Definisi
Dewasa pertengahan merupakan usia sekitar 35-40 tahun & berakhir sekitar 60-65
tahun (Schaie & Willis, 1996 dlm Psikologi Perkembangan). Dewasa Pertengahan adalah
masa menyesuaikan diri & kesedaran bahawa ia bukan lagi muda & masa depannya tidak
lagi dipenuhi dengan kemungkinan-kemungkinan yg tidak terhadapi, hasilnya membawa
satu masa krisis, (Craig, 1976). Usia dewasa tengah (Middle adulthood) disebut sebagai
periode perkembangan yang dimulai kira-kira 35-45 tahun hingga memasuki usia 60an
tahun. (Santrock, 1995)

Biasanya pasangan suami istri dalam usia pertengahan merupakan sebuah keluarga inti meskipun
masih berinteraksi dengan orangtua mereka yang lanjut usia dan anggota keluarga lain dari keluarga
asal mereka dan juga anggota keluarga dari hasil perkawinan keturunannya.Pasangan Postparental
(pasangan yang anak-anaknya telah meninggalkan rumah) biasanya tidak terisolasi lagi saat ini,
semakin banyak pasangan usia pertengahan hidup hingga menghabiskan seluruh masa hidupnya dan
menghabiskan sebagian masa hidupnya dalam fase postparental, dengan hubungan ikatan keluarga
hingga empat generasi, yang merupakan hal yang biasa(Troll, 1971, dalam Friedman, 1988, hal 130).
Karakteristik Dewasa usia pertengahan

Tahun pertengahan meliputi perubahan-perubahan pada penyesuaian perkawinan

(seringkali lebih baik), pada distribusi kekuasaan antara suami dan istri (lebih merata),
dan pada peran (diferensi peran perkawinan meningkat) (Leslie dan Korman, 1989, dalam
Friedman 1988, hal 130).
Pada tahun-tahun ini umumnya sulit dan berat, karena masalah-masalah penuaan,
hilangnya anak, dan adanya suatu perasaan dalam diri mereka bahwa mereka gagal
menjadi membesarkan anak dan usaha kerja. Selanjutnya, tidak jelas apa yang terjadi
dengan kepuasan perkawinan dan keluarga melewati siklus-siklus kehidupan berkeluarga.
Beberapa studi tentang kepuasan perkawinan memperlihatkan bahwa kepuasan
perkawinan menurun tajam setelah perkawinan berlangsung dan terus menurun hingga
tahun pertengahan (Leslie dan Korman, 1989, dalam Friedman 1988, hal 130).
Masalah dewasa usia pertengahan
Menurut fridman (1998, hal 132) pada fase ini, masalah kesehatan yang dapat
terjadi pada keluarga dewasa pertengahan yaitu:

a. Kebutuhan promosi kesehatan, istirahat yang tidak cukup, kegiatan waktu

luang dan tidur yang kurang, nutrisi yang tidak baik, program olahraga yang
tidak teratur, pengurangan berat badan hingga berat badan yang optimum,
berhenti merokok, berhenti atau mengurangi penggunaan alkohol, pemeriksaan
skrining kesehatan preventif.
b. Masalah-masalah hubungan perkawinan.
c. Komunikasi dan hubungan dengan anak-anak, ipar, dan cucu, dan orang tua
yang berusian lanjut.
d. Masalah yang berhubungan dengan perawatan membantu perawatan orang
tua yang lanjut usia atau tidak mampu merawat diri.
