CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1. 1 Background Of The Paper

Interaction in the language learning process is very important. Interactions that occur in
the classroom will help students develop their language learning. Apart from that, of course it
will also grow their social skills. Maximizing classroom interaction in language learning is an
important part of the teacher's role as a facilitator. It's not easy if you're not used to it.
Interactions between students or other class members won't just happen. However, a teacher
must consider the lesson plan carefully before teaching and specifically include this
interaction aspect in the teaching plan.

The following are several approaches that can be used by teachers to increase student or
learner interaction in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. The reality in the
classroom for language learning is actually very worrying. The quality and quantity of
interaction in learning between all components (students and students, students and teachers)
is still very lacking. Not yet as expected by most teachers. Some students sometimes seem
shy, or underestimate the interactions that teachers ask them to apply their language skills.
For example, what is often seen in foreign language lessons such as English, when they are
asked to interact (ask questions and answers) to each other or their friends about a topic or
thing, it is clear that they are having difficulty.

DISCUSSION

2.1 Extra Phrases For Ball Games

A. The Meaning Of The Phrases

A phrase is two or more words that do not contain a main verb to create meaning, but are
not a complete sentence. Phrases can be very short or quite long (Mohadib. et al 2017).
Phrases do not have a general formula so they do not have limitations that determine how
short or long the group of words is. In other words, we can find phrases that consist of two
words, and we can also find phrases that consist of more than four words. The function of a
phrase in a sentence is to provide additional information so as to make the sentence more
meaningful, clearer and more complex. (Quoted from the English Village article) Here are
some examples of phrases in (Mohadib, kk 2017):

a. Running to class, Ambrose tripped on the stairs and dropped his backpack. Running to
class a phrase

b. After lunch, Doni went to computer class. After lunch, = a phrase

B. Phrases Function

Linguistically, a phrase in English is defined as a form of combination of several words

consisting of at least 2 or more words where the words do not contain a subject or predicate.
Phrases in an English sentence have quite an important function. The function of a phrase is
to complete the information contained in an English sentence. (Quoted from the English
Village article). The function of a phrase depends on its construction. Based on their function
and idea, phrases are divided into various types: nouns, verbs, adjective phrases, adverbial
phrases, and prepositional phrases. (Mohadib, et al 2017), The expressions that will be
explained are: 8 Extra Phrases for Ball Games (Other phrases for ball games) in (Farida,
2016) can be seen in the following table.

According to Case (2019)
Using ball games to teach English Ball games are a great way to practice all types of
language with young learners, especially children who struggle with more traditional
classroom activities. Many teachers start most classes with games such as one person
throwing and catching as much as they can while saying the right thing, two or more people
working together to do the same thing, a more competitive version where they try to get their
classmates to saying the wrong thing or dropping the ball, or any of the many variations
described. Case (2019) further stated that perhaps many teachers see potential problems with
bringing a ball into their classrooms, including:

a. The ball hits objects in the classroom (and even breaks them) Students get overly excited

b. The ball distracts students' attention from the language

c. Students who can't catch (either) become frustrated or hold back the game

d. Students fight over who should have the ball next, who gets points.

e. waste of time, like a student throwing the ball far away from the next person

f. Students do nothing while waiting (perhaps a long time) for the ball.

g. Students don't throw the ball to them, throw the ball too often or too hard, throw the ball to
a place that is difficult to catch.
h. Students get an uneven amount of speaking time (because of how often they throw the ball,
how long they can spend with the ball depends on how successful they are, etc)
i. Students get bored with using the same ball.

2.3 Asking Children To Guess or Remember
A.understanding

The things that teachers usually do in the teaching and learning process in the classroom are
in the form of asking students to guess or remember something either related to learning or
the material being explained or other things related to the teaching and learning process
carried out within the scope of the school. This right is exercised so that students can
remember or retain at least memories or things that have been explained or done previously.

sentence. Simply put, a phrase is a group of words that functions as a subject, as a predicate,
or as an object in a sentence. Phrases do not have a general formula so they do not have
limitations that determine how short or long a group of words is. The function of a phrase in a
sentence is to provide additional information so as to make the sentence more meaningful,
clearer and more complex.
