What is Narrative Text?
- Narrative text is a type of text that tells a chronological story in the past tense.

- The Purpose of Narrative Text: The aim of narrative text is to entertain the readers through the amusing story.

- Kinds of Narrative text:


1. Fairy tale
Singkatnya, fairytale adalah dongeng dengan genre cerita fantasi atau tidak nyata. Fairytale biasanya berbentuk
cerita rakyat atau cerita anak-anak yang kisahnya diselimuti oleh keajaiban.

2. Folktale/Folklore
Hampir sama dengan fairytale, folktale atau folklore adalah cerita rakyat yang bersifat turun temurun.

3. Legend
Legend adalah cerita legenda yang berasal dari perpaduan antara fairy tale dengan folktale.

4. Myth
Yap, ada pula jenis dari narrative text adalah myth adalah mitos.

5. Science fiction
Science fiction biasa disingkat sebagai Sci-Fi, adalah cerita yang berkisah mengenai fiksi ilmiah.

6. Romance
Romance atau love story adalah narrative text yang berisi mengenai perjuangan cinta si tokoh utama.

7. Horror stories
Narrative text selanjutnya adalah horror stories.

8. Fable
Pernah dengar cerita atau kisah-kisah yang tokoh utamanya adalah binatang? Nah, itu namanya narrative text jenis
fabel.

10. Slice of life


Iya, kalau dalam bahasa Indonesia, slice of life bisa diartikan sebagai “potongan kehidupan”, slice of life adalah teks
yang berisi tentang kegiatan sehari-hari penulis atau tokoh imajinatif yang diciptakan oleh penulis.
11. Personal experience
Jenis narrative text lainnya adalah personal experience atau pengalaman pribadi penulis.

- Generic Structure of Narrative Text:


1. Orientation
Bagian ini mengenalkan tokoh dalam cerita (characters) serta latar terjadinya cerita yang meliputi latar tempat,
waktu, suasana, dan keadaan sosial (setting).

2. Complication
Bagian ini berisi permasalahan yang terjadi di dalam sebuah cerita. Secara lebih detail, complication terbagi lagi
menjadi 3 bagian, yaitu:
a. Rising action: Masalah mulai muncul
b. Climax: Puncak permasalahan
c. Falling Action: Tensi permasalahan mulai menurun, dan mulai menemukan titik penyelesaian.

3. Resolution
3 kinds of Resolution: Happy ending, Sad ending, Cliffhanger (Menggantung)

4. Re-orientation (Optional)
Bagian terakhir dari struktur teks narasi (narrative text) ini biasanya berisi kesimpulan, pesan moral (moral value),
atau perubahan watak tokoh di akhir cerita.

- Narrative text juga memiliki unsur kebahasaan/ language feature yang terdiri atas 7 unsur sebagai berikut.
1. Menggunakan past tense,
2. Menggunakan keterangan waktu atau adverb of time, contohnya when, suddenly, before, until, soon.
3. Menggunakan konjungsi waktu atau time conjunction, contohnya after, as soon as, then.
4. Menggunakan karakter spesifik atau specific character, contohnya Aladin, Rapunzel, Cinderella.
5. Kata kerja aksi atau action verbs, contohnya walked, wrote, bought, talked.
6. Menggunakan direct speech atau kalimat langsung yang menggunakan present tense, contohnya Aladin say,
“she is the one”
7. Menggunakan saying and thinking verb atau kata kerja yang menunjukan ujaran, contohnya told, said,
thought.

The Red Wristband


A doctor was working at a hospital, a hospital where the patients were tagged with coloured bands. Green: alive.
Red: deceased.

One night, the doctor was instructed to get a few supplies from the basement of the hospital, and so he headed to
the lift. The lift doors opened and there was a patient inside, minding her own business. Patients were allowed to
roam around the hospital to stretch, especially those who have stayed long. The rule was to be back in their rooms
before ten.
The doctor smiled at the patient before pressing the number for the basement. He found it unusual that the woman
didn’t have a button already pressed. He wondered if she was heading to the basement too.

The lift finally reached the floor where the doors opened. In the distance a man was limping towards the elevator,
and in a panic the doctor slammed the elevator button to close. It finally did and the lift began to ascend back up,
the doctor’s heart pounding.
“Why did you do that? He was trying to use the lift.” The woman stated, annoyed.
“Did you see his wrist?” The doctor asked, “It was red. He died last night. I would know because I did his surgery.”

The woman lifted her wrist. He saw red. She smiled. “Like this one?”

Who’s in my bed?
A father went to say good night to his seven-year-old son, very well knowing that if he didn’t, his son would have
trouble sleeping. It was a nightly routine between them. He entered the dimly lit room where his son waited under his
blanket. With the first glance the father could tell there was something unusual about his son tonight, but couldn’t put
his finger on it. He looked the same but had a grin that drew from ear to ear
 dimly lit room: Remang2
 Grin: smile broadly, especially with the mouth open.

“You okay, buddy?” the father asked.


The son nodded, still with the grin, before saying, “Daddy, check for monsters under my bed.”
The father chuckled a bit before getting on his knees to check only to satisfy his son.
There, under the bed, pale and afraid, was his son. His real son. He whispered, “Daddy, there someone on my bed”.

A mother’s call
A daughter was in her room upstairs, doing her homework, when suddenly she heard her mother call to come down

hands grabbed her and pulled her into the laundry room besides the staircase.

She panicked before realizing it was her mother, her real mother, eyes watery and bloodshot. “Don’t go down there
honey, I heard it too.”

The following text is for question 1 - 2.

Once, a hunter lived a village. He used to boast of his brave hunting trips to the villagers. The villagers respected him
a lot. He mostly told everyone how he had fought a lion bare-handed. He said that the tiny animals used to get
scared even at the sight of him.
One day, the hunter was passing through a forest. He met a woodcutter from the same village.
The boastful hunter approached him and said, “How are you? it’s a fine day, isn’t it?”
“Yes, yes, indeed!” the woodcutter replied.
“Well, can you tell me if you have seen some footprints of the lion nearby? it’s been months since i defeated any.”
The woodcutter knew that the hunter only boasted, so he said, “Yes, a lion is in a nearby den. Can i take you there?”
The scared hunter said, “No … No … i only just wanted to see his footprints.”
Finally, the boastful hunter ran away from the spot.

Across the river, there was green grassland, with young leaves. 'Hmm.. it seems delicious' imagined the mouse deer,
'but how can I get there? I can't swim, the current is very rapid?'
The mouse deer was figuring out the way how to reach there. Suddenly, he jumped to the air, 'aha.: he then walked
to the edge of the river. He didn't see the reflection because the water flowed very fast. He dipped one of his fore
legs into the water. A few moment later, appeared Mr. Crocodile showing his sharp teeth. He then laughed; "Ha...
ha... ha, you can't run away from me, You'll be my tasty lunch!" said the crocodile.
"Of course I can't. You are very strong, Mr. Croco," replied the mouse deer frightened. Then, the other crocodiles
approached moving slowly. They approached the edge of the river.
"But, before you all have a party, I wonder how many your members are there in the river. If I know your number
exactly, I can distribute my meat evenly, "said the mouse deer.
"Oh...o, great, good idea! But we are a large group, I can't count it precisely," Mr. Croco moaned. "Leave it to me,
and I can make it for you!" Now, can you ask the others to line up, from one edge to the other edge of the river? The
mouse deer requested. Then the crocodiles arranged themselves in line from one edge to the other edge of the
river. The mouse deer jumped to the body of one crocodile to the others while he was counting, 'one, two, three;
and so forth up to ten. Then at last he arrived at grassland, and he thanked to the dumb crocodiles.

The Bear and the Two Friends


Once, two friends were walking through the forest. They knew that anything dangerous can happen to them at any
time in the forest. So they promised each other that they would remain united in case of danger.
Suddenly, they saw a large bear approaching tern. One of the friends at once climbed a nearby tree. But the other
one did not know how to climb. So being led by his common sense, he lay down on the ground breathless,
pretending to be a dead man.
The bear came near the man lying on the ground. It smelt his ears and slowly left the place. Because the bear did not
touch him, the friend on the tree came down and asked his friend on the ground, "Friend, what did the bear tell you
into your ears?" The other friend replied, "He advised me not to believe a false friend.

A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like creature named Kbo Iwo. The people of Bali used to say
that Kbo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the
Balinese people enough food for a thousand men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new harvest was still a long way off.
This made Kbo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed all the houses and even all the temples. It
made the Balinese turn to rage.
So, they came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his stupidity. They asked Kbo Iwo to
build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he had destroyed. After they fed Kbo Iwo, he
began to dig a deep hole.
One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village gave a sign, and the villagers
began to throw the limestone they had collected before into the hole. The limestone made the water inside the hole
boiling . Kbo Iwo was buried alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it overflowed and
formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kbo Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

I hope in time you will forgive me. Let me take you home and become a family again. They returned to their home
and the stepmother became the best mother anyone could wish to have, and of course they lived happily ever after!

“The Ugly Duckling”
A little duckling was terribly unhappy because he thought he was the ugliest amongst all his brothers and
sisters. They’d not play with him and titillated the poor ugly duckling. One day, he saw his reflection within the water
and cried, “Nobody likes me. I’m so ugly.” He decided to go away from home and went far-off into the woods.
Deep within the forest, he saw a cottage in which there lived an old lady, her hen, and her cat. The duckling
stayed with them for a few times however he was sad there and shortly left. Once the winter set in, the poor
duckling nearly froze to death. A peasant took him home to his woman and kids. The poor duckling was afraid of the
kids and escaped. The ugly duckling spent the winter in a very marshy lake.
Finally, spring arrived. One day, the duckling saw a gorgeous swan swimming within the lake and fell in love
with her. Then again he remembered how everybody made fun of him and he bent his head down in shame. Once he
saw his own reflection in the water he was astonished. He wasn’t an unsightly duckling any longer, but a handsome
young swan! Now, he knew why he had looked so completely different from his brothers and sisters. “They were
ducklings but I used to be a baby swan!” he said to himself. He married the gorgeous swan and lived happily ever
once.
