Learning Activity
LET’S STarT
Do you have a dream? Do you imagine something? How do you express it in English? When
we express a dream or imagination, we express unreal situation in the present. Now, have you ever
felt regret? How do you express your regret in English? When we express situation that we regretted,
we express unreal situation in the past.
Talking about unreal situations in the present and in the past, we use conditional
sentences. We must have learnt about conditional sentences. There are some types of conditional
sentence such as zero conditionals, first conditionals, second conditionals, and third conditionals.
In this chapter, we are going to discuss more about unreal conditions in the present and in the past
with second conditionals and third conditionals.
The underlined expressions in the dialogue about are called conditional sentences. From the
conditional sentences, we can learn the facts below!
1. Dani doesn’t do his homework.
2. Dani didn’t listen to Mrs. Lila’s explanation, so he couldn’t finish his homework.
3. Dani will join Mila and his friends when he has time.
In conclusion, the conditional sentences show the situation and then consequences. Conditional
sentences are used to speculate about what could happen, what might have happen, and what we wish
would happen. They are also known as conditional clauses of if-clauses.
Conditional sentences function to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take
place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled.
4|P age
There are four types of conditional sentences. Look at the following table!
Conditional Sentences
Type If Clause Main Clause Usage
LET’S KNOW
Pay attention to these sentences. Does each sentence tell about a condition in the future?
Do you know?
Finally, the golden boy of English football has retired from playing. But if we use some third
conditional sentences, we can imagine a different past and how his life may have turned out in another
way, if he had not done specific things at certain moments.
David Beckham has retired from 'the beautiful game' and no matter what you think about his playing
and his success as a advertising megastar, you surely can't deny that he has had an amazing and
unprecedented footballing career. As he said himself in a statement.......
“If you had told me as a young boy that I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood
club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and
lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy”.
Clearly, his best days are behind him, but somehow he has still managed to bow out at the top, whilst
still playing at the highest level. When he was a teenager, he broke through on to the world stage when
he scored an incredible goal from the halfway line. If he hadn't scored that goal, would he have
become a legend?
Since, then, you could say that he hasn't put a foot wrong. However, there were some ups as
well as downs, which have made it a bit of a roller coaster career in which he has gone from being the
poster boy for English football all the way down to the bottom, too.
7|P age
If he hadn't been sent off in the World Cup against Argentina, then England might have won the match
and gone on to be the world champions. If he hadn't worked hard, then maybe he wouldn't have
become England captain or the fantastic person that he is now.
If he hadn't acknowledged that he was too old to play football at 38, then he would have
continued playing and perhaps he would have become an embarrassment and tarnished his reputation.
What do you think about this different idea about his past?
If he had married a different Spice Girl like Geri Haliwell, he wouldn't have modeled in a million
advertisements. And just one last thing.... If Posh Spice, hadn't married David Beckham; she would
have disappeared by now, wouldn't she?
When we talk about unreal condition in the present, and in the past, we may use conditionals which use
past and perfect tense. Here are the explanations.
We use conditional sentence type 2 or second conditional. The main meaning of the second conditional
is to imagine something that is not true or real at the moment. We often use it to talk about the opposite
of what is true or real. It never talks about a past action or event. We use simple past tense (S+V2) in
the-if clause.

b. Form
Note: Sometimes, would is replaced by another modal verb, for example, could, and might.
8|P age
When we are talking about unreal condition in the past, we use conditional sentence type 3 or third
conditional. When we talk about things that did not happen in the past, we use the third conditional
sentence. The past perfect is used in the if-clause and the modal would with a perfect infinitive is used
in the main clause.

If your answer is “no” for one of the above questions, study again the concepts in “Pathway” book
and learn again the learning with your teacher/ partner guide.
Then, if your answers are “yes” for all the questions, you may ask formative test for this
material.
