You will be given 10 days to accomplish this task. You will design a course with the final products are: (1) a needs
assessment activity (2) a syllabus (3) a lesson plan of your chosen chapter/unit (for a 40-minute lesson) and (4) a
maximum of 1000-word essay explaining the rationale behind your design process.
You may follow the following steps or you can start from any stage you prefer as the process of a course design is
non-linier/cyclical.
Step 1. Create a context for your chosen course. Select one of the following courses:
Be sure to choose a course that you are familiar with and had an experience learning and teaching in order to do
better in this task. The context needs to at least provide the information as the following:
After filling out the above information, explain how the entire information help you design your syllabus and lesson
plan for the chosen course.
Step 2. Create a needs assessment activity to gather more information about your students’ needs intended
on the first day of the course commencement (initial needs assessment). Assuming that the information about
the context you provided above is not adequate to inform the decision on organising the course. You may choose
one activity such as a questionnaire, interview, chart/grid, writing activity, group discussion or ranking activity.
Below your needs assessment activity, explain how this activity could help your gather additional information in order
to help you decide what materials/units/topics and suggested textbooks to use for the chosen course to fulfil the
students’ needs.
Step 3. Design the syllabus. Decide whether to use topical, genre-based, integrated skills, notional, functional or
situational syllabus type. Explain why and how you chose and sequenced those units.
Step 5. Pick one unit and develop the lesson plan for a 40-minute study length. Be sure to use the
textbook/learning resources you suggested in your syllabus. Explain how the learning objectives can be achieved
through your lesson planning (the methods and activities chosen).
Step 7. All the explanations that informed your decision on designing the syllabus and lesson plan above
should be written in paragraphs format and write it in a word.doc. All the rationales should be supported by
credible sources, provide in-text citations and a reference list.
