PENGERTIAN ETILEN
 Etilen adalah hidrokarbon dengan rumus C2H4 atau H2C=CH2 merupakan
alkena sederhana (hidrokarbon dengan ikatan rangkap karbon-karbon), dan
hidrokarbon tak jenuh yang paling sederhana setelah asetilena (C 2H2).

Etilen juga merupakan hormon tumbuhan alami yang penting, yang digunakan
dalam pertanian untuk memaksa pematangan yang buah-buahan. 

Adapun penggunaan etilen dalam dunia industri cukup luas antara lain sebagai
bahan baku industri kimia etilen oksida, polietilen, etilen benzene,
vinilklorida, dan etilen glikol.

Nama umum : Etilena (C2H4)

Sinonim: Etena, Ethene

Merupakan cairan dan uap yang secara ekstrim mudah menyala, gas
dibawah tekanan, dapat menyebabkan radang dingin yang parah, kanker,
kerusakan genetik, iritasi kulit, cacat kelahiran, iritasi pada pernafasan.
Tindakan Pertolongan Pertama Bila Terkena Etilena :

Secara umum : Jauhkan dari panas, kilatan cahaya dan nyala api.
Untuk perlindungan, jaga jangan terjadi kebocoran maupun kebakaran.
Bila terjadi maka untuk gunakan peralatan pernafasan dan pakaian
pengaman.

Bila terhirup : Longgarkan pakaian (ikat pinggang) yang ada dan bantu
dengan peralatan pernafasan dengan tabung oksigen, segera meminta
pertolongan tenaga medis.
Bila terkena kulit : Segera basuh dengan sabun dan air, jangan
menggunakan air panas, jangan menggosok kulit yang terkena.

Bila terkena mata : Segera basuh atau aliri mata dengan air dingin
selama kurang lebih 15 menit, jangan menggunakan air panas, segera
hubungi tenaga medis bila terjadi gejala yang lebih buruk.
PROSES PEMBUATAN
ETILEN
 1. DEHIDRASI ETANOL
C2H5OH → C2H4 + H2O

Reaksi dehidrasi etanol berlangsung pada reaksi yang endotermik. Reaksi ini menggunakan
reaktor fixed bed multitubular dengan menggunakan acidic catalyst, seperti H2SO4.

Pada umumnya, etanol dipanaskan bersama dengan asam sulfat pekat pada suhu lebih dari
170°C. Gas-gas yang dihasilkan dilewatkan ke dalam larutan natrium hidroksida untuk
menghilangkan CO2 dan SO2 yang dihasilkan dari reaksi-reaksi sampingan.

Proses dehidrasi etanol juga dapat terjadi dengan bantuan katalisator alumina aktif dan asam
fosfat. Penggunaan katalis ini menyebabkan pembentukan eter terjadi pada suhu 230 oC,
sedangkan pada suhu 300-400oC diperoleh etilen dengan kandungan eter minimum.

Hasil etilen dapat mencapai 94-99% dari nilai teoritis.

 2. PIROLISIS HIDROKARBON (THERMAL
CRACKING)
C2H6 → C2H4 + H2

Bahan baku di-preheating dan dilarutkan dengan steam kemudian direngkah.

Campuran antara etana dan steam masuk ke dalam reaktor tubular pada suhu 750-875°C.
Produk keluaran reaktor memiliki temperatur tinggi dan dimanfaatkan untuk pembuatan
steam.
Pirolisis biasanya digunakan untuk memproduksi senyawa alkena seperti senyawa olefin
berupa etilen atau propilen

Penambahan steam berfungsi untuk mengurangi tekanan parsial hidrokarbon dan jumlah
karbon yang terdeposit dalam dinding tube.
 3. PROSES PERENGKAHAN DENGAN PANAS
(THERMALCRACKING)
4C2H6 → 2CH4  +  C2H4 + C4H10 + H2

Reaksi dilakukan dalam reaktor pipa atau langsung di dalam suatu furnace.
Reaksi perengkahan terjadi pada suhu di atas 637 0C tanpa katalis dan tekanan
atmosferis. Setelah keluar dari reaktor, produk didinginkan secara mendadak dan
kemudian dimurnikan untuk mendapatkan produk dengan kemurnian yang diinginkan.
Suhu produk keluar sekitar 1800 0F (850 0C) didinginkan mendadak pada alat penukar
panas hingga suhu di bawah suhu 640 0C.

Ekspor Etilen Indonesia dilakukan oleh dua perusahaan yaitu PT Chandra Asri
Petrochemicals dan PT Lotte Chemical Titan dengan nilai mencapai 4,36 miliar dolar dan
negara tujuan adalah Cina.
 PRODUKSI ETILEN DI INDONESIA
Produksi etilen di Indonesia masih dalam jumlah yang lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan
kebutuhan yang perlu dipenuhi. Produksi etilen di Indonesia hanya berasal dari dua
perusahaan yaitu PT Cahndra Asri Petrochemical dan PT Lotte Chemical Titan.
Perbandingan kebutuhan, produksi dan impor dari etilen pada rentang 2010-2013 disajikan
dalam diagram berikut:
