of one or more components binding in a gas/liquid mixture by a solid
substance on its surface.
Adsorpstion is a materials separation process from a gas mixture by
means of one or more components binding in a solid mixture on its surface.
(the adsorpstion substances are called adsorbents).
16
In general adsorption can be interpreted as physical events on the surface
of a material, which depends on the specifications of the adsorbent with the
adsorbed substance (adsorbate).
17
4. Small pore diameter, resulting in a larger surface area and higher
adsorption capacity.
5. The adsorbents must also have a porous structure which is clearly
separated which enables fast transport of water vapor in the form of
gas.
6. There is no significant change in volume during the process of
adsorption and desorption.
18
Activated carbon can be made from coal, wood, and coconut shell
through pyrolizing and carburizing process at temperatures of 700 to
800 0C. Almost all adsorbate can be absorbed by activated carbon
except water. Activated carbon can be found in the form of slurry and
granular. Generally activated carbon can adsorb methanol or
ammonia up to 30%, even super activated carbon can adsorp up to
two time.
Kegunaan karbon aktif adalah / The usefulness of activated carbon
are:
konsumsi.
1. Useful as a filter to purify the water, the simple example is water
refill depot where activated carbon is placed in the filter tube so
that the water are clear, odorless, and worth in consumption.
2. Useful in chemical plants, it is similar to the pharmaceutical field
to filter the waste water into water that is no longer harmful to
the environment when disposed of.
3. Useful in sugar mills. Sugar is made from a yellow sugarcane
juice so that if directly processed will produce an colored sugar,
to be white pure colored activated carbon can be used as yellow
color remover on white sugar.

berudara/bersuhu. Silika gel juga membantu menahan kerusakan
pada barang-barang yang akan disimpan.Silika gel yang siap untuk
digunakan berwarna biru.
kemampuan adsorpsinya hilang. Silika gel sering ditemukan dalam
kotak paket dan pengiriman film, kamera, teropong, alat-alat
komputer, sepatu kulit, pakaian, makanan, obat-obatan, dan
peralatan peralatan lainnya.
Silica gel is a form of silica with the chemical formula SiO2 which
produced by coagulation of sodium silicate (NaSiO2). Silica gels are
substances used to absorb the moisture of gas and liquid particles
from a valve chamber/ temperatured room. Silica gel also helps to
resist damage of the goods to be stored. Silica gel which ready to
use is blue colored. The color of silica gel which has absorbed a lot
of moisture will change into pink and can no longer absorb the
moisture so it must be regenerated. This can be done with warm
them in the oven. The heat from the oven will emit moisture, and will
change the color of saturated silica gel into blue so that it can be used
again. In general, the working temperature of silica gel up to 200 ºC,
if it is operated over the range of working temperature then the water
content in silica gel will be lost and will cause a loss of its adsorption
capability. Silica gel is often found in a package box and films
shipping, cameras, binoculars, computer equipments, leather shoes,
clothes, foods, medicines, and other equipments.
21
Kemampuan desorpsi silika gel meningkat
dengan naiknya temperatur. Silika gel terbuat dari silika dengan
ikatan kimia mengandung air kurang lebih 5 %.
Silica gel tends to bind adsorbates with relatively less energy and
require low temperatures for the desorpstion process, than if using
other adsorbents like activated carbon or zeolite. Desorption ability
of silica gel increased with the increasing temperature. Silica gel is
made of silica with chemical bonds containing of water for
approximately 5%.
22
4. Zeolit / Zeolite
Zeolit digunakan untuk pengeringan dan pemisahan campuran
hidrokarbon. Zeolit memiliki kemampuan adsorpsi tinggi karena
memiliki porositas tinggi. Zeolit mengandung kristal zeolit yaitu
mineral aluminosilicate yang disebut sebagai penyaring molekul.
Mineral aluminosilicate ini terbentuk secara alami. Zeolit buatan

Bauxite is a sedimentary rock which is an aluminum ore and is used
for oil decolorising and gas drying with the chemical formula Al 2O3.

7. Resin
Resin is a natural or synthetic polymer substance that one of its
functions is to bind certain cations and anions and eliminating the
lime content. Technically, hard water is passed through a vessel
containing cation and anion binder resin, so it is expected that cations
Ca2+ and Mg2+ bound by the resin. Thus, the water will be free of
hardness. In general, resin is soluble in alcohol but not in water.

8. Activated Clay
Activated clay is clay, which has been treated to improve its ability to
absorb, mainly used for oil decolorising.
9. Bentonit / Bentonite
sebagainya. Bentonit juga dapat digunakan sebagai pengering
karena sifat adsorpsinya.
26
Shaped clay minerals that has the characteristic of absorbing.
Bentonite usually formed from the weathering of volcanic ash and
widely used as ingredients of cosmetics, ceramic, cement, paint, and
so forth. Bentonite can also be used as a dryer because of its
adsorption characteristic.
27
11. Decolorising carbon
Digunakan untuk menghilangkan warna pada minyak.
Used to remove the oil color.
28
Adapun beberapa karakteristik adsorbat, yang meliputi :
As for some of adsorbate characteristics, which include:
1. Densitas dan berat molekul / Density and molecular weight
2. Ukuran dan bentuk molekul / Size and shape of molecule
Appropriate molecular size is important so that the adsorption process
may occur, it is due to the molecules that can be adsorbed are
29
molecules whose diameter is less than or equal to the pore diameter of
adsorbent.
3. Tekanan uap / Vapor pressure
4. Konsentrasi / Concentration
5. Adanya senyawa lain sebagai kompetitor / The presence of other
compounds as competitor
6. Polaritas / Polarity
Apabila berdiameter sama, molekul-molekul polar lebih kuat diadsorpsi
daripada molekul-molekul non polar. Molekul yang lebih polar dapat
menggantikan molekul yang kurang polar yang terlebih dahulu
teradsorpsi.
Polarity In the same diameter, polar molecules are stronger adsorped
than non polar molecules. The more polar molecules can substitute the
less polar molecules that first adsorped.
7. Reaktivitas adsorbat / Adsorbate reactivity
8. Temperatur dan tekanan / Temperature and pressure
9. Waktu kontak antara adsorbat dengan adsorben / Contact time between
adsorbate and adsorbent.
30
Figure 12. Proses Adsorpsi/Adsorption Process
Physical adsorption is caused primarily by the Van der Waals force and
electrostatic force between adsorbate molecules and the atoms that form
the surface of the adsorbent. Van der Waals force is the force of attraction
between polar molecules which are relatively weak, so make them easy to
be released. When the adsorbent is in contact with the fluid with right
composition, it will happen adsorption and after a long time, adsorbent and
fluid will reach equilibrium.
31
1. Adsorpsi Fisika (adsorpsi Van der Waals)
2. Adsorpsi Kimia (chemisorptions)
Adsorption that occurs on the surface of the adsorbent can be:
32
that requires regeneration process because the adsorbed substance
does not dissolve in the adsorbent but only on the surface. The
adsorption is relatively rapid and reversible. Because it can take place
below the adsorbate critical temperature which is relatively low, the
adsorption heat which is released is also low. The adsorbate, which is
bound weakly on the adsorbent surface, can move from one part of the
surface to the other surface.
Proses adsorpsi fisik terjadi tanpa memerlukan energi aktivasi,
Physical adsorption process occurs without activation energy, so that
the process forms multilayer on the surface of adsorbent. Bonds formed
in the physical adsorption can be broke easily by degassing or by
heating at a temperature of 150-200 0 C for 2-3 hours.
Contoh :
Example:
33
diregenerasi. Contoh: ion exchange.

Figure 14. Beds Vertical Adsorber
From Figure 1 above shows that at the bottom there is a fluid that is
used to regenerate the adsorbent. It is intended because for the type
of adsorber is getting down to the bottom, the adsorbent will be
saturated, in which the addition of the reactants for further absorption
will not be perfect. Therefore, to maximize the absorption of
adsorbents, the fluid used to be able to regenerate the adsorbent. It
is called beds because there is a board for laying granular
adsorbent, because the pores of adsorbent is different, it can
happen to good adsorption, then the entered reactants must fill the
pore according to the molecular size of the reactant. Beds granular
adsorbents are located in above and below the adsorber column, the
below is used to remove the adsorbent when the adsorbent is can’t
regenerated anymore.
39
Umumnya operator masuk
untuk memeriksa keadaan adsorber, mengangkat adsorben karena
sudah tidak dapat diregenerasi lagi, dan sebagainya. Untuk beds
adsorben digunakan flat screen support.
It is seen that steam entered on the left column adsorber, through
the screen and absorbent for drying, and then out along with the gas
or vapor that is not adsorbed. At the top of the column there is a
manhole or pit for adsorber operator entrance. Operators generally
go to check the adsorber, move the adsorbent because it can’t be
regenerated again, and so on. Flat screen support is used for
adsorbent beds.
2. Rotary Bed
terdapat screen support adsorbent. Dua hal tersebut akan sangat
41
mempengaruhi proses adsorpsi yang akan terjadi. Rotary bed adsorber
sehingga diperoleh produk berupa cairan.
satu tempat.
From the figure shows that the incoming reactant fluid is air, adsorbent
used is activated carbon. The air spins due to the centrifugal force of
the rotation of the motor. The adsorption product will come out in the
form of gas and vapor and will be condensed in order to obtain a liquid
product. Steam fluid entering the rotation axis rotary bed is used for
regeneration. So it can be said that the adsorbent, adsorbate, and
steam in contact at one place.
3. Fluidized Bed
43
• Counter current movement meningkatkan efektivitas penggunaan

menyeluruh.
▪ Permukaan bersifat heterogenous, afinitas pada tiap tempat terjadi
ikatan adalah sama.
Adsorption Equation Model
1. Model of Langmuir
Model of Langmuir was first developed in 1918 that is for gas absorption
process on solid surfaces.
45
Untuk sistem padat-gas, persamaan Langmuir dapat dituliskan
sebagai :
𝑄0 𝑘𝐶𝑒
𝑞𝑐 =
1+𝑘𝐶𝑒
dimana:
= adsorpsi maksimum
k = ka / kd
Information:
• = maximum adsorption
• k = ka / kd
46
Teori ini berdasarkan pada asumsi bahwa:
Kecepatan adsorpsi =
= konstanta adsorbsi
Kecepatan desorpsi =
= adsorption constants
Desorption rate =
47
At the time of equilibrium, then the rate of adsorption = desorption rate,
so that f becomes:
𝐶𝑎 𝑝∗
𝑓=
𝐶𝑑 + 𝐶𝑎 𝑝∗
𝑚 = 𝐶𝑚 𝑓
𝑘1 𝑝∗
𝑚=
𝑘2 𝑝∗ +1

2. Model Dari Freundlich
2. Model Of Freundlich
1⁄
𝑞𝑐 = 𝑘𝑓 𝐶𝑒 𝑛
atau log 𝑞𝑐 = log 𝑘𝑓 + 1⁄𝑛 log 𝐶𝑒
dimana :
▪ 𝑘𝑓 , n = konstanta
49
Information:
• 𝑘𝑓 , n = constants
1. Kurva isoterm yang cenderung datar artinya isoterm yang
digunakan menyerap pada kapasitas konstan melebihi daerah
kesetimbangan.
2. Kurva isoterm yang curam artinya kapasitas adsorpsi meningkat
seiring dengan meningkatnya konsentrasi kesetimbangan.

The things that can be seen from the isotherm curve are as follows:

- Kondensasi
- Pembakaran
- Solidifikasi

been desorption. Recovery can be done by:
- Condensation
- Burning
- Solidification

55
1. Adsorption is process of molecular absorption (gas or liquid) by the
surface (solid); may occur because of interaction of electrostatic or
Van der Waals force between molecules (physisorption) or by the
chemical interaction between molecules (chemisorptions). Another
definition of adsorption is binding process one/more components in
the mixture gas/liquid by solid on its surface.

Faktor-Faktor yang Mempengaruhi Proses Adsorpsi
Factors Affecting the Adsorption Process
• Karakteristik adsorben
a. Kemurnian adsorben
• Characteristics of the adsorbent
a. Adsorbent purity
63
b. Luas permukaan adsorben
Jumlah molekul adsorbat yang teradsorp meningkat dengan
bertambahnya luas permukaan dan volume pori adsorben.
Semakin luas permukaan adsorben, maka makin banyak zat yang
teradsorpsi sehingga proses adsorpsi dapat semakin effektif. Luas
adsorben.
b. Surface area of the adsorbent
The amount of adsorbed adsorbate molecules increases with
increasing of the surface area and pore volume of the adsorbent.
• Ukuran partikel
Makin kecil ukuran partikel yang digunakan maka semakin besar
kecepatan adsorpsinya.
200 mesh.
• Particle size
The smaller the particle size used, the greater the adsorption rate. The
diameter size in the form of grain is more than 0.1 mm, while the diameter
of the powder is 200 mesh.
• Waktu Kontak
biasanya sekitar 10-15 menit. Waktu kontak yang menghasilkan
kapasitas adsorpsi maksimum terjadi pada waktu kesetimbangan.
64
• Contact time
The longer the contact time the better the process of diffusion and
attachment of adsorbate molecules. Concentration of organic matter will
go down if enough contacts and the contact time is usually about 10-15
minutes. Contact time resulting in maximum adsorption capacity occurs
at equilibrium time.
65
• Jenis adsorbat
• Type of adsorbate
Adsorbate polarizability enhancement will improve the ability of
molecules adsorption that have a high polarizability (polar) (has the ability
to pull other molecules) compared to molecules that can’t form a dipole
(non-polar). The increase of adsorbate molecular weight can increase the
adsorption capacity. Adsorbate with branched chains are usually more
easily absorbed than the straight chain.
• Konsentrasi Adsorbat
• Adsorbate concentration
The greater the concentration of adsorbate in the solution, the more the
amount of substance that collects on the surface of the adsorbent
• Temperatur adsorben
66
adsorben sehingga kemampuan penyerapannya menurun.
• Adsorbent temperature
Heating or activation of the adsorbent will increase absorption capability
of adsorbent to adsorbate because the adsorbent pores are more open.
Too high Heating is causing damage to the adsorbent so that the
absorption capacity decreases.
• Temperatur adsorbat
• Adsorbate temperature
When the gas or adsorbate molecules attached to the adsorbent surface,
it will release energy called exothermic process. Reduced temperatures
will increase the amount of adsorbate adsorbed as well as vice versa.
• pH
pH larutan mempengaruhi kelarutan ion logam, aktivitas gugus fungsi
dijerap, sehingga efisiensi penyerapan turun. Proses penyerapan akan
berjalan baik bila pH larutan tinggi. Derajad keasaman mempengaruhi
• pH
pH of the solution affects the solubility of metal ions, functional groups
activity on biosorbent, and metal ion competition in the adsorption
process. At low pH, the H+ ions will compete with contaminants absorbed,
67
so absorption efficiency decrease. Absorption process will work well at
high pH. The degree of acidity affects adsorption as pH determines the
solution ionization level. Good pH range between 8-9. Organic acids
compounds more easily adsorbed at low pH, otherwise adsorption of
organic bases effective at high pH.
• Kecepatan pengadukan
Kecepatan pengadukan menentukan kecepatan waktu kontak adsorben
dan adsorbat. Bila pengadukan terlalu lambat maka proses adsorpsi
berlangsung lambat pula, tetapi bila pengadukan terlalu cepat
kemungkinan struktur adsorben cepat rusak, sehingga proses adsorpsi
kurang optimal.
• Stirring speed
Stirring speed determines the speed of the contact time of the adsorbent
and adsorbate. When the mixing is too slow then the adsorption process
was slow anyway, but when mixing too quickly the possibility of adsorbent
structure easily damaged, so that the adsorption process is less than
optimal.
