Ketika melihat suatu kejadian atau suatu keadaan, kita tidak jarang membahasnya atau
mendiskusikannya kepada teman, keluarga atau orang lain. Misalnya terkait isu pembelajaran
tatap muka dan pembelajaran online. Dari diskusi tersebut akan terdapat orang yang setuju akan
suatu poin dan ada pihak yang bertentangan. Lalu di akhir diskusi akan ada sebuah kesimpulan
dan saran terkait isu yang sedang dibahas.
 
Definisi Discussion Text

sebuah teks yang berisi diskusi terkait sebuah isu.

Isu dapat dibahas dari berbagai sudut pandang, misalnya dari sudut pandang orang yang
langsung terlibat, atau hanya pengamat saja. Biasanya, discussion text ini ditemukan dalam teks
filosofis, historis dan sosial.

Tujuan/purpose dari discussion text adalah

untuk menyampaikan argumen dan informasi dari berbagai sudut pandang.

to present the writer's positive and negative view on a particular issue.

Terdapat argumen yang ada di dalam discussion text dan sebagiannya merupakan eskposisi, baik
dalam bentuk analytical exposition (pemberian argumen dan penyamapaian kembali pandangan)
atau hortatory exposition (pemberian argumen yang lebih kuat dan merekomendasikan aksi).
Meskipun terdapat bagian teks eksposisi di dalam teks diskusi dalam bahasa Inggris, kedua teks
ini memiliki perbedaan.

Exposition text baik itu analytical exposition text atau hortatory exposition text hanya membahas
mengenai satu sudut pandang saja (entah itu setuju atau tidak setuju terhadap isu yang
dibahas).

Sedangkan discussion text membahas dari kedua sisi, yaitu sisi yang disetujui penulis dan tidak
disetujui penulis, atau sisi pro dan kontra dari hal yang sedang dibahas. In conclusion,
ciri-ciri discussion text adalah pemaparan isu, kemudian argumen pro dan kontra terkait isu yang
dibahas serta saran untuk pembaca.
 
Kaidah Kebahasaan Discussion Text/ Language Features
Dalam teks diskusi bahasa Inggris terdapat kaidah kebahasaan yang harus ada di dalamnya, di
antaranya adalah sebagai berikut:
 
1. Introducing category or generic participant

Memberi isu yang akan dibahas.

For example: “Homeschooling”, “Usage of the Internet”, “Distance Learning” dan lain-lain
 
2. Using the thinking verb

Such as feel, hope, believe, certain dan lain-lain. Salah satu contohnya dalam kalimat adalah
sebagai berikut:
“Parents choose to homeschool to educate their kids because they believe that homeschooling
can be a personalized schedule.”

“Orang tua memilih homeschooling untuk mendidik anak-anak mereka karena mereka percaya
bahwa homeschooling bisa menjadi jadwal yang dipersonalisasi”
 
3. Using additive, contrast, and casual connection 

Similarly, on the other hand, however, dan lain-lain. Berikut contoh kalimatnya:
“On the other hand, homeschooling can spoil parents' time.”

“Di sisi lain, homeschooling dapat merusak waktu orang tua.”

 
4. Using modalities

Must, should, could, may, dan lain-lain.   

“So, when thinking about putting children through home school, I believe we should make sure
that we understand all of the criteria involved in home education.”

 “Jadi, ketika berpikir untuk menyekolahkan anak di sekolah rumah, saya yakin kita harus

5. Using adverbs of manner

Deliberately (Dengan sengaja), hopefully, dan lain-lain.

“Another advantage is flexibility in time and curriculum. By homeschooling, parents can set the
curriculum freely.”
“Keunggulan lainnya adalah fleksibilitas waktu dan kurikulum. Dengan homeschooling, orang
tua bisa mengatur kurikulum dengan leluasa.”
 
Struktur dari Discussion Text
Sebagaimana yang kita tahu, setiap teks pasti memiliki strukturnya. Berikut adalah generic
structure dari discussion text:
 
1. Statement of issue

Paragraf pertama merupakan perkenalan dan/atau pernyataan mengenai isu yang akan
didiskusikan.
Biasanya isu tersebut merupakan isu hangat yang sedang beredar di sekitar.
Selain itu, temanya beragam, dapat berupa isu filosofis, isu pendidikan, isu historis, isu sosial,
isu politik dan isu-isu lainnya.
 
2. List of supporting points

Paragraf selanjutnya penulis memberikan beberapa hal yang mendukung isu yang sedang
dibahas atau menyampaikan argumen pro.
Bisa tentang keuntungan, manfaat, dan sebagainya. 
 
3. List of contrast points

Berkebalikan dengan paragraf yang berisi tentang hal-hal yang mendukung isu, penulis
memberikan beberapa hal yang tidak mendukung isu tersebut in other words, menyampaikan
argumen kontra. Bisa berupa kerugian, hal negatif dan lain-lain.
 
4. Recommendation

Di paragraf terakhir, penulis memberikan rekomendasi terkait isu yang sedang dibahas kepada
pembaca, atau subjek yang terdapat pada discussion text. Bisa berupa saran untuk melakukan
sebuah tindakan terhadap isu tersebut, atau saran agar baik pembaca atau subjek dalam
discussion text lebih mempelajari isu yang dibahas dari berbagai sudut pandang sebelum
membuat keputusan.

Homeschooling is an alternative way to educate our kids besides sending them to public school.
Homeschooling is becoming more popular every day. There are about two million children
currently learning at home. However, it has some advantages and disadvantages.

be a personalized schedule. Homeschooling allows parents and children to work out a schedule
that will best work for the child. Another advantage is flexibility in time and curriculum. By
homeschooling, parents can set the curriculum freely.
On the other hand, homeschooling can spoil parents' time. Homeschooling needs a lot of time in
preparation and delivery. Parents have to research topics, prepare the lessons, set up the
projects, and field the trips.

Distance Learning
A few years ago, distance learning was seen as an inferior way but nowadays even famous and
established traditional colleges and universities are providing distance learning courses and it is
generally considered a way to improve one's life.
However, people still argue whether distance learning give more advantages or disadvantages.
Some of them who see the benefit of distance learning will say that distance learning needs no
commuting. Of course, it saves money and time that students would take. Furthermore, distance
learning can be done at any student’s convenience. Most of the classes of distance learning are
asynchronous. It means that students do not have to attend a lecture at a fixed particular time
and place. Students can review the assignments and do their homework during off-hours or from
home. Additionally, distance learning gives more accessibility. No one can deny it. People with
limited mobility may encounter problems when they take traditional classes. With the online
class system, the problem is absent.
Despite the many advantages, other people will see that distance learning is costly and needs
complex technology. To attend online learning, students must have a computer with possible
access to the internet. Admitted or not, such technology devices are not always available for
common students. Another disadvantage of distance learning is that it does not provide
immediate feedback. Unlikely in a traditional classroom, students have to wait for feedback and
comment until the instructor has reviewed the works and sent a response to them. Most of the
time students will study alone. Distance learners may feel isolated or miss that social and
physical interaction that comes with attending a traditional classroom
Regarding the individual’s learning style, some students are able to learn when there is a live
interaction between them and the availability of an accompanying teacher while others don’t
really need it. So before deciding a choice of attending distance learning or not, each student
needs to do a fair analysis regarding the kind of person he/she is.

mungkin mengalami masalah ketika mereka mengambil kelas tradisional. Dengan sistem kelas
online, masalah tidak ada.

Most people agree that some form of family limitation or spacing is desirable for the good of the
family and society. But individuals and groups– especially religious groups–differ sharply on the
methods of birth control that they consider moral and acceptable.

Couples that practice birth control do so for various reasons. They may want to limit or space
their children or to have no children at all. Young couples often postpone having children so that
both partners can work full-time. Other couples space their children so they can give each child
as much attention as possible. Some women are advised by their doctors to avoid pregnancy for
health reasons. In many countries with rapidly growing populations, the government encourages
couples to limit the size of their families.

Even though birth control has gained in acceptance, opposition to the practice is continuous.
Some people fear that birth control encourages sexual relations outside marriage or that

grounds.

Some religious groups teach that artificial methods of birth control are immoral because they
