The Prophet Nuh

Allah SWT sent prophet Nuh AS to earth 1000 year after sending
prophet Adam AS. The population of Earth had increased by many folds by
now. And by this time, the evil had played his dirty tricks with mankind. And
people had started worshipping idols.
It was not going to be an easy job for the prophet. “Fear Allah, and do
what Allah says.” Shouted the prophet to everyone. But the people did not
want to listen. They shook their heads, and continued worshiping the idols.
The prophet was an excellent speaker and he was very patient too. “Don’t
you understand that it was Allah who created this world?” Shouted the
prophet, “It was Allah who created the sun, the moon and the stars you see
in the sky and everything you see around. He did all this for you, and you
alone. Then why are you not showing him any respect? Why are you
worshipping these idols?.” But the people turned their backs on him saying,
“Ha… who are you to advice us? You are just another man, and we think that
you are lying. Go away, and leave us alone.” But there were good muslims on
Earth too! Most of them were weak and poor. They listened to the words of
the prophet. On many occasions, he was stoned by the idols worshippers
while preaching to the crowd. He was beaten with sticks.

SMK Kelas X TKJ 1,2, & 3- KD 3.8. – Narrative Text Legend (Reading Skill) - Bahan Ajar 3
One night, when the prophet was offering his prayers, Allah spoke to
him, “Don’t be sad, Nuh! You have done what you were asked to. I’m going to
punish all the people on the Earth for their wrongdoings.” As the first step,
God asked the prophet to plant many trees. The prophet Nuh and his
followers did this more than one hundred years. After that, Allah spoke to the
prophet again! This time He asked the prophet to start building a ship! The
prophet then started making the ship with the help of his followers.
One day, water suddenly coming out of the stove of kitchen. This was
the sign Nuh AS was waiting for from the God. When he went out from the
house, he saw that it had started raining too. Without wasting anytime, he
ran out and called all followers who had helped him to build the ship. The
prophet asked his wives and son to board the ship quickly. Everyone obeyed
him except for one his wife and her son who was not his followers.
The water levels had gone up by now. A terrible flood broke out, and
the water levels began to rise rapidly. These enormous waves killed all other
disbelievers as well. The Earth was completely dilled with water. Like that,
Allah SWT solved many problems that the prophet had to face. They had
sailed about one hundred and fifty days by now.
The prophet and his family were really happy as they know that they
were saved. The ship finally reached the top of the Joodi mountain. The
prophet released all the animals, birds, and insects first into the land. They
went out and populated back again.

a. Pengertian teks naratif
Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain or amuse the readers or
listeners. It also can be based from real story but with additional seasoning to the story
to make it more interesting.
(Source: Otong Setiawan Dj., 2013)
b. Jenis-jenis teks naratif
Common forms of narrative text which are studied in high school are:
(1) Legend
A legend is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and
listeners to take place within human history. Typically, a legend is a short,
traditional and historicized narrative performed in a conversational mode. Some
define legend as folktale.
Example:
• Sangkuriang
• Malin Kundang
• The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu
(2) Fable
Fable is a short allegorical narrative making a moral point, traditionally by means
of animal characters who speak and act like human beings.
Example:
• Mousedeer and crocodile
• A fox and a cat
• The story of monkey and crocodile
(3) Fairy tale
Fairy tale is an English language term for a type of short narrative corresponding
to the French phrase “conte de fee”. A fairy tale typically features such folkloric
characters as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants or gnomes, and usually
magic or enchantments.
Example:
• Cinderella
• Snow White
• Beauty and the Beast
(Source: Rahmat Wijaya, 2011)
c. Fungsi sosial teks naratif
The purpose of narrative text is to entertain or amuse the readers or listeners.
(Source: Otong Setiawan Dj., 2013)
d. Struktur teks naratif
Narrative text is commonly constituted by a number of events in which it is
found that something goes wrong. The wrong side of the event leads to a stage, which
is one with great suspense called a crisis or climax in the story. The story then stages a
solution to the problem in the climax. A narrative ends with a solution, either with a
happy or sad ending.
The generic structure of narrative is as follows.

SMK Kelas X TKJ 1,2, & 3- KD 3.8. – Narrative Text Legend (Reading Skill) - Bahan Ajar 7
(1) Orientation
The stage of orientation tells ‘who is who and where’. This is to say that the stage
specifies who takes part in the story. The participants may be human or non-
human beings, such as animals and things. The stage also indicates the location,
namely the place where the story takes place and the time when the story happens.
In brief, orientation is an opening paragraph where the characters of the story are
introduced.
(2) Complication/crisis
The stage of complication treats the crisis or climax in the story. This is the part of
the story where something goes wrong and becomes a serious problem. The crisis
is of great interest and suspense. This stage is where the problems in the story
developed.
(3) Resolution
The resolution stage explains efforts taken to solve the problem.
(4) Reorientation
This stage is optional. It is the conclusion of the story.
(5) Coda
Coda is also optional in narrative text. The stage of coda closes the story by
additional remarks. It is where the lesson from the story is stated.

Seruni, my husband! Let’s follow him!” her mother said. Her father called some

When they arrived on the hole, her father shouted her name and intended

The villagers flamed up torch to illuminate the hole. But the floor was too deep
and dark. They tried to pull down a rope in to the hole by hoping that Seruni
could reach in and climb up to the surface, but their effort was nothing.
Suddenly, the ground shook very strong as though as an earthquake. The
hole moved closer and slowly enclosed. Seruni who was still inside could not go

The Legend of King Arthur

In 5th century, Britain was ruled by the High-King named Uther, who
fell in love Lady Igraine. Unfortunately, Lady Igraine was already married
to Gorlois, the Duke of Tintagel. King Uther decided to marry Lady Igraine,
so he took his army, fought with Gorlois and killed him. He married his love
and they had a son named Arthur.
Because this was a very dangerous time and also the time of many
attacks by Saxons, King Arthur gave his son to his wizard Merlin, to keep
him safe. Merlin sent Arthur away to be raised in the countryside with his
foster brother Kay. He never knew who his parents were.
When King Uther died, no one knew he had a son. Many people
argued who will be the next king. Suddenly, a mysterious stone appeared in
the yard of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. It was a message on it: whoever
will pull the sword out, will be the rightful king of Britain.
Years later, when Arthur was 15 years old, his foster brother Kay,
had his first knight’s tournament. The family went to London. Arthur forgot
to take the Kay’s sword, so went to look for one. He found a sword in the
stone and took it out easily. When people noticed the sword, everyone
wanted to know who pulled the sword out. At first no one believed Arthur
had done it. But later Arthur was crowned to be the King, even if eleven local
kings would not agree and started a rebellion against Arthur.
