Latar Belakang Discussion Text
Teks ini dibuat dalam rangka memberikan penengah atau solusi. Sehingga, kita semua
baik penulis maupun pembaca teks tidak memandang suatu persoalan dari satu sisi
saja, namun bisa dari sisi yang berbeda serta selanjutnya menemukan solusi,
kesimpulan, dan rekomendasi yang paling tepat atas persoalan yang dibahas.

Pengertian Discussion Text

Menrurut para ahli, pengertian discussion text menggunakan Bahasa Inggris adalah:
Discussion Text is “a text which present a problematic discourse. This problem will
be discussed from different viewpoints. Discussion is commonly found in
philosophical, historic, and social text.”

Jadi dari pengertian diatas bisa kita pahami bahwa Discussion Text adalah Sebuah
teks yang berisi sebuah diskusi atau berdebatan (wacana) dalam skala besar sehingga
menimbulkan Pro dan kontra pada amasyarakat dan khalayak orang banyak.

Tujuan Discussion Text

Tujuan discussion text adalah untuk menyajikan sebuah isu atau informasi dengan
memaparkan beberapa pendapat para ahli dalam bidangnya dan biasanya pendapat
yang dipaparkan tersebut bertentangan (pro dan kontra). Sehingga bisa disimpulkan
bahwa penulis membuat teks tersebut berdasarkan wacana yang berada dalam
masyarakat.

Struktur Discussion Text

1. Issue / Isu

Pada bagian ini biasanya terletak di awal paragraf yang berisi penempatan masalah
atau isu yang akan didiskusikan/diperdebatkan.

2. Supporting Points / Poin-poin pendukung

Dalam bagian ini, penulis menghadirkan pendapat yang mendukung isu (Pro). Di
setiap paragraf Supporting Point terdiri dari dua komponen diantaranya adalah ide
pokok paragraf dan elaborasi atau uraian dari ide pokok paragraf tersebut.
 3. Contrasting Points / Poin-poin pembanding

Dalam bagian ini, penulis menghadirkan pendapat yang menentang isu atau
permasalahan (Kontra). Seperti dalam paragraf Spportin Point, Contrasting Points
juga menghadirkan dua komponen pembentuk yaitu ide pokok paragraf dan elaborasi
atau uraian ari ide pokok paragraf tersebut.

4. Conclusion or Recommendation / Konklusi atau rekomendasi

Dalam bagian ini penulis menghadirkan kesimpulan atau bisa juga rekomendasikan
dari isu/wacana atau permasalahan yang telah didiskusikan.

Ciri Kebahasaan / Language feature Discussion Text

Ketika membuat discussion text, penulis harus memperhatikan penggunaan bahasa
yang biasa diterapkan, seperti:

1. Using simple present tense

2. Using modal, such as (must, should, would, may, etc.)
3. Using additive, contrastive, dan casual connection, seperti similiary, however,
furthemore, on the other hand, moreover, in addition, but, nevertheless, etc.
4. Using of comment adverb to express opinion, such as personally, obviously,
clearly, etc.
5. Using of saying verbs to quote,relating verb(e.g., is), thinking verbs expressing
a personal point of view
6. Generally use third person
7. Using a srarement about matter

Video Games

Nowadays, the video games industry is developing rapidly. It becomes a multi-billion

dollar industry. Video games have become an important part not only in the children’
life, but also in the adults’ life. Nevertheless, there is an argument whether video games
bring good or bad influences on children.

People who have a pro argument claim that video games give a lot of benefits, playing
video games is a good way to kill children’s boredom. It can refresh the children’s mind
after a tiring school day. Moreover, they also argue that video games can trigger
children to be more creative because the games provide challenging ways to win. In
other words, they believe that the video games can actually sharpen a human’s brain.

Conversely, some people believe that video games make children lazy. They argue that
playing video games is addictive. As a consequence, most of the children prefer playing
video games to studying. These children find it hard to concentrate on their study
because they always think about how to spend more time playing video games. In fact,
there are also some children who skip their extracurricular lessons, just because they
want to play video games. In addition, most of the video games often expose too much
violence. Two years ago in the USA, for example, a student shot his teacher and some
of his friends. Newspapers said that the boy was deeply influenced by the actions in the
video games he used to play with.

It is obvious that video games have more disadvantages than advantages. Therefore,
parents should be very careful in selecting the appropriate games for their children.
