c. Tujuan Pembelajaran
Melalui kegiatan pembelajaran dengan scientific approach dan dengan model Discovery learning
dan 4C (creative, collaborative, communication, critical thinking) siswa dapat membedakan dan
menganalisis fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan beberapa teks pembahasan ilmiah
(discussion) dengan cermat.

a. Siswa mengamati power point yang diberikan dan membuat kesimpulannya.
b. Siswa membaca konsep materi yang diberikan dan memahaminya.

Text 1
Abortion: A Controversial Issue
For years, abortion has been an extremely controversial subject. One important aspect of the
controversy is whether a woman should be permitted by law to have an abortion and, if so, under
what circumstances. Another is whether, and to what extent laws should protect the unborn. People
who wish to legally limit or forbid abortions describe themselves as pro-life. Those who believe that a
woman should have the right to have an abortion may refer to themselves as pro-choice.
Arguments against abortion are based on the belief that an abortion is the unjustified killing of
an unborn child. Most people who oppose abortion believe that human life begins when a sperm
fertilizes an egg. Another argument against abortion is that laws allowing it on demand will increase
irresponsible pregnancies and lead to disrespect for human life. The Roman Catholic Church is a chief
opponent of abortion. Conservative branches of other religions also oppose abortion.
Many people approve of abortion under certain circumstance. Some approve of abortion if a
woman’s life or health is endangered by her pregnancy. Others recommend abortion when there is
danger that the child will be born with a serious mental or physical defect. They also approve of
abortion when pregnancy has resulted from rape or incest.
Many people who think that a woman should have the right to choose to have an abortion
distinguish between human life and personhood. They argue that personhood implies both the
capacity for self-conscious thought and acceptance as a member of a social community. These
people believe a fetus is not a person and is thus not entitled to rights normally given to a person.
Such pro-choice supporters agree with the view that birth represents the beginning of personhood.
Another pro-choice argument is that legalizing abortions has eliminated many illegal abortions
performed by unskilled practitioners under unsanitary conditions. These abortions often cause
deaths and permanent reproductive injuries. Abortion on demand also prevents many unwanted
births and may thus be a factor in lowering infant and child abuse, neglect, and death rates. Also
some argue that women should not have to bear unwanted children in a world with a growing
population and diminishing natural resources.
As a result of this controversy, abortion laws vary from country to country. In Russia, where
abortion has been legal since 1920, it is allowed up to about the fourth month of pregnancy, purely
by request, and is commonly used as a method of birth control. In some countries, such as the
Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, abortion is only allowed when pregnancy threatens the
mother’s life. South Africa, New Zealand, and Hong Kong allow abortion when the fetus is severely
damaged. In the Republic of Ireland, the operation may only be performed when either the mother’s
or baby’s life is in danger.

The Internet has been being revolutionized nowadays. This appears in almost all sides of daily life,
whether in business, communication, etc. The newest trend that will occur recently is internet 5G.
Internet 5G is the upgraded version of internet 4G. The power of this version is faster and better than
the predecessor. Internet 5G can make it easier for people to find out any information from any
sources.  
However, would it be good forever? We will see the benefits as well as the drawbacks of the
internet 5G.It provides limitless access to any kinds of information. 
People can enjoy everything easily with the amazing internet speed.  Besides, everybody can learn
and search any information in different subjects through millions of websites.
Moreover,  there is no need for people to get bored while waiting for files on the internet. It is
because internet 5G provides the best system to access the internet.
Internet 5G also provides a better and bigger prospect to grow business or marketing. We will be
able to gain wider markets and reach more potential customers through internet 5G.
In spite of devouring good sides, internet 5G also has weaknesses. Internet 5G is more possible to
get people closer to any Illegal activities. It is because everyone can access the internet easily with no
trouble.
More than that, people will tend to be lazier because internet 5G has made everything easier.
People can also be addicted to the internet since they can access what they like through the internet,
no matter if it is good or bad.  
In conclusion, internet 5G may be good because it provides better access to any information. Yet, it
also contributes negative impacts for everyone. So, use it wisely to help us live better.

For whatever reasons, people are now starting to switch conventional learning to distance learning.
But, people still debate if distance learning contributes more benefits or drawbacks.
The proponents of distance learning  say it is better since it requires no commuting. Then, it saves
time and money for students. Also, distance learning is more convenient for them.
Distance learning provides more availability. Nobody can reject it. With the presence of an online
class method, students can still attend the class whatever their condition.
Despite the advantages, the opponents still find problems with distance learning. They say that
distance learning is more costly. It also requires complex technology.
Another drawback of online class is there is no immediate feedback. Not likely the traditional
classroom, students should wait for comments or feedback. It is because the teacher has to review
and send responses.
Students will learn and work alone most of the time. Students can feel isolated and get less physical
and social interaction.
Distance learning may be good, but it does not mean this method has nothing to deny. Regarding
the advantages and disadvantages, it’s good to see individuals’ learning style before deciding to use
online or traditional learning.

A DISCUSSION TEXT: OVERVIEW


A discussion is a piece of writing that explores the pros and cons or the advantages and disadvantages
of an issue to allow the readers top reach a logical conclusion. A balanced view of the writer is reflected
throughout the writing. The communicative purpose of the text is to present arguments/ opinions/
information from different viewpoints. The examples of the text are newspaper editorials, thesis, journals,
debates.
The generic structures are:
 Issue introduces the topic and previews the arguments that follow.
 Arguments – for are positive arguments in support of the issue. Here the writer discusses each point,
and then gives detailed information or evidence to support it.
 Arguments – against are negative arguments in disagreement with the issue. Here the writer discusses
each point, and then gives detailed information or evidence to support it.
 Conclusion or recommendation is a brief summary of the issue discussed.

The language features are:


 General nouns, e.g. examination, abortion, gene splicing, etc.
 Relating verbs, e.g. is, are, etc.
 Thinking verbs, e.g. think, feel, believe, hope, etc.
 Additive connective, e.g. furthermore, besides, etc.
 Contrastive connective, e.g. although, nevertheless, etc.
 Causal connectives, e.g. because, since.
 Modals, e.g. must, should, etc.
 Adverbs of manner, e.g. hopefully, likely, etc.
