Hello, Komang Yulia! Let me introduce myself. My name is Hannah.

I know your name from my friend Komang Adi Putra. He told me that you sent him an email,
telling him that you would like to have more pen pals from the US. I’d really like to be your E-
pal. You sound really cool!

I guess I’d better tell you something about myself first. I’m 16 years old and I attend Thomas
Alva Edison High School here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I have two brothers and two
half sisters and I’m the middle child. My father died a few years ago so my mother runs the
house and the family business. My father was a barista.

I have lots of hobbies. I like music – mostly classical music and folk music – but I don’t play an
instrument. I like sports, especially tennis and basketball. At school I’m in the basketball team
and i spend most of my extra-curricular time playing basket ball. I’m into animals very much.
My sister and I have three dogs. They need lots of attention as you can imagine. My favourite
subjects at school are arts and geography. I think I’d like to become a park ranger when I
graduate, perhaps working for the National Park Services. I don’t like reading but I love
drawing and painting. How about you?

I see that you have the same first name “Komang” so I was wondering if you and Komang Adi
are siblings. Please drop me a line, Komang Yulia! Can’t wait to hear from you!

Warm greetings from Bali!

Dear Hannah, I was so excited to have your email about yourself and your family. I
would really like to be your E-pan.
I’m seventeen years old school student from Singaraja, Bali, a beautiful island in
Indonesia. Actually, my home is in Singaraja, but I attend SMA Negeri Bali Mandara boarding
school, so I stay there with all of my friends and teacher until I graduate. All of my school
expenses are covered by the government of Bali because I come from the unfortunate family.
My father passed away three years ago, so my family and I have struggled in difficult
conditions. My twin sisters quit school when they were 15 and now working in a restaurant
and my younger brother is just 4 years old. My mother works in the market, selling fruits and
vegetables while taking care of her children.
My favourite subjects are social sciences. I like history very much because it helps me
know more how different countries existed in the past. At school we are supposed to use
English at all times, so we have become quite fluent although sometimes we slip back into
Indonesian or Balinese, which are our mother tongue.
As for hobbies, I’m really into songs and music. My favourite boy band is One Direction
and my Indonesian singer is of course Vidi Aldiano. I’m really into books. I like reading novels
and short stories. I like some writers in English, like JK Rowling and Indonesian writers too,
like Andrea Hirata and Ahmad Fuadi. My dream, when I’m older, is to be a writer of science
fiction books.
We have a unique name tradition for names, based on our birth. I was the third child
so I was named “Komang”. It’s the common name for the third child. For the first, we have
Putu, Luh, Gede or Wayan. The second child would be Made, Nengah and Kadek. The third is
Komang or Nyoman and the fourth child is Ketut. That is why I have the same first name like
Komang Adi because we both are the third child.
I’d really love to come to US someday, especially to New York. What about you? Do
you want to visit my country, especially Bali?

and about seventeen years ago right?
My family and I have just moved to Jakarta from Bandung two months ago. When the first
time live in Jakarta, I feel very hot but it has been a normal condition for me right now. In
Bandung, I had a unique hobby that was speed cubing. It was a brain to play the Rubik’s cube
faster and faster.

I also spend my time to play football and listening to the music when I get bored at home.
But, when I live in Jakarta, I even have no idea to play football with my friends. Because, here
I am a stranger and haven’t got friend yet. I live in Jl Kepulauan raya, West Jakarta. It’s
approximately five kilometers from this school and I come here by bus.

In my house, I live with my parents and my twin sisters called Andin and Andina. My parents
are Mr. Darmawan Sahreza and Mrs. Maia Sahreza. My father works as an engineer in one of
the big company in Jakarta, while my mother works as an accountant in insurance company.
My younger sisters are 5th grade of elementary school and both of them are ten years old.

I really like to have a penpal from Bali, because I know that Balinese people are very friendly.
