maxims in relation to script incongruity in marriage jokes
From the husband’s response to the wife’s question “Don't tell me all these are your
children?”, we can clearly see that the husband is flouting a maxim. The husband
does not say if all of the children in the car, who are not theirs, are his children.
Instead, he replies to his wife’s question by asking her the question “Can you first
tell me why our children are not in the car?” This shows that the husband is flouting
the maxim of manner. The husband gives an indirect response to his wife. He does
not directly show his anger to his wife. Instead, he asks his wife by asking a wordy
question “Can you first tell me why our children are not in the car?” Truthfully, he
could just say ‘I’m not even the father of your children’ if he were to observe the
maxim.
In the end, the reader can see that the implicature of the husband’s question is that
the children, who the husband and wife think are theirs, are not even theirs, which
means the wife has had an affair with another man.
In terms of Raskin’s theory of script incongruity, two scripts can be found in the
joke. The first script is the wife’s ‘Unfaithful Husband Script’, triggered by the
words ‘bring my children’, ‘their Landlady's two daughters’, ‘their choir mistress's
two sons’, ‘his wife's best friend's daughter’, ‘their pastor's son’, and ‘their
neighbour’s two sons’. These expressions indicate that the husband has kids from
the landlady, the choir mistress, his wife’s best friend, the pastor, and the neighbour.
The second script is the husband’s ‘Unfaithful Wife Script’, triggered by the words
‘bring my children’, ‘why our children’, and ‘are not in the car’, which indicates the
children, who the husband thinks are his and his wife’s, are not actually theirs, but
they are the children of his wife and another man.
The wife’s script followed by the reader, which is about the husband being
unfaithful and having other children besides from his wife, suddenly changes to the
husband’s script, in which the wife has also been unfaithful and has had other
children from another man. The flouting of the maxim of manner allows the two
scripts to occur at the same time and creates humour.
Data 3
A lady walked into a pharmacy and told the pharmacist that she needed some
cyanide.
The pharmacist said, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?"
The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with
the pharmacist's wife.
194
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 188-198
The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "Well, now. You didn't tell me
you had a prescription.” (“Prescription for Love”)
The joke above is about a woman who wants to buy a poison from a pharmacy to
kill her husband. She tells the pharmacist that she needs some cyanide to kill her
husband but the pharmacist refuses to give her the poison. When the woman shows
the pharmacist a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife, the
pharmacist finally agrees to give her the poison by saying “Well, now. You didn't
tell me you had a prescription”, which is a big lie because the woman does not have
any prescription for the cyanide.
At first, the pharmacist does not want to give the woman the poison to kill her
husband because it is against the law. However, after the woman shows him a
picture of her husband and the pharmacist’s wife in a bed, the pharmacist flouts a
maxim by saying “Well, now. You didn't tell me you had a prescription.” The
pharmacist’s utterance indicates that he is flouting the maxim of quality, because it
is totally untrue that the customer has a prescription for the poison; the prescription
described by the pharmacist is signified by the picture of the woman’s husband and
the pharmacist’s wife in bed. He also flouts the maxim of manner since he does not
clearly show his intention to kill the wife’s husband.
In the end, the reader can see that the implicature of the pharmacist’s utterance is
that the pharmacist finally agrees to give the woman the cyanide to kill her husband,
because her husband is having an affair with the pharmacist’s wife.
Seen from Raskin’s theory of script incongruity, there are two existing scripts in the
joke. The first script is ‘Law-Abiding Pharmacist Script’, triggered by the words ‘a
lady needed some cyanide’, ‘I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband’, ‘against
the law’, ‘I'll lose my license’, ‘they'll throw both of us in jail’, ‘all kinds of bad
things will happen’, ‘absolutely not’, and ‘you cannot have cyanide’, which indicate
that the woman wants to buy cyanide to kill her husband but the pharmacist does
not want to give her the poison because it is against the law and he does not want
to get in trouble. The second script is the pharmacist’s ‘Angry Husband Script’,
triggered by the words ‘a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife’,
and ‘you didn't tell me you had a prescription’. These expressions indicate that when
the pharmacist finds out that his wife is having an affair with the woman’s husband,
he agrees to give the poison to the woman so that she can kill her husband.
At first, the reader follows the first script, in which the pharmacist does not want to
give the poison to the woman, but the reader is suddenly made to follow the second
script, in which the pharmacist finally gives the woman the poison because the
woman’s husband is having an affair with the pharmacist’s wife. The turning
process from the first script to the second script gives a chance for the incongruity
to happen. The incongruity happens because the pharmacist flouts the maxim of
quality and the maxim of manner.

Non-observance of the Gricean maxims in relation to script incongruity in marriage jokes
Data 4
A man in Scotland calls his son in London the day before Christmas Eve and says,
"I hate to ruin your day but I have to tell you that your mother and I are
divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough."
"Dad, what are you talking about?" the son screams.
"We can't stand the sight of each other any longer", the father says. "We're sick of
each other and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Leeds and
tell her."
Frantically, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone, "Like hell they're
getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this."
She calls Scotland immediately and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting
divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back and
we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?"
and hangs up.
The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife, "Done! They're coming for
Christmas - and they're paying their own way." (“Scottish Christmas”)
The joke above is about a man who lives in Scotland. He calls his son the day before
Christmas Eve and tells him that he and his wife are going to divorce and that forty-
five years is miserable enough for them. The son who hears this does not believe it.
The man says that he and his wife cannot stand each other anymore and he will call
his daughter in Leeds and tell her about the divorce. The son gets angry and tells
his dad that he is going to tell his sister and he will take care of this. Later on, after
the daughter learns about the news, she calls her father and screams at him saying
that they should not do a single thing until she and her brother get to Scotland and
they will be there tomorrow. After the phone is disconnected, the old man says to
his wife, “Done! They're coming for Christmas - and they're paying their own way.”
In the joke above, the man does not tell his children about what is really happening.
The man’s utterance “I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-
five years of misery is enough” shows that he is violating a maxim as the words
‘your mother and I are divorcing’ mislead the reader as well as the son and the
daughter into thinking that the father and mother are really getting divorced. The
goal of the man in saying that he and his wife are getting divorced is that their
family will gather on Christmas Day, since his son and daughter live separately
from him.
According to Raskin’s theory of script incongruity, there are two existing scripts in
the joke. The words ‘your mother and I divorcing’ trigger the man’s ‘Getting
Divorced Script’, in which the man tells his son and daughter that forty-five years
of marriage is miserable enough for them, and that they could not stand each other
any longer. Thus they want to get a divorce. The words ‘they’, ‘coming for
Christmas’, and ‘pay their own way’ trigger the daughter’s ‘Outwitting the Children
Script’, in which the children are fooled by their father with the divorce news. Their
parents are not really getting divorced, but the father says so just to make his son
and daughter come home for Christmas at their own expense.
196
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 188-198
In the beginning, the readers follow the first script, which is about the parents’
divorce; however, the reader is suddenly made to follow the second script, which is
about the parents who actually lie to their children just to make them come home
for Christmas. The violating of the maxim triggers the second script to occur in the
joke. It means that the non-observance of the maxims plays an important role in
creating a joke.
CONCLUSION
From the four data I have analysed, I find three data in which the speakers flout the
maxim and one data which show that the speakers violate the maxim. Three out of
four data show that the speakers flout the maxim of manner, which is the maxim
that is flouted the most. However, flouting the maxim of quantity and quality are
found in only one out of four data.
Script incongruity occurs when there is more than one script that exists at the same
time in the joke. These scripts are triggered by words or sequence of words that
appear in the joke. The non-observance of the maxim helps to achieve this situation,
since it may simply cause a misunderstanding or a funny atmosphere between the
participants. It also helps to create another script which replaces the first one that is
followed by the reader. This new script brings an unexpected point to the
conversation, and this new point is what makes the jokes funny.
In this paper, I analyse the data by using conversational implicature of the non-
observance of the maxim together with Raskin’s theory of script incongruity. In
accordance with my analysis, it is clearly seen that each joke has hidden meaning.
After doing this research for three semesters, I can say that the research has
increased my knowledge and understanding about utterances, including those with
hidden meaning, which are often given in an indirect message such as when people
do not want to hurt other people’s feelings.

ABSTRACT
Greeting pattern refers to a pattern that bounds a set of words or phrases used to describe
and call for the participants in a language event. The study of greeting patterns in Japanese
is a language research within the scope of sociolinguistics. Therefore, the theoretical basis
used in this study will be based on the sociolinguistic theory. This study aims to describe
the kinship greeting in Japanese social relations. Social relations are forms of social
relationships and social system. This research is a qualitative descriptive study which aims
to describe the use of greeting words used by speakers to addressees. Data in the study
were taken from the movie Samurai X: Reflection, collected by the method refer to

PENDAHULUAN
Linguis Jepang Loveday, 1986, hlm.
dimensi sosiolinguistik (Chaer, 2004, hlm. 5) karena itulah penelitan ini akan
dibahas dalam konteks sosiolinguistik.
Pengertian Kata sapaan, menurut Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (Tim Penyusun
Kamus Pusat Bahasa, 1998, hlm. 998), berarti ‘kata ajakan untuk bercakap; teguran;

1993, hlm. 62). Metode simak didukung dengan teknik lanjutan baik teknik simak
libat cakap (SLC) maupun teknik simak bebas libat cakap (SBLC). Teknik catat
proses komunikasi, (3) lingkungan sosial tempat peristiwa tutur terjadi (4) analisis

bahasa Jepang ditentukan oleh faktor-faktor diantaranya : (a) Tingkat Keakraban,
(b) Usia, (c) Hubungan Sosial, (d) Status Sosial, (e) Jenis Kelamin, (f) Keanggotaan
202
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 199-210

Namun

Hai, wakatta.
Iya, (saya) mengerti.
usia.
208
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 199-210
Haaaai.
Yaaa…
dengan sufiks ちゃん、sebagai istilah kekerabatan.
SIMPULAN
disematkan sufiks さん’san’. Bila vertikal ke bawah cukup menyematkan ちゃん’chan’
setelah nama diri (ND).
pada sapaan kosong pada anak laki yaitu penggunaan おまえ ‘omae’.
Keigo pada sapaan dalam masyarakat sosial Jepang, sangat dipengaruhi oleh konsep “uchi”;
sayang.

ABSTRACT
This study has the objective to identify and describe the categories of cultural
vocabulary as well as the strategies for translating those vocabulary into
Indonesian found in a Doraemon movie subtitle. In addition, this study also aims to
identify and describe the conditions of equivalent skewing found in this movie. The
data used in this study is a Doraemon movie entitled Stand by Me Doraemon. The
findings indicate that there are three categories in the cultural vocabulary found in
this movie with a total of 27 data, namely: (1) Ecology Category, (2) Cultural
Material Category, and (3) Organizations, Customs, Activities, Procedures,
Concepts Category. Translation strategies adopted are translation using cultural
substitution, translation using more general words, translation using the word with
more expressive meaning, translation using loan word, and translation using
paraphrasing. While the condition of equivalent skewing found is there are 14
sentences that can be considered having a skewing equivalence when viewed from
the meaning components analysis of the source text meaning and their counterparts
in the target text. Judging from the quantity of the total sentences and compared to
those skewing sentences, this condition can be considered not so many. Therefore,
it can be concluded that the translation provided in this movie is acceptable.

Film
Doraemon terbaru ini berjudul Stand by Me Doraemon yang di Indonesia dirilis
mulai tanggal 10 Desember 2014.
berbagai episode komik Doraemon.
padanan subtitle film Doraemon-Stand by Me ini pun dipaparkan dan diberikan
saran perbaikan terjemahan.

Stand by Me Doraemon ini berjumlah 27 data.
berubah wujud menjadi apa saja namun seringkali berubah wujud menjadi manusia.

bermakna ‘lubang; gua’. Matsuura, 2005, hlm. 351) memberi padanan kata iwaana
berupa frasa gua karang.

218
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 211-228
Ankipan terdiri atas dua kata yakni anki ‘penghafalan’ dan pan ‘roti’. Diceritakan
bahan pokok tepung terigu’.
Toumeimanto terdiri atas dua kata yakni: toumei ‘bening; tembus cahaya;
orang lain alias menghilang.

220
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 211-228
terdapat kata perkawinan (kekkon 結 婚), namun penerjemah menambahkan

menjadi padanannya. Jumlah ini termasuk sedikit apabila dibandingkan dengan
keseluruhan kalimat yang terdapat pada film Doraemon-Stand by Me yang memiliki
durasi sepanjang 94 menit. Berikut dipaparkan enam contoh penyimpangan
terjemahan tersebut, yakni:
(15) Mata tatasareteiru ≠ halaman
Teks Sumber Teks Sasaran Saran Perbaikan
Are, Nobita. Mata Nobita. Masih dihukum Lho, Nobita! Dihukum
tatasareteiru no? di halaman? berdiri lagi?
222
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 211-228
Teks Sumber Teks Sasaran Saran Perbaikan

(18) Umaku natte kita janai ≠ kau mulai menggantung padanya
Teks Sumber Teks Sasaran Saran Perbaikan
Umaku natte kita ja Kau mulai Kau sudah mahir
nai? menggantung padanya. rupanya?
pertama kali mencoba alat ajaib Doraemon yakni take-koputaa (baling-baling
bambu).
terjemahan subtitle bahasa Inggris yakni: “You’re getting the hang of it” yang
224
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 211-228
Pesan inilah (Ura de tsutsumu to,

226
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 211-228
Doraemon-Stand by Me dengan total data 27 buah kata/frasa.
Frasa
Apaatogokko no Ki yang dipadankan menjadi “rumah pohon bawah tanah”
kategori baik.

ABSTRACT
This research is to determine the student response to the retelling strategies on listening.
The method that used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Closed and opened
questionnaire are used to collect data. From the results of the questionnaire discovered
that 1) The retelling Strategy at the end of the listening class doesn’t affect the student’s
motivation to attend the class; 2) The retelling strategy motivated students to speak in
Japanese; 3) retelling strategies can improve thestudent’s Japanese ability such as the
ability to speak, vocabulary, ability to summarize and retelling information, the ability to
use Japanese sentence patterns. By the open questionnaire note that 100% of students
expect the activity of retelling on listening class can be forwarded. Based on the results of
the study also note that about 70% of students does not have courage to speak in Japanese,
so I expected retelling strategies can be used in teaching other subjects in order to

PENDAHULUAN
Willis, 1981, hlm.
seseorang mengerti informasi tersebut; 4) Mengindentifikasi poin-poin relevan;
230
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 229-239
Program Studi Sastra Jepang:
1. Kecenderungan mahasiswa menjawab lembar kerja soal saja tanpa mengerti isi
materi.
ataupun meyiapkan materi sebelumnya.
Sastra Jepang Fakultas Sastra UNIKOM.
Program Studi Sastra Jepang UNIKOM.
231
Pitri Haryanti

232
JIA, Vol. 2 No. 3 April 2016: 229-239
233
Pitri Haryanti

Program Studi Sastra Jepang Fakultas Sastra Unikom
setiap orangnya.
Pengoreksian sebaiknya dilakukan seminimal mungkin, maksimal tiga kali.
